The June issue of Shueisha's Jump Square magazine is announcing on Thursday that production on a new Rurouni Kenshin anime project has been green-lit. More information will be provided in future issues of Jump Square.

The magazine also noted that the Blu-ray Disc versions of the two Rurouni Kenshin original video anime (OVA) projects and the Rurouni Kenshin: Ishin Shishi no Chinkonka [Requiem] film will ship between August 24 and October 26. A compilation CD will ship on July 27. Rurouni Kenshin, Meiji Kenkaku Romantan Saisen, a new game for the Sony PSP system, already shipped last month.

Nobuhiro Watsuki's original 1994-1999 samurai manga in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump inspired a television anime series that is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year. Viz Media published the manga in North America, and Media Blasters' AnimeWorks label released the television anime. ADV Films released the two OVA projects and the film under the licenser's prescribed title Samurai X.

Quote
A few hours ago Natalie confirmed rumors about the new Rurouni Kenshin project, which will officially be a 2-part 'Shin Kyoto-Hen' OVA. The first part of the video anime will premiere in Japanese theaters this December.

The New Kyoto Arc has been told previously in Nobuhiro Watsuki's original manga, as well as the anime adaptation. This time the fight between Kenshin Himura and Makoto Shishio will be told from the perspective of Oniwabanshu ninja Miso Makimachi.

The OVA is being animated by Studio DEEN, with Kazuhiro Furuhashi (Rurouni Kenshin TV/OVA, You're Under Arrest) returning to direct. Screenplays are being handled by Mari Okada (CANAAN, Toradora!), and original Rurouni Kenshin composer Noriyuki Asakura is doing the soundtrack.

The voice cast remains largely unchanged, and includes Mayo Suzukaze (Kenshin Himura), Miki Fujitani (Kaoru Kamiya), Miina Tominaga (Yahiko Myoujin), Yuji Ueda (Sanosuke Sagara), Tomo Sakurai (Misao Makimachi), Yoshito Yasuhara (Aoshi Shinomori), Masanori Ikeda (Makoto Shishio) and Ken Narita (Hajime Saito).

Looks awesome to me.

I still hold the Rurouni Kenshin: Trust and Betrayal OVA's as the greatest anime work of all time

and I quote

Quote
Rurouni Kenshin: Trust & Betrayal is a series that goes far beyond its comic-book origins, testing the limits of not only its franchise, but the medium of original video animation as a storytelling device" and that it "surpasses the original television series in many ways"

So an OVA is most welcome!

A continuation of the series is still possible after. This may be just a way of getting it back into ppl's heads. Either way it'll still be welcomed plus these OVA's will include material from the manga that was left out.

EDIT: I just noticed the pics in the link posted by Sniper are from a live action movie...Hmmm. Diff topic there but still interesting.

OMG Yesssssssssssssssssssss updated visuals rocks!!!! But i agree with the previous posts in that it would have been better if this was a continuation of the manga as the anime never finished the story but crammed it with fillerz still i guess everyone is cashin in the nostalgia thing.

i didnt enjoy it...yeh the animation was good and crisp but the story alot different and the original fight scene from the anime was better in the old one as compare to the new

I enjoyed it alot. Aside from the stunning animation,
Spoiler (hover to show)
really put the cherry on the icing. The fighting was violent and gory, and if you really weren't a fan I find it hard to understand quite what was going on or to be attached to any of the characters. But I can see this wasn't made to draw new fans, but as more of a gift to the old fans.

I know I was expecting an anime series but making an ova out of the greatest anime arc of all time is really something to rejuvenate this anime. I look forward to part 2, the live action and hopefully an ova of the final arc sometime in the future.

I thought it was quite good.they moved away from the over the top totally outrageous moves to a more realistic serious anime.sure they changed pieces here and there but the heart of the anime I think is still very much there
