You have to work on your shading. I'm not talking about Gradients or Filters here, mind you. I mean actually taking the layer and manually shade the hell out of it. If it serves as any advice, take a separate layer (on Multiply), use the Polygonal Lasso tool to rope in the areas you want colour in, and start shading it. If you want richer colours, use about five different shades.

As is, your work (especially in the last one) is rather untidy. White specks all over the outlines are a definite no-no. Also, wean yourself off of filters and gradients. Those are bonuses, not your tools of the trade.

If you want to make some real progress, LEARN THESE WELL.

- Blur Tool
- Smudge Tool
- Polygonal Lasso Tool
- The Hardness/Thickness settings on your Brush Tool

Hate to sound harsh, but filters and gradients are NOT impressive. It's a cheap shortcut.
You want real results, follow my advice. You won't be sorry.

yes sensei. Learn I will

EDIT.....that polygon thing is....a bit weird for me. how should I put the smudge tool to use?

I did this this morning...took me much longer an much much more effort. No filters ^.^

That looks a lot better. The whites and greys could use more definition, but, it's a start, so I won't knack you too much for that.

Here's an example of putting that extra 'oomph' to whites, using light blues and greys. Click on the preview for a closer look:

Beware of using the Burn Tool, though. If anything, use it to slightly enhance shadows, rather than using it to make shadows wholesale. Depending on the settings, it can produce an 'off' colour when compared to the original tone. Don't be afraid of taking it slow, I guarantee you, it'll be way worth it when you're done. Also, get acquainted with Dodge Tool for light areas, but use it gingerly.

I've been doing pretty all right fending with the Lasso Tool so far, but, then again, I've heard a lot of good things about the Pen Tool. You're going to have to show me how it works, though, because damn, is it a pain in the rear end to figure out.

Better yet, here are a couple of sites that can really kick things up a notch:

http://www.dafont.com <==Good place to get fonts FER FREE!
http://www.good-tutorials.com <== Virtually any tutorial in Photoshop you can think of.

There are also several brush sets that can help you along on DeviantArt, just type in 'Brushes' in the search bar and some should pop up. Search 'tutorials' as rb suggested, as well.
