Ok I've always been prowling amazon looking to pounce as soon as they start slashing prices(yea I'm a cheap bastard so what :lol: )
I thought it would be cool to have a thread where you can post deals you've come across online, yes prices will eventually change over time but it would be great to really save ourselves some cash.

Sweet trini tech deals I think would be better.
Highlighting a "bess" price online on a hot ticket item is great.
But doing online exclusively is kind of limiting (and is already handsomely taken care of by pricewatch, techbargains, etc...)
No sense leaving out the local market (we should be supporting local if they are giving us a good deal, shouldn't we?) Especially on bigger items and ones where warranty is critical, like hard drives.
So make it sweet deals for trinis and you've got a winner.

Star Commercial is on Monroe road, opposite Low Cost supermarket, in ah old abandoned looking building.
Prices are usually very good, although u need the same business requirements as HiTouch to make an account with them.

Downloaded that pricelist (with the spanish english) and I have to wonder if they have all of those items in stock?
Seen many such lists that when you inquire, the items aren't actually available in the store.

Well i was browsing online this morning, stumbled upon PRW's newly updated site. Saw they had an APC 1200VA UPS for $1299, same thing what Arc buy the other day. SO far them have it the cheapest locally as to import one go be much higher. See Arcman's review somewhere on d site for reviews on this unit. Go get one! :D

I've read on the Z-cinema. The remote seems cool, certainly nothing that i'd ever use, though. But the sound quality seems to be the set's strength. Even so, sacrificing volume and power is inexcusable in my book. Also not forgetting that a good sound card on your pc would bring the sound quality of the 2 on the same level.

All the reviews recommend that those speakers be used primarily on a media center
or HTPC...NOT for gaming. Jeez.

if the z2300 is louder and more readily availably locally, that would be the better option.
You can always get a remote for your media pc / htpc for less than us$30.00 and that will be tons cheaper to ship. A small remote vs huge speaker boxes. The volumetric weight will not be kind. I rest my case!
Capitan, as for not using it....you as a techie might not....but the remote was a big hit with the misses.
it speaks their language. lol. You just lay on the videos/movies/tv series thick on a htpc, give them the remote and boom....they're distracted for hours. nag free gaming ftw.

Uh...ya. The warranty I get is the warranty they get. Of course once I have the same product in stock I can just do a direct exchange one time and claim warranty on the side so the customer doesnt have to wait how much ever months.

I LOVE Outlook but I can see why Microsoft would choose to omit it from a "Home" version of their Office suite.
Same for a database. Do a quick poll on these forums and see who built a relational database at home in the last 11 months using Microsoft Access. Even amidst our tech heavy demographic, the percentage will be very slim.
Those apps are better left in the "Office" version of Microsoft Office. lol

Trouble is, those Seagate 1.5tb drive have PROBLEMS (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductReview.aspx?Item=N82E16822148337) with crashing etc. The Samsung drives are much safer. I have 5 external drives, all with Samsung eco green disks, the newest more than 6 months old, never had a problem yet. They are only 7200rpm but I dont think the increased speed is worth the risk.
My 2c of course. Its yall money.

Look at where Seagate is on that list. I have three of those exact Sammy eco drives and knock on wood, no problems.
The Seagate might have a good price today but I think it is not trustworthy.

Well is a good thing I only give these people a 1 US. This app has not worked since I installed it.
I keep getting a 'unable to load stored data' message when trying to start it.
For such a 'simple' app to be giving all that trouble, it aint even worth it as 'free'.
I not wasting time troubleshooting that. Rightmark has a nice, free utility with a very accurate battery meter in it. I'll go back to that.

I've been using a coworker's Kindle at work recently and I must say reading books on this is definitely easier on the eyes than any laptop/desktop monitor.

Rotational hdd's, yes, ssd's, no. No motors to burn, no heads to crash. Even taking into account electrical degradation that comes with a used ssd, I am very confident that it will have years of life remaining, at least enough than when im ready to upgrade to a higher capacity, a NEW drive will have a cost per gb ratio similar to what they offering in these refurbs.

Phoenix thats a good point, a lot of issues users experienced were due to faulty firmware.
It is my understanding that they have released new firmware that adds TRIM support and fixes a lot of those issues.
I think its worth noting, though that the drives they will be selling are based on the Barefoot Idilinx controller which is 2009's model as opposed to the newer and slightly faster Sandforce controller for this year. From reviews I read too they perform on par with the x25m's anyway.
Still, a ssd for that price is a steal of a deal.

It's a 25.5 inch ASUS monitor, has VGA, HDMI and DVI connectors. Has a 2ms response time and works quite well. You can check out more detailed specs about it on Newegg but the reason why I listed some specs is so you can compare what I got for the price paid as opposed to buying one locally.
Now I got it for $267.54us at that time and paid 588TT to get it in my hands from UPXpress.
So that's roughly 2298TT I paid for that monitor. Is it worth it??? Of course it is worth it!!!
Well unless you somehow get a pissed off customs officer that thinks your monitor is really a tv then that might suck lol. Go brave and buy a monitor online, buy eeeeeet!!! :P
Only drawback is a DOA/ warranty which we ballzy internet buyers take the risk with shopping online. We piss in the face of danger and fart down their throats lol.

Well, as I said, it's a "collection" (dunno why u put in quotes). I'm not just downloading for kicks. It's a hobby. I don't see comic collectors re-reading their books every month, but they still buy them right? I've spent so much time putting my collection in order that deleting anything isn't even an option.
and PS, i don't have a lot of devil and dismemberment films Wyatt. if i do indeed have a movie with the word "devil" in it, it's because I saw some pretty good reviews on it. tryin to make meh look like some kinda devil worshiper of wha? lol. it's true that most of my movies aren't family oriented, but there aren't any kids at my home, so why worry?

I intend to watch most of them over sooner or later, but it doesn't make sense doing that now when more than half of them are unwatched. I have family member and friends who watch the movies I have too, so why would I delete them just because I personally saw them? ppl tend to believe that because digital media can be so easily deleted and reacquired that it shouldn't hold any type of value. but I disagree. just my opinion.

Checked out the Laptop City sale this morning. Damn near open the store for them, fuss I went early lol. Bought a few items (Webcam, Laptop sleeve, Sim card backup device, etc) but there was nothing that particularly caught my attention. Mostly old stuff they wanted sold off. The Caveats: google around and make sure that you know what your specific build/machine needs. On my Asus UL20A, it required me to upgrade my BIOS, change the hard drive status in BIOS to IDE for the Windows 7 install, but then do a very specific registry tweak right after to switch it back to AHPI, but make sure I used the Microsoft AHPI driver and not the Intel Storage Matrix one that would've been installed if I just put back everything that the UL20A originally shipped with.
The Con: it's a big one... like lots of Sandforce controller SSD's, there's a big BSOD issue when sleeping. This is a VERY big deal if you're putting this in a laptop, and it's unclear how seriously SanDisk is taking this: [...]

Less than 50gigs used on my 128gig Crucial m4 with BF3, Office 2010 and all the other supporting drivers, plugins uptates etc and a bunch of small programs.
Gamers on a tight budget could make the 64gig ssd work, just with one or two games max loaded on it though.

yup all good points.
You could also save some more space by moving some directories to another drive and use symbolic links to link them back to their original location. This is a bit advanced and could lead to problems down the road if not done properly.

Man...this thing is sooo full of win. I'm not sure how I existed without it. :laughing7:
I was a bit skeptical of the shape, but it's PERFECT for one-handed operation.
if you've used a Blackberry, you can use this.
The little circular optical trackpad there doubles as a mouse left-click, and the ridged vertical line under it is the scroll area,
both of which function quite well. The trackpad is acceleration-sensitive, so if I scroll slowly, the cursor moves slowly,
and if I flick my thumb quickly, the cursor flies across the entire screen. This is GREAT, considering the size of the trackpad.
Backlighting is great. Typing is great. You'll mostly be typing in movie titles anyway, not drafting a thesis.
Multimedia controls work like they're supposed to...no complaints there.
The volume buttons will only change the volume of the app you're in, and not Windows' system volume (unless all other
apps are not in focus or minimized). This may be a good or bad thing depending on your preference.
The only thing I miss is the middle-mouse button, but CTRL-C makes up for that.
For HTPC operation...I can totally and wholeheartedly recommend this.

...and yes, works like a charm in the BIOS. I was able to navigate all the menus using the arrow keys,
and use 'Enter' and 'Escape' to go up and down all the menu trees.

I'm quite sure the price was higher, and the firmware buggier at the time.
Knowing OCZ's track record, I'm pretty sure all the issues have been fixed by now.

From my own perspective...there are more than a few mp-based games I've purchased that I wish I could have 'tried' beforehand. Then I could have decided if to buy it or not.
I know I'm not the only one who only found out how disappointing a game was AFTER you bought it.
....but everybody's motivation is different.
Some people just refuse to spend money on software, period.

I'd recommend Spec Ops to anyone. It doesn't have the best graphics and the action get repetitive coming to the end, but the story was absolutely boss. Had me hooked, especially coming to the end.

Max I really wanted to ever spend on a handset was $1500tt so I don't have to worry about being extra careful with it, any "good" phone for $700 I was gonna jump on like Santa at a ho house

Lets say for example.....Digicel decided to offer a brilliant $99 a month data plan for 10GB. 4G Inclusive of some talk time and text.
Bmobile will have you by the gonads for two years, unable to make the switch to Digi penalty free.
If we only had one major player in town, I would feel comfortable being locked in.
Begun, the 4G war has.
Digicel vs Bmobile.
For that reason, I'm out (in the voice of Daymond from The Shark Tank)

Yeah we'll see how it goes but if it is any indication so far they seem to match each other in terms of price. Perhaps service quality etc. will be differentiating. A price war will simply "bottom" out. I wouldn't want to switch if it was for a small discount, changing numbers is a hassle for me. It seems like they following the North American model where contracts like these are common.
Think about it if Digicel did have a huge price drop and bmobile didn't respond with either lower prices or upgraded packages their customers would be pissed. They wouldn't want to lose those customers after 24 months, that would be pretty short sighted strategy. I haven't really been following Digicel in terms of bundled minutes/prepaid costs but how have they fared compared to Bmobile over the past 4 years or so? Have they ever "beaten" Bmobile on price?

Well for starters, Digicel was first to market with 4G. People like myself on the green team had to salt with EDGE.
If you were locked in on contract....you wouldn't have the option to switch without penalty.

Suppose they drop another network upgrade next year. Want to risk being left behind again?
And the more people bmobile can get to take those contracts, is the more assured they would be of their pricing strategy. Why reduce prices when they have X amount of customers locked in at $450+ vat for two years?
Some of my family swear by Digicel. Apparently cell to cell its tons cheaper than bmobile. They take advantage of all those talk for free after the first 3 minutes type deals. I don't use it personally (as mentioned before, stuck on the green team)

I'm considering it for the misses because she couldn't care less whether is 3G 4G or Swappi inna 4D
If something better comes along within the two years, it won't be a problem.
Will keep my primary phone contract less though, so at least one of us could have that flexibility.
Then again, thanks to the integrated wireless hotspot on the droid, one epic 4G can serve two phones (once we're in close proximity)

I can attest to one thing though 4g coverage is hands down better on Digi, I don't ever drop to edge but bmobile is a different story, located between central, north and east. Hopefully in time they will get up to par

I have to agree with zerk though....the general rule of thumb is 10 to 1.
So if an item is US$290.00 on Amazon, it would be reasonably priced at TT$2900.00 (taking into consideration duty, vat, shipping, profit, overheads)
So with that said, the price is actually pretty decent!

A difference of just over 350 TT.
You would willingly give away 350 dollars just so? They said '3-5 days delivery' which means they have to order it, so why can't you do the same?

Carizone advertises on GATT so it should be no surprise to anyone why wyatt is defending them.
Personally, the times I called them about stuff they have listed on their website, every time they said there's none in stock and it will take 1.5 weeks. I find it extremely difficult to find a reason to do business with them when I could get stuff in myself quicker and cheaper.
But everybody have to eat ah food out here. Choose for yourself.

Chiney, I have ordered several monitors myself for customers that have landed even cheaper than that.
Doesn't change the fact that 1) customs could charge you hot and negate the savings
2) the monitor could arrive with dead pixels or worse and then you have to ship it back yourself (negating savings)
3) no one has yet to post a cheaper "local" option.
As far as deals go, I still stand by zerk's post....it is a sweet one and doesn't deserve the fight down.
I find a lot of us are a little to quick to attack the local scene without consideration for their own people. Crab in barrel attitude.
Local companies have different economics to deal with so naturally their price will not beat Amazon / Newegg.
However, if they can offer me a price reasonably close to one abroad, I have no issue supporting them.
Conversely, they have no issue supporting us (as Awesome pointed out....cariszone has been a long standing sponsor)
Not sure we will see Amazon or NewEgg sponsoring a GATT event anytime soon.

I've gotten burnt with importing a monitor already, had to pay duty.
If the savings were significant I'd try ordering one online again.
The last 2 monitors I bought locally were not that much more than if I had ordered online and paid for shipping. As wyatt said it is more the convenience/warranty factor.
I'd say that is the exception though, for anything else tech related I order through captain interwebs.

I guess it comes down to your experience. Had a bad one the first time I brought in a monitor so didn't bother ordering others online. Maybe next time if I find a sweet deal online I'd try again. That said I'd never buy a tablet in trinidad.

But let me break it down for Arcman and Chiney real slow and basic like so they can understand.
Fact #1: People have imported items and were charged duty and vat (even when they should not have been)
Fact #2: People have imported items and they arrived defective
Fact #3: Local vendors face different economics to NewEgg and Amazon, so their prices will never be LESS (not withstanding a clearance sale or such)
Fact #4: Local vendors sponsor and support GATT. (Very unlikely that Amazon / NewEgg will do the same. If GATT does not support local vendors then the "crab in barrel" attitude applies.
Let me break down the crab in barrel analogy so you guys can understand it as well. If the crabs all worked together...many of them would be able to escape the barrel......however, if the crabs are only concerned with their own personal escape and ignore the plight of the others around them, the majority of them will languish in the barrel.
So to further nail the point....if a staff member like berserk, is promoting what he sees as a great local deal by a local vendor (cariszone)....he is helping that crab out of the barrel......and when Cariszone sees success and is profitable, they will in turn sponsor GATT events and also help us out of the barrel.
If another Staff member like Arcmanov, says Cariszone is robbing people...and that their price is outrageous....people won't buy from Cariszone, the company fails (sinks into the bottom of the barrel) and now they won't be able to sponsor GATT events (and we also sink into the bottom of the barrel)
I have yet to see someone suggest a better local price for an excellent monitor as Zerk posted. Until then, I still very much consider it a sweet deal and maintain that it should not be maligned by others as "robbery".
This especially applies to items like Cases, Monitors, etc....where local prices are viable. I have bought many in Trinidad as opposed to Amazon / NewEgg, so this is not just cheap talk. Leading by example here. Arc himself knows I just bought a monitor from him. Always been one to support the local scene as best I can.

I had this same issue with JK Entertainment, and you presented this same defence.
How do you know it won't make them reconsider their prices? Local pricing reeks of an attitude that suggests that merchants feel as if local consumers don't have internet access, and by extension, totally ignorant of the actual retail prices of electronic items.
At the end of the day, everyone can make up their own mind if it's a 'sweet deal' or not...it's your money.

I think is only a 5 days return/replace/refund policy they have.
Only bought two memory kits since, no problems were had.
EDIT: 5 days return, 30 days warranty on most electronic items.

If you missed that class in school, let me explain the economics behind it briefly.
Some items with decent demand can be imported in bulk over sea (which is considerably cheaper than via air)
A business owner could purchase 20+ units and get a better price than you would via retail from Amazon or NewEgg.
These two factors, when put together can result in a cheaper final price to you in Trinidad vs importing it yourself.
Of course, items like high end GPUs and exotic motherboards won't have enough demand to warrant that. Basic items like a 21" LCD monitor, Keyboards, Generic mice, System Cases, Line Conditioners, etc.....tend to fall in that category.

nah man...just been in the import game for almost two decades so I know it like the back of my hand.
The x10 rule is general....a good consumer guide. I use it even when looking at kitchen utensils and such for the misses. lol
Brisk bar code scan with my android phone and insta-check the price online. If it is a food warmer for example, going on amazon at US$30.00 and the store selling it for TT$295.99 we'll still buy it instead of importing.
As is the case with most rules, there will be exceptions.
If we were going to buy 40 of those warmers and could afford to wait 4 - 6 weeks for it to arrive, we would import via sea and it would work out much cheaper.

In the case of my friend who got the defective galaxy tab, it ended up costing her more than the local price after having to ship it back and wait weeks to get a replacement.
More in terms of $$ and more in terms of time as well. Poor thing.
As with many things of this nature....there isn't a right or wrong answer. It always "depends"
A lot of factors to consider. Do you want warranty? Do you want the item right away, or can you wait weeks for delivery? Are you a risk taker and don't mind rolling the dice with customs? Are you comfortable with ebay? Do you have an Amazon Prime membership? Do you have a reliable sky box service? Is the item large and would be costly to ship via air? etc....etc...
After someone reads this discussion, they will be able to way all the options and take the best course for them.
Also, staff would be less callous in derailing local sweet deals by comparing them to foreign yard sticks.
Apples to Apples, you know the deal.
I'd say it was a healthy discussion all things considered.

Unfortunately, there are no workarounds.
EA needs to get their act together and fix the bloody thing.
I cannot believe after nearly 3 years, that EA refuses to fix Origin to be compatible with the Caribbean/Latin American region.

The Left 4 Dead 1 maps have all been ported into the sequel, making Left 4 Dead 2 the definitive entry in the series. There are also plenty of fan-made campaigns and mods on the Steam workshop, including a Helm's Deep Lord of the Rings map and a mod that turns your party of survivors into Velociraptors.
According to a Left 4 Dead 2 Steam announcement, the game will be free until 10AM PST 26/12/2013. Go, go, go.
