Title: Mez 2k12 Rig
Post by: Mez on October 25, 2011, 09:14:15 AM
Aight, So I'm in the market for a snazzy new PC.
Rules of Engagement
I do not need - Case, Keyboard, Mouse (gonna get that ish here)

Specifications: 19+ inch screen
8+ gigs of ram (12 to make me feel speshul)
and an i7 Processor.
an SSD for the OS (Dont need much else, have lots of external storage and I can always purchase a HD later on)

Budget = in the vicinity of $7,500 TT - $10,000

Would love to see some different options and some rationale as to why you chose 1 over the other.

*Parts can be sourced from numerous places online but ideally it would save $ on Shipping if it were a minimum amt of suppliers.

BEGIN! *watches swarm*

I am at pains to find fault with Hard O/C's choices.

You might want to look at one of
Corsair's Hydro Series CPU coolers, like the H80 or H100.

As for the SSD, look no further than the Crucial M4 128 GB.
It seems like price is not an issue, so have at it.

What bout a GFX Card OC?
Soundcard?

Where would u suggest sourcing the monitor?

If you buying a GPU right this second, I'd actually recommend a GTX 580.  However, for the price of that single 580, you can get two 6950s, but I only mention that because i'm a staunch advocate of 'bang-for-buck'.  Still...running multiple video cards brings with it a whole 'nother set of issues....like ensuring that the power-supply you've chosen is sufficient.

A for sound, I can recommend  the Asus Xonar DX...optical, as well as analog outputs.  Stellar performance for the price.

I mentioned power supply before, but I'll let others tell you about them Corsair PSUs.  Really top-notch kit.

At that budget, I would go with the GTX580 as well (especially after seeing that Physx vid with Batman)

Wouldn't bother with a sound card though.

I'd put that money into 16GB of memory and the biggest size SSD / LCD affordable.

a 23" LCD is meh

For a gaming rig of that calibre, 26" is the mininum to go

28" would be ideal.

The Asus monitor is still a boss and highly recommended (after about a year+ of stellar service)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236047

(out of stock at that link, but from the reviews speak for themselves)

They have a newer model but 16:9 ratio (1080p instead of 1920x1200 max res...better for movies but less stellar for office productivity)

http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-VE276Q-27-Inch-Wide-16/dp/B003UT2C4U/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1319565028&sr=8-3

If you want your screen  to double as a TV you can go with the Samsung Touch of Color range with built in tuner but run the risk of import duties and input lag. Due to it being classed as a TV instead of a PC Monitor.

Post by: Mez on October 25, 2011, 03:28:09 PM
Well I have a TV and a long ass HDMI cord so no i wont need the monitor to double as a TV
AND i have limited *height* on the desk i'm going with so the 19-23" is about the max i can go.

I'd go with this ssd (http://www.amazon.com/Crucial-2-5-Inch-Solid-State-CT128M4SSD2/dp/B004W2JKZI/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1319571278&sr=8-2)

I have one and based on my personal experience, it is HIGHLY recommended.

The final loadout on Mez's 2k12 rig purchased last night:

GeForce GTX 580 3Gig Card
Corsair 750 W Modular PSU
Intel i5 2500K Processor
Asus Sabertooth P67 Mobo
Crucial m4 64GB SSD
Corsair Vengeance 16 Gig Ram.

It should be built by Mid December. :) hoo-rahh!
Title: Re: Mez 2k12 Rig

Yesss man, yuh inside.

Consider the Corsair Hydro H60 (http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Cooling-Hydro--High-Performance-CWCH60/dp/B004MYFOE2/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1322202438&sr=8-5) as your CPU cooler.

A real no frills approach to liquid cooling...on tha cheap, and you can add another fan later
on to increase its efficiency.  That is...if your case has the 120 mm fan mount to hold it.

Post by: Mez on November 25, 2011, 08:47:09 AM
Well I think I may need a new case ( the original one was generic but i'm not sure if it would fit.)
and apparently there are CPU coolers available here so i skimped on the extras.

BLUEFANS IWMC!

Title: Re: Mez 2k12 Rig

Nice specs. The only thing I would have done differently is to go for at least a 128gb ssd. You'll find that after an OS install and a few programs that you'll be almost out of space. Gonna have to install games on regular hdd.

Doh worry there Mez, they all will come in time. Your biggest concern is that everything not coming in one package, thus driving up the skybox prices as each group of items attract their own freight and customs charges.

Other than that, good times.

Also, I hope you getting Battlefield 3 to run with the boys eh.

What I want to know is if Mez doh intend to OC da b1tch... that 580 starving on dat CPU imho. Not saying all games wont play BESSSS, but why spend the extra dosh on the K version if yuh not gonna crank the juice?
Title: Re: Mez 2k12 Rig
Post by: TriniXaeno on November 29, 2011, 07:38:39 PM
I've got an 80GB SSD and it is a little tight.

Thank God for "Steam Mover"

Unfortunately, if EA has their way with Origin, that won't be much help in the future as more and more games will exist outside of STEAM and would be more difficult to move around on the fly like that.

Hopefully SSDs will get cheaper so that you can treat yourself to a 500GB SSD for next Christmas.

I'm assuming Overclocking shortens the lifespan of your hardware,
I'm assuming like having ur engine run at a higher RPM/temp for long.

Therefor, until I reach a stage where I cant run the game satisfactorily then i'll OC, right now I happy with the beast as my Daily Driver until i need to put it on the drag strip

nice

I'll test it out for you in the meantime. Lets see what that bad boy can do on a Core 2 Duo 3hz beast of a CPU.

As for gaming on the big screen, it is nice. I've run starcraft 2 on a 52" and it is glorious.

Think about it mez, most console gamers are running CoD, Battlefield , Uncharted 3, you name it....on their big screen HD TV in the living room.

It's hardly a preposterous concept.

Same games we run on the PC.

You can always get a keyboard extension / wireless setup for some distance if you find yourself too close to the screen and having to make out like Stevie Wonder or someone down in pit @ movietowne.

5. change the case to a newer smaller form case.
6. pawn eberyone.

newer, smaller case you say? If you don't want the nuclear reactor that now sits in your room to melt down, ur goin to stay with a mid tower with GREAT airflow eh. One that's going to hide all those cables as well. Better cable management = better airflow = better cooler. Keep that in mind

Check out that ghetto SSD mount.  :laughing7:

Mez, my friend, you need a better case.

Check out Corsair (Graphite), Cooler Master (HAF-922), Antec (902).
You need something with superior airflow to match the pedigree of parts you have now.

Let that be your focus for your next investment.

80C on ah i5 2500k, that's some crazy temps they. Most i does get without AC on and room temp 39-40C is 60-63C while running bf3 and my intel turbo boost on.
Title: Re: Mez 2k12 Rig

Yea, it's because that stock cooler is ballz for suck a beastly cpu and for some reason it was set to Turbo Boost up to 4.6GHz so that resulted in the temps virtue stated.

All safe now as it now off and it may also have to do with not having that extra fan for the airflow I want in my case. Once you know what you want just observe yuh temps as Hard O/C stated.

Shivanandrs: http://3dmark.com/3dmv/3561534

Syncrod: http://3dmark.com/3dmv/3665101

The 2 of them have the same GPU as you, well of course u have the 3gb version. Notice the clocks are different more specifically the core clocks. Yours is running at 772 Mhz opposed to their 900 Mhz.

Well of course they have i7's so that's their trump card over you atm but once u have the cooling, you can break 4.2 Ghz on ur CPU. What i'm getting at is your GPU score should be higher than what it is. Keep in mind though, the higher the clocks on the GPU while under load, the hotter its going to run. Turn your room into an ice box for sage measures lol

So... the issue is a mix of distance/interference and hardware issues. I'm going to suffer through skyrim until I can get the data over power system. *will place order this week when I get the $ to from le Work (y) I know allyuh waiting on the battlefield but .69Mbps eh really BF3 ready. in a timing :D

weak wireless.

wire ftw

or you could move your PC closer to the internet connection within comfortable reach of a cat5e patch cord in the interim if you're truly hard core. lol

Did you try changing the channel your wireless is on though? That should reduce some interference.

loving the score

about the wireless, i would really try using channels 6 or 11

Trials and tribulations.
So in migrating my pc to a new case, and installing a new OD CPU heatsink,
the heatsink was blocking ram slot 1.
so the decision was made to try and remove the heatsink from the ram in slot 1 so that it could fit.
its the corsair vengeance ram, with the big blue heatsink.
so.. in removing the heatspreaders from the ram.. one of the chips was ripped off.
I'm upset ofc, its partly my fault but either way. They are talking about repairing and i'm wondering if to say eff it, get a replacement one.

ouch

that sucks

luckily, ram is cheap. I'd say go for a replacement.

Wouldn't dare do anything so adventurous myself as trying to remove heat spreaders from DDR3 sticks. I'd use the stock cooler on the cpu and leave the ram as is.

Especially with an already over powered rig like yours.

pressure

well i'm going and see if they can have it fixed. If not I'll get a stick to replace them

...which is more than enough mind you, but I know how you're feeling.

Saxman is supposed to have a single Vengeance stick of 4 GB DDR3.  Not sure of the color, or speed though.

And this is why I went for the Vengeance low profile version.  I said it before: those tall heat spreaders are of poor quality!

and yes, I do have a single Blue Vengeance 4GB stick I can sell you (http://www.carigamers.com/cms/forums/index.php/topic,26271.0.html).

You do realize that half the time yo wont use more than 50% of that memory right? 8 gb is more than enough to run any game and with that GPU, your RAM will get little or no load so... 16 gigs of RAM jus bunnin extra electricity for nuttin

Yeah but the e-peen of listing '16 GB RAM' in your system specs cannot be quantified by something as simple as 'money'.  : laughing 7:
