(I don't know why i didn't post this earlier here on GATT....but I desperately need help now :( )
Hi everyone,
I have a notebook purchased in Canada...
HP Pavilion DV6040ca...
About a month ago my HP Pavilion DV6000 notebook basically stopped working...
What I mean by this is that, I used it during the day...Turned it off...
When I turn it back on, I get a beep code...
1 Long Beep, Followed by 2 Short Beeps...
This I've researched is a Video Adapter Problem...
I called in HP, support... and guess what, my warranty had expired 3 days earlier...
I went through some troubleshoting steps with them..
They said to reseat the memory, hard drive...
Did them both... No success....
So I left the system alone for a few weeks...
One week ago, I just decided to turn it on...I did and the system booted up!!!
Got into WIndows, everything is working... Memory in tact... Hard drive files right where I left them....
I restarted it to see if it will work... There it goes again...Beep code...
Now what I need help with is if the problem is indeed my Video Adpater, which is an Nvidia Geforce Go 7200...
Can this be replaced without going through HP?
Another problem with my notebook was that the wireless LAN card (internal) went bad...
Can that be replaced as well?
And any other local suggestions, anyone know if someone can service it locally?
Thanks guys :)
-
Unfortunately, this problem means that you will have to dismantle the laptop
to get to the video-card, and 'reseat' that.
-
dude...u serious???
-
I didnt even know those notebook cards could be removed!!. If it can, do it, clean the contacts and replace. The wireless network adaper on the other hand can be replaced in a matter of 18.3 seconds
-
dude...u serious???
Yes, he is, and that is assuming the video card is 'reseatable'...
hmmm a lil googling will hopefully find you the disassembly manual... have fun

LOL at exact time calculated.... looks like a certain man REAL change mini pci WLAN cards...
-
ok where can i get a mini wireless pci lan card?
and well...... fingers crossed.... the video card it removable.... :(
But if it is removable...and i replace it and still doesn't work... Is a replacement... or even diff. video card easy to get ?
-
frig..never mind...the card is indeed integrated.....
So what do i do now :(
I was thinking though...since the card is considered integrated...it uses RAM right?
So on startup you think it tries to use the RAM?
and how do i find out if the ram not working?
I tried swapping the sticks..same problem...
I saving mailing to away as last resort....
-
ok where can i get a mini wireless pci lan card?
ebay, amazon or newegg
ebay is your best bet to get the matching card..
i know when i tried to switch from a broadcom card to a intel, my compaq kicked a fuss and didnt boot..
you could download and run memtest86, to test ur mem
-
well there's nothing on screen at all...
so memtest rendered useless...
-
Oh sh!t look like I have to monitor this problem, I on a DV6000 as well! How long have you had it, and in that space of time, anything noteworthy happened(drops, crashes, general vista crap etc.)?
-
well there's nothing on screen at all...

my bad.. lol
i thought u were gettin sporadic blanks, not a full failure..
well, there's the ole 'trial an error', where u locate someone who has the same type of ram, and pop it in and see if sparks fly ( well. not literally)
ddr2 pc2-5300, in your case
-
here is the page for your disassembly manual:

-
dude...u serious???
Oh yes...very. I had to dismantle the entire LCD portion of my Dell to replace a broken bezel.
You need to be very patient, and EXTREMELY careful. There's lots of really delicate ribbon cables
all over the place.
VERY IMPORTANT!!!: MAKE SURE you have the right size screwdrivers for this job. You do NOT want to damage the screws
themselves, or the threading where they have to go back. I don't really like dealing with laptops because its so very easy
to break something when taking it apart. Just take your time and you should be OK.
-
I opened it up..and saw enough to know it was integrated...
Thanks for the manual link...but I already had it...and well the manual's troubleshooting steps state that the Mobo needs to be replaced...
Again..anyone know someone that can service this locally...Or should I send this thing to be serviced in Canada?
*shudders at thoughs of price for repair...*
(This notebook was so damn expensive already........sigh.....)
Oh sh!t look like I have to monitor this problem, I on a DV6000 as well! How long have you had it, and in that space of time, anything noteworthy happened(drops, crashes, general vista crap etc.)?
Disheartens you doesn't it?
I took care of my system like if it was my child...
No drops... System never crashed....
Running XP btw...
I did restore the system twice to factory using HP recovery for general maintenance and speeding up of XP...
What did happen though was that the Wireless Card just stopped working....3 months before this current problem..
I had to run a ethernet cable to my system for those months...
>>>
I tell ya man...I was using it all day... Ready to sleep..I turn it off...
but wait! I forget to load a new song on my iPod... So press the power button on the system right where i left it (2mins if that much from shutting down)...
>>> BEEP Code...
This is fricking sad man :(
-
Dammmn. Currently, as I usin this one, i hardly ever shut down, its usually on all day and i have it set to never go into sleep. Its connected using ethernet cable cuz im too lazy to get the wireless setup. damn.
-
My advice is to get the EXACT motherboard model and order it. As its a bonafide computer part, you may not have to pay
any VAT and duty if you import it. Since you know how the laptop comes apart, it should be easy to replace the motherboard right?
-
lol...well the manual has a step by step breakdown of parts.....
Lets just say removing the board is the last step....
i.e.... 100 pages of stuff...
Then gotta reverse that... freaky stuff!!!
*sigh*
I feeling to send this to HP and let them deal with it themselves...
I mean o lawd man... 3 days after warranty expire....
:shakehead:
-
3 days after warranty expire....
:shakehead:
yea boy, daz grounds to NOT buy HP again... i've had 2 HP's, and the most recent laptop buy was a toshiba, lol
-
Hey what's the latest with this? Mine seems to be slowing down, but dais probably cuz it on almost 24/7...Vista does do some weird ish when it ready...JUST like that one day my icon for the videos folder disappear, among some other minor crap. Its still so prrreetttyy tho
-
Well I sent it into repair by a local company > Wizz Computers..
THey chek it out...Mobo gone as mentioned earlier...
So they trying to source the board now...
Will update this thread if it gets sorted out...
(i just worried about price for that board with the gpu now :()
-
Update....they couldn't source the motheboard...
Well they did find it...but...the supplier kept cancelling the order for some reason...
ANyhowz..
Fellaz urgent help REQUIRED!
Please...
I turned on the laptop and it boot up...I in windows right now..
THis had only happened one other time in the past 3 months...
I searched and apparently there is a bios update that may fix it..
Problem is..I can;t download from ftp from some reason...
So can one of ya'll please download this bios update for me...
And upload to rapidshare.com or other file host...
Please... I don't want to turn off the notebook...
This is the bios update:

I posted up the same thing on the playstation forums...
Lots o people there...
And somehow uploaded for me...lol
Thanks lots friendly sniper though...
I ran the flash update for the bios...
And apparently its working!!!
Restarted the pc 4 times...worked everytime..
Wireless problem also solved!!!
This is incredible guys..
One faithful system start-up and its working now....
Praises to Heaven :)
-
O damn!!
Randomly got the error yet again...
Turned it off... its back in windows now...
The problem still exists :(
-
This might not help much, but you tried draining the static electricity from the system?
Btw depending on how vex you are with HP, you can fill out a complaint here (http://www.hpnotebookclassaction.com/index.html) :lol:
Apparently they are ready to file lawsuits...
-
lol i saw that site..and i will be filing a complaint soon....
As for the draining static electricity...I saw somewhere to remove battery, power....
And hold down power button for 10+ seconds...
Did that prior to flashing bios...
And well i'm posting this from the notebook right now...
Still getting sporadic system failures at start-up though...
-
the day after...
system refusing to boot...
:(
What to do :(
-
get down on your knees and pray
-
^done/did/doing that... :crybaby2:
K I posted this up on the HP Support Forums -
So I'm yet another user to have experienced the infamous wireless card failure...
Card fails...randomly begins to work while using the notebook...Then not working again..
3 months later...notebook doesn't start..
1 long beep, 2 short beeps...
The whole story can be found here with many other users with exact same problems:
http://www.topix.com/forum/computers/hp/T0MJR4DP7135S7QA6
Now...My problem is that I live outside of the US, namely Trinidad, Caribbean..
So its not simple as sending laptop to HP for repair..
Local pc store has tried to source the motherboard with no success...
So yesterday, I decided to try turning on the notebook... And it booted up!!! (After about 10 times of pressing the power button)...
This was a heaven sent moment that the notebook would even start after all those months!
So in XP now...I began a frantic search to see if there's any fix I can use as I'm in the notebook...
Read that I should update the bios...
I did so...and the system restarted perfectly.....
You can imagine the relief...
Kept restarting the system (different ways.. shut down, hibernation etc.....It works!
Then it goes again... same beep code... no starting up....
I kept trying to turn it back on with no success, til I decided to let it remain on...
By holding down the power button for a few seconds while it was on...I turned it off...
I turned it back on...and the system booted to the Windows was not shut down properly screen..
Safe Mode, Last known good configuration, Start normally... I started it normally...
Same sequence of events... Everytime I turn it off... It won't start... Let it start up for a few minutes til the system gets into windows... Turn it off, turn it back on...
Back to the windows boot screen...
So I have narrowed this down to an XP problem..
The system boots once XP was not shut down properly???
Anyhowz...In a desperate attempt at solving this problem..My notebook is now doing a Destructive Recovery...
Me hoping that it may fix the problem...
Any suggestions anyone?
1.) The Bios update helped the problem but did not solve it.... Another update can do the trick... (HP are you reading? Your update helped, please release another better one...)
2.) Could this really be a Windows XP problem? There are 3 things plaguing this widespread problem: Wireless Card, AMD processors and Bios...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Update: Destructive Recovery Complete.... Same Problem...
I can't boot windows...
I leave it on for a few minutes..Turn it off...Restart it ...and it boots back to the windows boot screen...
:|
Someone please help...
This is clearly a software problem..not hardware...
Nothing is wrong with the Video Adapter...As I have played full 3d games (Unreal Tournament 2004) while it was running....
The wireless card is working..its not defective...
The laptop motherboard is clearly working...
Ok the laptop in this thread has been unused for 1.5yrs.
1.5yrs ago it randomly booted and worked for about a month before dying completely.
Summarised background on the issue:
HP DV6040CA model laptop stopped booting. Black screen, 1 long beep 2 short beeps indicating video failure. Sent to HP, they fixed it under warranty and sent it back. 30mins of usage back to the same problem. Sent back to HP again, they replaced the motherboard. Laptop worked about 5months before video failure again.
Yesterday I saw the carcass there, and decided to read up if any DIY fixes had come to light/check prices on motherboards etc.
Seems the fix for this line of laptops is the same as the fix for a PS3 or Xbox 360.
The gpu needs to be reflowed.
Aside from putting together a PC tower I ain't no tech expert when it comes to the nitty gritty of things + I don't have a heat gun and thermal paste and whatever you guys would do to complete this operation.
Does anyone know anyone or can do a GPU reflow on this notebook?
Looked at some videos of people doing the reflow on youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=dv6000+reflow&aq=f (http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=dv6000+reflow&aq=f)
If the price is decent for the labor I won't mind paying something just to get back this notebook up and running.
Thanks.
