Title: Soca Monarch 2014 Results
Post by: TriniXaeno on March 01, 2014, 08:20:40 AM
International Soca Monarch Results :

1st Machel Montano

2nd 3 way tie Iwer George/Destra/Mr Killer

Groovy Soca Monarch Results:

1st Kerwin DuBois

2nd Machel Montano

3rd Farmer Nappy

4th Destra

So I didn't like "Mor" at first....but it has grown on me. The epic music video Machel dropped on youtube definitely helped. A class production.

Kerwin had a winner on his hands with "Too Real" right out of the gate. Groovy idmc #dazwhawetalkinbout

The controversial dark horse in the race was Ann-G from Japan, in the power category. Many thought she was included for her international flavor. I figured her "We Love Carnival" selection was better suited to the groovy competition. Judge for yourself

Either way, it is good to see that soca continues to influence artistes beyond our shores.

PS...they need to change their judging system....yet another tie laden result. Ridiculous.

I think he spared them in the groovy category.

Because "E.P.I.C" would have been a stronger contender against Kerwin's "Too Real"

I don't think HMA had enough vibes to defend the groovy crown.

lol @ nutsack. Hate all you want man Arc....Machel is a boss.

If the other artistes come good they can meet or defeat him (as proven by Super Blue last year and Kerwin this year)

As I always say... I don't 'hate' the man, but in this country apparently it's a crime to dislike him, as evidenced by your comment.

I can't knock that hustle.  He just collect he yearly salary for less than an hour of on-stage work.

Pretty good hustle I'd say.

Seriously though...

I honestly think that 3-way tie business is utter bollocks.

It's also about damn time Mr. Du Bois got a win. That dude does some good work and I'm nothing short of glad for him.

You do realise that apart from mounting public pressure that Machel is favoured,  super blue manager is a fellow founding member of the soca monarch competition. Don't take a genius to see what play off and btw super didn't beat mm eh they TIE.  I agree with arc is a farce

I said MEET or BEAT.

Specifically referring to the tie achieved by Super Blue

and Kerwin defeated him in groovy. Who is Kerwin's manager?

I'd love to hear who you and arc thought were superior in the power category???

The only person I think who had a chance was Mr. Killa and his delivery on the night was too long winded and not the best.

A shorter, more on point, high impact performance could have nailed it...as was delivered in this video and fetes earlier in the season.

I know it hard to be objective when your upper lip reeks of MMHD juice eh...

It has been demonstrated time and again that the playing field is not level with regard to the spending of contestants, and the cost of their production on the night.   This has been discussed to death before.

One year later, here we are again.
That hype train was so overloaded, it nearly fly off the track.
Everywhere one looked, there were comments to the effect that 'MM goin an win da Power, dan.'

It has been said that he didn't even perform 'at his best', yet he wins again?

...and worse yet, a THREE-WAY tie for 2nd place!?

...but then is Trinidad.  MMHD 'bess' ent?

This 'competition' seems like anything but.
It look like everybody else problem is that they not MM.

Either way, guess what?
*checks price of bodi*
Well look at that...unaffected.

Machel didn't spend any set of money on his performance this year at all. Did you even watch the video???

Very basic stage design. One prop (a 10 ft piece of road) and one lame stunt....(a michael jackson lean)

Like I said, who would you have given the nod  for 1st place over Machel in Power???

This is Trinidad and MMHD is bess. Other artistes have to come real good to beat him, like Kerwin did with "Too Real" in groovy. The man sets a high standard but he is not invulnerable, obviously.

So I don't get where all the hate coming from tbh.

Totally agreed @ the three way tie being rubbish. They need to revamp that judging system. Way too many ties historically.

...and that's my point.

If he spend all da money before, and win, and this time he eh spend much money, and win, what does that say about the judging, and the competition in general.

...and what 'hate' you talking bout?

I am not a fan, but I don't 'hate' the man.
I am just very skeptical of the process that puts him as the winner 3 years in a row.

I would be just as skeptical were it any other artiste...but it seems because MMHD 'bess', no one should question it?  Bollocks.

They should fully publish all the results in the interest of transparency, but we know that will never happen.

....and I watched the ENTIRE thing, from 9pm to about 4am.  Did you?
In my opinion, either Destra or Mr Killa deserved the win.  If Mr Killa got penalized for exceeding his alloted time, then so be it.

That's the "hate" I'm talking bout. (see above)

I'm a big Destra fan ("Bonnie and Clyde" will forever be on my music playlist) but her 2014 offering in "Mash Up" was not strong enough to stop Mr. HD.

And as you already noted Mr. Killa went way overtime on a less than stellar performance.

Speaking of Bonnie and Clyde explain how that didn't win road march?  And as I've said it's not alleged that is rigged eh.  This isn't that cheap sh1ts and giggles site on local TV,  as I've said before I've heard more than once from local artists that they always know who's gonna win before the finals, and that's since before mm steamroller over the 1 million and up prize money.

What I don't understand is why yuh standing up for as arc rightly put same sh1t different year.  Again we doh hate Machel,  I already say he do more for soca than all the others,  what I DON'T like is how the music mafia in this Country keeping other artists down in favor of a specific few.  Can you deny this Tw?

Oh and two more things,  the only person who really could have challenge mm chose not to compete and he has had the biggest songs the last 2 years,  yes that's bunji,  do you suppose that was happenstance he pull out last year and didn't compete this year?  Before you spout blind,  it's not by chance eh,  both him and fayanne boycott ism and that is a KNOWN FACT.  The second thing is mm had to DUMB Down his performance for kb to win,  as you said hardly any props on stage.

Oh and BTW not sure if this is bs by mm but he announce in Jamboree that he retiring from ism to make way for the younger soca artists...  But roadmarch will remain his. They claim road March is the ppl preference but tell me something,  in all the years you play mas they ever ASK what yuh want to hear crossing the stage?  They never asked me once in the almost decade I playing.  #allafarce

This is hate: '...f@#k MMHD, he a cornt'.

Learn the meaning of the word before you throw it around so cavalierly.

Speaking of Bonnie and Clyde explain how that didn't win road march?

It came second. Shurwayne won with "Look de Band Comin"

They both beat Machel that year, who came THIRD with Craziness.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ANClPBhfTg

Unfortunately for Destra, Shurwayne had jump out with an epic tune. Any lesser composition would have been steam rolled by Bonnie and Clyde.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yY8V2EYCbtE

Also, as much as I love Destra, I am the first to admit that "Bonnie and Clyde" was big because of sampling from other popular works. She specifically borrowed heavily from "A Ha - Take On Me"

And you're right, while playing mas I was never consulted for my choice of music while crossing the stage.

That said, if a truck DJ were to play some rubbish because they were "bribed", the masqueraders would certainly protest. Even more so in recent times with social media outlets available to them.

You better give that crowd something proper to hit the stage with else is bacchanal. lol

Thirdly, personally, I give Mr. Killa a better chance at dethroning Machel than Bunji or Fayanne this year.

Don't agree at all with that boycott Bunji conducting on Soca Monarch. I think he should do like Iwer and go in there and take his money (even if its a Tie like his Father in Law achieved, or second place....cause that is still a solid pay out).

He obviously not in it for the money, lol

Was real looking for Jaiga to jump out with My Team this year and he also avoided competition. So I hope Bunji not starting a trend with this boycott nonsense.

Two problems with your argument
1. Any lesser song played on the road would cause the masqueraders to be upset yet Bonnie and Clyde was NOT a lesser song so the crowd would have been very happy all the same.  The same holds true for many other songs like Rolling by Patrice and MM (tho his solo won,  let's ignore that's ALL Harts played crossing the stage cause clearly the other bands did not)

2. Destra song isn't by any measure the only song sampled for soca: Sweat, Defense, One more time all by MM were sample didn't make them any less epic for carnival.

Also yuh still to deny explicitly that there is a music mafia in this sweet Country

I don't think you follow me. I am agreeing with you.

I'm not saying it was a lesser song....I am saying that there are limits to what the crowd will accept as a road march for their stage crossing.

It isn't a failsafe to skullduggery but you not going to hear some groovy chutney rapso collabo bribing its way into the roadmarch winnings.

The crowd response is the litmus test, so while a man could get the nod from a Truck DJ for some $$, his song has to at least be in the runnings.

Looking back at the list of road march winners, they were all very solid. Even Shadow on there with Stranger. Highly doubt he paid for that win tbh.

Nothing wrong with a sample or cover for general air play....it only becomes a big deal when the selection is being submitted to a competition for judging.

You'll notice Machel did not compete with any of his strongly sampled works.

As far as this music mafia....I am not connected with the underbelly of the industry enough to confirm or deny.

There is no accounting for taste, so I don't expect any single judging system to produce results that everyone is happy with, do you? Pretty much every music competition is going to be surrounded with controversy. Especially the ones that allow the public to vote online or via sms submission.

Look @ the chutney soca Monarch this year. Same story.

I totally agree that these things should be more transparent. So we are not divided in that point at all.
