Title: Gems of Foreign Cinema
Post by: rassmatic on June 07, 2008, 06:44:51 PM
After 'acquiring' enough foreign films (mostly asian) to drive a grown man MAD, I've decided to create a thread where people can post their recommendations and trailers if possible. i'll start off with 4 that I've seen recently.

Casshern - don't know how this one slipped past my radar, but it's a DEFINITE MUST SEE!!!

CASSHERN TRAILER (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kk9fGI90qdM#)

Brotherhood of War - one wicked war movie. and a tear jerker too. kinda makes u realize how nice we have it here in T&T.

Taegukgi (Brotherhood of War) (KOREA 2004) - Trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nnx2CjhHADM#)

Shadowless Sword - if yuh thought Crouching Tiger was mad (or not), then please, PLEASE watch this. you won't be disappointed. i promise :happy0203:

Shadowless Sword (Korean Movie Trailer) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ho0ExxMfrWc#)

SPL aka Kill Zone - some dread action in this one. the ending is what make it a recommendation. real mad!

YouTube - Broadcast Yourself. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJgpvEU822s#)

ok, ok. so Casshern wasn't as mad as I initially made it out to be. but it was fairly entertaining. I have Princess Blade and The Returner on DVD, but haven't gotten around to see them yet. They look dread though. I didn't even know that there was a movie based on the Basilisk anime. but isn't Gennosuke a blind samurai? guess they're not following the manga to a tee. here's one i'm sure many people didn't know about. remember Dororo for the PS2?

怪俠多羅羅 Dororo Trailer (Chi Sub) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1cKIdET8T8#)

Geno isnt blind. In the anime he has the ability to instill fear into his enemy basically making them freeze. Oboro is the one with the eyes....by looking at them she can dispel any ninja ability they can use. However in this one she just f*cks them up......watch the movie and see.

am i the only one who thought B13 and The Host sucked? the former more than the latter. Battle Royale and Azumi was mad though. if you guys are lookin' for an asian movie to watch with your girl, check out Daisy. it's actually a romance movie, despite how the trailer looks. highly recommended......

believe me hoss, Daisy is one the best Korean movies i've seen in a long time. and that's coming from a guy that HATES ROMANCE FLICKS. a great storyline with just enough action to not make it boring. 4.5/5 stars.

Post by: Q on June 14, 2008, 01:49:56 PM
I've got no trailers (sorry) but I do have a list.

I thought B13 was BAD, WICKED SWEET. I don't think I've ever seen a free-running movie before (as opposed to sports and martial arts). I liked it. Leito FTW.

I liked Casshern the anime (Casshan). Movie wise, I thought StormRiders was a nice old school. Jackie Chan actually made a romance flick with Shu Qi (chinese chick from the 1st Transporter movie) named "Gorgeous". Imagine, even in a chick flick, Jackie Chan MUST fight. :awesome:

LOVED Shinobi. Gennosuke was a BOSS. There was also this dude that reminded me of Ukyo (long white hair, regenerative abilities). The varied ninja in this movie kicked ass for me. Does anyone know if a KOF live action movie exists? If not, I have a cast all lined up. Mark Dacascos as Kyo FTW.

Add another 4 to the list.....

Truck - Didn't expect much from this one, but it turned out pretty damn good. If you're in for a good thriller, you can't go wrong with this.

Truck (2008) trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-yB9nZ1LGc#)

Sex Is Zero - Probably the funniest asian film I've ever seen. It's like an asian 'American Pie' or 'Dorm Daze'. There's a part 2, but it wasn't as funny as the first.

Sex is Zero Trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gaxh1HQ_AxM#)

Princess Aurora - A story of a mother, grieving the death of her child, who goes on a murderous revenge spree. Highly recommended.

The Chaser - I saw this one some months back and forgot to post it. Absolutely amazing thriller. A remake should be hitting theaters soon. If you have to see one of the 4, make it this.

Just saw Goemon. Went in with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised. 90% CG like Casshern the movie, but was a lot better.

If you're in for some over-the-top, anime style action, then look now further.

Beautiful  - Now this movie was creepy. Very good film, but just as scary. If sexy girls in Korea really have it this had, well hmm.....doh watch this wit ur girl fellas. It WILL freak them out.

Fighter in the wind is the story of the man behind KyoKushin Karate, Choi Baedal.

His legacy inspired many game characters and one of his students was the inspiration behind Ryu.

The movie I thought was a work of fiction. Imagine my surprise to learn that is a true story!

How the hell a korean will steal away to japan and then beat up all the best martial arts in the land and start a world movement of warriors? madness.

WHAT? The man who was in large part responsible for the fighting beast that is Bruce Lee? Ppl don't know this? There was a Master-Student photo at the end of the movie for goodness' sake. No wonder I had to translate/narrate in CC8 when I went. WTMC.

at the end of the movie they might make the connection but it's pretty hard to put two and two together before that.

While every trini has heard of bruce lee, very very few have ever heard of ip man. (well until now, lol)

If you ask the average man on the street what was bruce lee's fighting style's origin, I'm certain they won't know it was wing chun. They probably won't know his style was Jeet June Do either. lol

not everyone is an enthusiast.

Good thing we have this thread yes, foreign gems iwmc.

well if u decided to go back and read previous posts, u would see that ppl usually post movies here that they find entertaining.

if we were only to post the best of the best, this thread would be very short. so lemme hear this now, which ones post aren't gems in your opinion.

oh, an BTW, when u find something special and worth a look between piles of crap, i call it a Gem. so yeah, i kinda kno what a gem is FYI.

Yeah man took in the brotherhood.

It was good if a bit long. A very gripping and brutal account of war and how it affects the lives of so many.

Easily 9 out of 10 M1 Garands.

Art of the Devil 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5MHcvoK-38#)

Watched this last night. Oh My F***.

I was 'hooked' from the opening scene (lol)

The trailer thankfully doesn't give away the most f**ked up parts but it does a decent job. I found it a bit long too, so put some time aside and try not to watch it if you can't finish it in one sitting is my advice. Probably should have watched the first one first, but it is apparently totally unconnected to the first. Definitely going to look for it, and also a 3rd movie is supposed to beon the way / already out that is a prequel to this one.

This is on Netflix dubbed for those who have it.

What's with all the devil titles??

but I think it would be better if you post the ones that you've watched and think are true "gems of foreign cinema"

So the title of this thread will not become misleading.

Maybe make a new one for just posting upcoming releases. That way we will know which ones have been sanctioned by you as opposed to just foreign films in general.
Title: Re: Gems of Foreign Cinema

i think ur right. posting movies i've never seen does indeed go against the purpose of the thread. things may be kinda slow though. i'm not really getting the time to watch all the movies i've been downloading. and i'll try to keep the devil titles to a minimum.

lol, sounds like a plan.

honestly, I've watched like 90% of the foreign films you've recommended and was not disappointed.

So even if updates are slow, based on past performance, I'm sure it would be worth the wait!
Title: Re: Gems of Foreign Cinema
Post by: rassmatic on May 20, 2011, 08:43:27 PM
I've watched the 4 movies I posted on the 1st. I can fully recommend Bedevilled, I Saw the Devil and Blades of Blood. All grade A films. Be warned though, Bedevilled & I Saw the Devil were extremely graphic (especially the latter) so if you're not into intense violence, look elsewhere. There's also a fair amount of sexual content between the 2, so be doubly warned.

The 'Better Tomorrow' remake, although entertaining, killed it for me at the end. Let's just say it ended NOTHING like the original. Kind of a fail IMO.

If you have to see one of the 3 recommendations, make it 'I Saw the Devil'. It....was.....AWESOME!!!! :happy0203:

Haven't posted anything here in a while. Not coming across too many worthwhile foreign flicks lately. But here are a few that I can wholeheartedly recommend...

The Man From Nowhere

OMFG!!! Watch this movie NOW!!!! One of the best, if not THE best, Korean movie I've ever seen! Right up there with Brotherhood of War.

A Bittersweet Life

Almost as mad as The Man From Nowhere. Byung-hun Lee is a freakin' BOSS!!! A must watch!

Infernal Affairs

The classic that "The Departed" was based on. Number 227 in IMDb's Top 250 movies of all time. Need I tell you to watch? There's a second and third movie out. Yet to see the third (the second wasn't as good but still entertaining).

Time for some more recommendations. w00t! Decided to give the asian films a break this time around.....

The Brest Fortress

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1343703/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1343703/)

An amazing war movie which pays homage to those who died for their Russian homeland. A dark and terrifying view from a losing standpoint. Highly recommended.

This one's been gaining popularity with the coming release of the American version. Decided to watch the trilogy the other day and was pleasantly surprised. Do yourself a favor and watch this one before the remake comes out. While all 3 movies were good, the first was definitely the best.

Amores Perros

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0245712/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0245712/)

Another great, story-driven film. The film is constructed from three distinct stories linked by a car accident that brings the characters briefly together. Think of a movie like "Crash", and you'd get an idea of how it's structured. I fully enjoyed this one and have no problems recommending it.

An amazing, enthralling and very disturbing film. Can be a bit slow, but if you follow through with the story, you'll be in for one hell of a shocker by the end. OMFG the ending!!! I still quiver when I think about it. A definite recommend for those who rather story over action.

Incendies Trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDf-XuYid1A&hd=1&ob=av3e#ws)

These movies may not be for everyone. With the exception of the first, they rely almost entirely on their story and great acting as opposed to cheap thrills and explosions. If you have an appreciation for those types of films, you won't be disappointed.

Just to clarify, the american version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is not a remake of the swedish film but a different adaptation of the book.

^yeah, what he said.

EDIT: now thinkin' bout it, doesn't that still count as a remake?
Title: Re: Gems of Foreign Cinema
Post by: Archer on September 26, 2011, 04:48:36 PM
Not really eh, cuz technically they not remaking the original movie but adapting the book their way. I read the writer for the American version never even saw the swedish version but just writing based off of the book. So we may have different scenes etc.

Got some catching up to do in this thread as well.

Started with Attack the Block (funny because I watched this just after Paul which had the same actor in it, purely by coincidence)

The English sure can cuss and act a fool.

Very entertaining. Crude, but entertaining.

I'll give it 8.5 female pheromones out of 10

Better than Paul, which was more a 6.5 on the alien movie scale.

Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was damn good.

Easily a 9 unsolved murders out of 10.

Classic "whodunnit" formula. Never gets old.

Starring Lee Byung-Hun (Storm Shadow) and Choi Min-sik (Oldboy)

At first I thought this was just one of those gruesome thrillers but it turned out to be  a cross between a kick-up and a thriller. Hunter becomes the hunted, the set peices were so beautifully done it's amazing. Def a keeper for my movie library. 8/10.

Couldn't decide if this belonged in the kick-ups thread or here, oh well lol.

it has action, but not really a kick-up per-say. posted this one a couple pages back too. Wyatt hated it based on the name alone. lol. but it was a great movie. highly recommended.

Wyatt hated it......he mad or what lmao.

Excellent movie. The way the shifting tones never felt out of place and those action scenes omg.....Lee Byung-Hun is a boss. I need to watch that again soon.

lol, yeah, it wasn't just this title alone. Rage had posted about three in quick succession that all had an "evil" theme. From the trailers, looked like gore for the sake of gore.

Not my thing

So I skipped 'em all.

But thanks for the second nomination. Will put this one back on the "watch list"

Been trying to catch up on my mainstream list these days. Got a backlog of like 80 movies

But before I get to my recommendations, I just thought I'd tell anyone who hadn't watched the Vengeance Trilogy (Sympathy for Mr Vengeance, Lady Vengeance and Oldboy) to do so, NOW. Looked at them over in 1080p goodness last week and it was absolutely beautiful. They've most likely been mentioned before, but they deserve a second nod.

As you should. Bess series right there. Wasn't a huge fan of Lady Vengeance but it was still pretty good. And now, on to the recommends....

Confessions

Quote
A psychological thriller of a grieving mother turned cold-blooded avenger with a twisty master plan to pay back those who were responsible for her daughter's death.

One the best movies I've seen out of Japan in a while. People refer to it as a modern day revenge masterpiece, and I think I would have to agree. Trust me when I say DO NOT JUDGE THIS MOVIE SOLELY ON THE FOOLISH TRAILER BELOW!!! It was the only one I could find on Youtube. Watch it and judge for yourself. For the first 10-15 minutes, I started to get bored, wondering what the big deal was, but when the story gets going, you'll be hooked. Do yourself a favor and WATCH!

Brought it back across to Mexico with this one. A marvelous film that won numerous awards back in 09. Great cast and intriguing story. A no-brainer to recommend.

I honestly can't pick one out these 3 as the best, so if possible watch em all! You won't be sorry.

so i watched "flying swords of dragon gate" tonight, and i must admit, it wasn't as good as i thought it would be. but then again, i was never a huge fan of all that superhuman antics in live-action films. way too much flying for me. and it was obviously designed to be seen in 3D. the amount of stuff that kept flying at the screen had me crackin up. but hey, if u like Crouching Tiger, u MIGHT like this one.

Excellent movie starring Batman Christian Bale. Can be VERY brutal at times, so be warned. Despite that, it still warrants an extremely high recommendation.

Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1728196/

Takashi Miike does it again with his re-imaging of the 1962 classic Harakiri. This one's just as good as his last film 13 Assassins, but may seem slow for those with show attention spans. It's more drama than action. Never-the-less, the story was engrossing and quite enjoyable. Another no-brainer to recommend.

Castaway on the Moon

Just watched this one today and absolutely loved it. A truly beautiful film. Think of it as the Korean version of Castaway, and you'd get somewhat of an idea of what it's like. It's a bit of a tearjerker too. Don't dismiss it as another happy-go-lucky movie based on the trailer. It's well deserving of the 8.0 it was given on IMDb. Recommended to anyone.

Meanwhile the "paulistano" Edgar, who killed a mother and her son two years ago in a car accident, invites the "motoboy" and thief Velinha to steal the escorted courier that is carrying the pouch with the money to be delivered to Jader. How their lives are entwined?

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1753722/

An amazing film out of Brazil. So good that Hollywood's apparently already planning to remake it. The perfect blend of action and storytelling. Think of it as a mix of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Pulp Fiction and Smokin' Aces. All round trippy fun.
