lol...another J-music listener :).

It's cool to find more of you guys around :P.

Largely I listen to the same thing Kaizen does, but with a bit wider scope...so it kinda almost covers most genres out there...

Don't have much j-rock or j-techno though, more j-pop rite now...but hopefully that may change soon :).

I still prefer the music of my youth...70's and 80's!  Most of the 'new' music I enjoy are re-makes of the 'old' stuff.  Although some ppl just massacre a song....bleepin J/Simpson!!
Alyhough I am not opposed to blasting some dub when the need arises!

Post by: Illusion on September 29, 2005, 09:22:14 PM
Honestly have not been listening to music in a while. But I'll give anything a try. From Calypso to soca. From country to  heavy metal, from pop to rap and the conscious music, people like Sizzla, Farmer Nappy and Sean Paul. Love LIL JON.....YEEAAHH...WHHAAT....WHHHAATT!!!... Backstreet Boys lol!!
TECHO is the real Flick
But one thing...I don't like SLOWS. It's just too....slow!!!..lol but don't get me wrong here is some desent slows out there but it have to have a certain beat to get my attention, like Tony Braxton
Like spanish music also like Hulio Eglesias  and many others just I can't think for their names right now.
To tried to think.
Have to sleep, work in the morning.
Later FELLAS

juelz santana has to be one of my fav rap artist, but they held him back too much, try to push ppl like jim jones who don't have the same skills as juelz. that's why i hate mainstream big company labels.

Title: Re: MUSIC
Post by: AIDS on September 30, 2005, 12:25:55 AM
I like almost all type of music except rock. Personally I think that heavy metal is for construction not for my ears but I listen to all other forms of music.

I am currently producing a rap record along with some of my friends but I grew up singing calypso from an early age.

As a producer though I am always looking for new ideas and inspiration so I keep my ears and my mind open.

If anyone would like to hear some of my music I would be happy to send it to you.
Title: Re: MUSIC

whoa

big words and big tunes from ah big ninja, bob sama w00t

I fell outta love with music recently, kinda

I dont follow it anymore, sometimes something reaches my ears and i kinda trance on that one or two songs for a while, then i move on.

Iam currently fixated upon switchfoot and old bush songs that i barely liked before and now cant stop singing.
in particular cold contagious and greedy fly.

Looking into my chemical romance as well.
helena is nice, but i like iam not ok alot more.

For me it's all about the pop-punk/emo. Fall Out Boy, Motion City Soundtrack, My Chemical Romance. Story of the Year. Also Staind, 311, Ra and a few others that I can't remember. More than that, though I'm totally into podcasting. I listen to podcasts more than actual music.

Title: Re: MUSIC
Post by: Trinitus on October 09, 2005, 06:37:54 PM
Atomix MP3 is a good one you could use,  that way you could mix a bunch of tecno, rap rock classical or whatever music you like and make a really long a$$ track, really good program.
Title: Re: MUSIC
Post by: AIDS on October 12, 2005, 09:15:46 AM
Sorry I didn't reply sooner. The progs all have free trails but are pretty expensive.
You get what you pay for though and these progs are all excellent.

Automix is now Virtual Dj.

I don't know about sony Acid pro, I never used it.

Cool Edit is now Adobe Audition.

All the progs I mentioned I currently have available so if you are interested in aquiring them send me a PM and we can organise something.

Also if you know any good music appz that I didn't mention let me know or you can post it in the "software recommendations" thread.

used to listen to conscious etc.. but these days. i fine is real nonsense.. same with slows . soca an r &b

this year soca was an okay crop.. but with regards to the 80s or 90s, this decade is a pale shadow of what it should be

still lookin for  anthony b - 'universal struggle' and 'so much things to say'.. had them when i was in school years ago but lost them  ..

arghhhh!!!

lol. nah empire.. i used to listen to most of the artists you call there..   ( cept, of course, gyptian , and fanton mojah cuz they new, not so?)

as i said, i still lookin for two of anthony b older cds...  but  conscious music after 2000 started to get stagnant for me, with the exception of a couple big tunes....nothing really caught my ear..

perhaps will give new conscious music  a try soon, tho.
thanks for the refs.

Just recently, I was listening to 'The Living Years' by Mike and the Mechanics.
Very powerful song.
The thing that really gets to me about it is the message that you should make peace with the people that matter the most to you in life, because once they're gone, it's too late.

I usually just listen to stuff in de car. Too busy gaming or checking out flicks otherwise to listen any other time. I have my moods. Sometimes it is 80's and 90's rock (Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Guns 'N Roses, etc.). Other times it is commercial stuff (Evanescence, Kelly Clarkson, etc.). I like girls singing more than guys. My favorite music to listen to, though, is trance. I have a good few MP3 cd's worth of trance. Some are just short songs but the best are the hour/2 hour long mixes by DJ's. I like both instrumental and vocal trance but, like I said, a girl's voice just does it for me. For those who like trance or want to hear what it sounds like, be sure to acquire something from the Solar Twins. The singer, Joanna Stevens, has an amazing voice. They did a remake of "Rock the Casbah" for all you 80's fans.

Hell of a lot of metal in this topic... :/

I listen to everything. I will admit though...I'm no great fan of Metal. In general.

I don't like death metal, black metal, prog metal (read: Dream Theater ...I have no idea how such talented artistes can make such souless music), Grindcore, Glam Metal...you get the idea. There are bound to be good artistes in between there but I don't venture too deep into the genre. It's main artistes are boring to me. I'm big on power/symphonic metal though. Dragonforce, Symphony X, Stratovarius, Iced Earth. Yep. Hrm...who else...Marilyn Manson I like. Slipknot....-hate-. And pretty much all of nu-metal.

...but yeah. If I began to list bands I like I'm pretty sure no one would've heard of half of them.

P.S. "Godspeed You!Black Emperor" is the only band worthy of having the word 'god' in its name. They are...seriously. The best f**king band. Ever.

EVER.

(imo obviously)

i First heard metal about 5 years ago when i was 12 years old. In primary school. Mr marilyn manson and i liked it, but not enough then to give up listening to rap music, and about 3 to 4 years after my uncle wanted a rock cd, soo i just searched the heaviest hartist i knew at that time "marilyn manson" LOL which i dont even consider heavy anymore. And from since then it has been a progressive move towards metal and a progressive decline on the rap side. I have alomst 80% given up on listening rap or dancehall and all those other kinds of music. i spend the entire day (once im home) Listening and headbanging to Frozen Black metal from Norway.............i think im in LOVE

The Tekken: Dark Resurrection soundtrack is pretty decent as well. I'd swear the 'Sunrise' track was from Soul Calibur, though, because it has this medieval feel to it.

By the way, odion, I don't suppose you have a full photo of that costume the band member from Burzum (the one with the spiked club) is wearing, do you? It looks awesome.

hmm that cover for some reason reminds me of an episode of tales from teh crypt where this woman was obsessed with making love to zombies. She was young too and then she had a zombie baby for one of them and then she went out and got more zombie lovers. was tres odd... but i couldnt stop watching it. lol.

Umm... hmmm ive kept myself in a sort of musical hiatus purposely,  i only listen to songs that have emotional  meaning to me... sort of self imposed penance.

So i listen to alot of bush, alot of slip and sound track to queen of the damned.
Listen to certain linkin park that alows me to release alot of anguish.
I mean you can scream and make noise to most of the death and black and what ever trite classifications of metal out there but.. few .. oh so few bands and songs. can allow a man to scream in anguish and pain and to find blissfull release, cathartical release in the anguish bound and bled into the music.

Fly leaf has some great songs as well reminscent of how kitty USED to sound *sigh*

any cutters here btw?

well of all time my favorite has to be Nightwish (but since Tarja leave i kinda layoff, they new stuff better be up to mark though)

but right now,

Blind Guardian (love 'And then there was silence'), Epica, Theather of Tragedy, Demons of Wizards (Iced earth and Blind Guardian colaboration) & Visions of Atlantis are some of the bands i listening too. there are other less well know bands but, shamefully i will admit, i can't pronouce there names most are from norway/finland/germany, and have only max 2 albums out but they are really good will try to post there names here as soon as i can.

Speaking of symphonic metal bands, trini eh have nun? since this punk rock thing start to take over i give up on the local scene.

Nightwish...

I'm currently listening to "Somebody Told Me" by the Killers. Very catchy song. Even though I swear it must use the same batch of lyrics over and over again, it still manages to sound very awesome without sounding too repetitive. I think once I get a new CD player, I'll go pick up the 'Hot Fuss' album.

Dark Autumn is an extreme metal band that has been tearing their path through the Carolina region since 2001. They combine the grim atmosphere and tones of black metal with the brutality of death and the melody of folk to create their own breed of visciously addictive music.
KEEP YOUR EYES AND EARS OPEN FOR NEW MATERIAL SOON!

I used to like alot of rap/hip hop but most stuff you hear nowadays is so much crap I fell out of it. And I don't have the will to look up all these supposedly badass 'underground' artistes. I've found I prefer the music to th lyrics in general anyways.

So I listen to alot of metal now. So surprised I have not seen the greatest metal band of all time mentioned: IRON MAIDEN. Seriously, bow down.
So I listen to heavy metal like Maiden, Mastodon, Manowar. Also my fave subgenre is power metal, bands like Blind Guardian, Iced Earth, Kamelot (amazing) and Sonata Arctica.
I never liked death grunts so I was never much into death metal. The one Opeth I listened to left my ears hurting. But then came Metalocalypse and I thought Dethklok was awesome so I decided to look for some melodic death. And so Opeth isn't too bad anyway and I love Amon Amarth now. So much so I made "Cry of the Blackbirds" my ringtone on account of the awesome opening.

Can't stand screeching though so black metal is more or less out.

Oh yeah my fave tracks from the t5 dr ost is the opening resurrection track and the Hall of fate~resurrection track.

Title: Re: MUSIC
Post by: Nephilim on January 31, 2007, 05:27:26 PM
well yes and no, metal had broken off from rock with bands like YES,WHO,Deep Purple and Iron Butterfly (or at least i thinks is iron butterfly :S) in the late '60s, it is only then there was no real genre for it, so it remained in rock, metal is more or less classified by emphasis on the guitars and the heavy vocals or heavy lyrics, thats how bands like zep came into it, their music per say isn't heavy but the lyrics are in your face, Maiden refined power and/or speed metal to an extent.

Really and truly, i hate soca.
I grew up in a more classical approach to carnival, i was the only one in my age group who liked to watch the calypso monarch and the traditional/ole mas, modern carnival culture, or rather pop culture, disgust me.

LOL  ^_^ yeah, my taste in  music has changed drastically since then, now is mostly European and J-rock bands, i like the combination of traditional theater and metal they use (Nightwish, Epica, Haggard), and the sound of the language and the music respectively (Nitemare, Gackt).

Nice. Love Metalocalypse. It was what truly started softening my heart to harsher vocals.
If you like Dethklok, try Amon Amarth. Great band. And a good way to start breaking into death metal.

I don't know...I would gear YES's influencemore towards the progressive genres...and I'd credit most of the influence to metal to just The Who and Black Sabbath. As for Zep...they don't have that typical heavy distortion in their sound...in fact I'm trying to think of a zep track in my head that uses much if any distortion at all. Led Zep's influence and sound is more hard rock, I'd think. Robert Plant probably influences certain metal groups lyrically with his epic fantasy oriented songs and then Led Zepplin's whole aura of mysticism. And well....there's no debating Deep Purple.

Both bands...Sabbath and Zep draw a lot of the guitar ethic from blues, though.

Yeah...and...stuff... whatever...genres suck.
Title: Re: MUSIC
Post by: Nephilim on February 01, 2007, 06:13:53 PM
genres suck.

I AGREE!!!!

Just listen to it if yuh think is sounds good

i mean can you imagine how odd it looks when you have a song like dimmu borgir - perfection or vanity, followed by NAS - one mic, then by Prince - When doves cry?

hmmmm @ YES's influence, and yuh have a point on the progressive rock influence though

For anyone who'd want to know what disciple is talking about with East Hastings...you should look at the movie "28 days later". The lurching, atmospheric dirge at the begining of that film that drenches you in that sense of lonliness is a slightly abridged version of that track. It's an amazing listen on a pair of good headphones.

Also...disciple...if you're looking for another good band like Explosions, look up the band Red Sparowes.

I kinda go for the "clean" rappers like Will-I-Am, Will Smith, Heavy D, US3, Wyclef, etc. I find that the lyrics end up being a bit more creative when every other word doesn't need to be a cuss or sexually explicit. One exception I have to mention is the mash-up album with Jay-Z and Linkin Park. Musically, that is one of the best collaborations I have ever heard.

LOL... but i'm into all genres. Linkin Park's a cool band compared to some others. Even though Tupac was a little vulgar, as Laertes said the msg in his lyrics were very deep. Steups, you think Fiddy's lyrics is on a  par with Tupac's? Oh plz!  Fiddy is a good rapper and all but he's  more diluted, not only him but there are ALOT  of them these days.

I remember the first time I heard Evanescence while watching Daredevil. I think the next day I went out and bought the CD. I think Amy Lee has the best voice I have ever heard. She could even make Alanis Morrisette's songs sound good if she re-did them.

Title: Female Fronted Bands - Gothic Female Vocals
Post by: TheApprentice on March 03, 2007, 10:29:15 PM
Please Note this topic is coming word for word off my forum @ www.MusicspotOnline.com
My forum is basically an entertainment forum (mainly music)... A small but growing community...
Come check us out ;)

But here's the article written by me for all fans of this music type :D

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>.

I personally am intrigued by the female voice especially in the Gothic World of Music...
This post is a tribute to some of my favourite as well as recognition of Many Many other bands that exist but fall to be never known or heard...

I started off with Amy Lee, "Evanescence", and to date they are still my favourite band, my favourite vocal. They also are the most mainstream of the bands to become mentioned..but that doesn't hinder their quality and style of Music I've come to love...

Amy Lee, Evanescence

Eventually came along Lacuna Coil and Christina Scabbia's haunting and mesmerizing Vocals... I'd thank my friends Kill 'em All!!!, Gildae and others for introduncing me to this band. The vocals are top-notch in the competition, the music is a great and more heavy approach to the Female Goth World.
Christina Scabbia, Lacuna Coil

Soon Afterwards, (thanks to youdidthis) I was introduced to the Dutch Goth Band "Within Temptation" and Sharon den Adel's vocals far surpass my expectations of the female voice and have given Amy a run for the top spot... This is a great band and the Highest Recommendation from me if you haven't heard them yet...

Sharon den Adel, Within Temptation

So for a few months now, I have been enjoying particularly Within Temptation and Evanescence's music on my mp3 player...
Until it was decided I should try out some other bands in the same genre.

Nightwish and Tarja Turunen's vocals has recently been added to my music collection but I haven't listened to much but just a few... And I must add what a wonderful band they are! (Its just too sad I took that long to hear them)
Tarja Turunen, Nightwish

After hunting for some similar bands to add to my ever growing love of Gothic Female Fronted Bands with Great Vocals (thats a mouthful..lol)
I found some of the following Bands..I know I will check them out, and If you also love this type of music..you should as well >

1.) Forever Slave
2.) Mortal Love
3.) Stream of Passion
4.) Lullacry
5.) Theatre of Tragedy
6.) Leaves' Eyes
7.) Midnattsol
8.) Penumbra
9.) Mandragora Scream
10.) The Dreamside
11.) After Forever
12.) Xandria
13.) The Crest
14.) Elis
15.) Ambeon
16.) Angel

Note: The Bands Listed are from around the World..So their stuff may be hard to track down...

Some of the best female vocals in the World can be found right in this topic...
Thank you ladies for singing every emotion for us and defining our lives through the power of MUSIC

And by the way...This was Musicspot's 13th Thousandth Article!

As much as all these bands bore me to death (except for Lacuna Coil...who I just -hate-) I'd have to say the most vocally talented out of the bunch is Tarja.

Which is ironic...because although I cannot stand to listen to Tarja's voice, for some odd reason, and Amy's voice is clearly more acessible... Traja has better control, range, pitch than Amy has even on her best day. Easily.

I know Tarja has vocal advantage...
but her style (operaish) is not what I like to listen to daily...

Amy's Voice is more...can;t describe really...
but I prefer it most... also Sharon den Adel's voice...

*sigh*

Pretty much. Black hair, dark makeup, pasty complexions...pretty much staples and all there is to it to be a female lead in a Gothic Rock band.

Now, for those of you who like to listen to music that calms the soul and helps you relax, pay a visit to this site:

http://www.michaelsembello.com

It has a few decent tracks there, at least for somebody who is as much a child of the 80's as I am. 'Jazz Maniac' has a nice, mellow feel to it, whereas tracks like "I believe in You" has a somewhat bouncy, inspirational theme to it. Nowhere close to being as hardcore as the songs we listen to nowadays, but, if you're ever in the mood for something different that really makes you sit down and absorb what's being played, give this site a try.

Also, I'm currently listening to Michael Jackson's 'Human Nature'. Very decent song. I'm very sorry I overlooked it so many times whenever I'm skimming through my music, because it's a very emotional piece (especially towards the very end of the song).

From prince's wiki:

"First Steps 1975–1980

Pepe Willie, husband of Prince's cousin, was an influential presence in Prince’s early career. Willie acted as mentor and manager, along with Husney, for Prince in the Grand Central days, and employed Prince in the studio for his own recordings. In 1977, Willie formed 94 East, a band with Marcy Ingvoldstad and Kristie Lazenberry. In 1977, a producer from New York named Pepe Willie formed a band in Minneapolis called “94 East”. Willie was married to Prince’s cousin, Shantel. 94 East was comprised of a group of singers and musicians which included Andre Cymone and Prince. The band recorded an album entitled, "Minneapolis Genius – The Historic 1977 Recordings." Although it was not a solo album and it wasn’t commercially released until many years later, this was literally Prince’s first professional album. For reasons which have never been disclosed by Prince, he refuses to acknowledges the existence of this album. Even the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame lists his first album as, "For You" -- which was released on April 7, 1978. "For You" was the first album that Prince released on a major record label, Warner Bros. This album had no band on it -- Prince supposedly played all 27 instruments on the album himself. Members of his band, the NPG, however, say that Prince only knows how to play 25 instruments. In 1995, the original recordings with Prince and Cymone were released by Willie as 94 East featuring Prince, Symbolic Beginning."

I don't trust the wiki but exagerrated or not...this encapsulates what the hell I'm saying about prince's technical music ability. He's a monster.

She making money and i aint hatin jus sayin that she isn't all that and she isn't that much of a singer...really i believe that real singers are like more the old school ppl...Galdys Knight, Aretha Franklin, Patti La Belle etc...there are a couple modern singers that are on the right path as well i mean Mariah Carey, talent (in singing not acting) beyond her years, Jessica Simpson as well even tho she is utter hopeless in terms of common sense...

Beyonce can sing..not gonna argue that...but she aint no diva.....she jus a ghetto bird that addicted to the H to da O V....you that fine (as ppl say) and you'd let a man horn youu with fivehead Rihanna....that's real poor conduct...and your big come back is sum song (Ring The Alarm i think its called)..

Well Irreplaceable is the women's anthem lately and i must say i like it alot...cause usually in the club u'll hear ot for about a minute then.....TO THE RIGHT.....mash up the club fine like chilli bibi...i mean i haven't really been takin on the gossip lately but under all she packing his goods and puttin him outside an whatever...

Last i heard was that they were still together so i aint know who she's tryin to fool with the nonsense...of course the is the possibility that i'm wrong...if i am plz let me know

I'm speaking about singing talent and you're speaking about popularity. Different qualifiers entirely. We'd also have to ignore the fact that she won Best Female Pop Vocal Perfromace at the 2007 Grammy's, released an album that just went platinum and the fact that she is widely acknowledged in the industry, as meaningless as that is to me, as having one of the best signing voices out of this new crop.

She's not really gone anywhere. In fact...she'll be around longer than all of them because out of them all she's the only one willing to mature her sound. Her voice just has that sort of longevity.

For power metalheads:
I just got Kamelot's newest offering Ghost Opera last week. Much heavier feel from them and a solid album. Took a few listens to get into it but I'm loving it now. Not as good as The Black Halo, but that's pretty much the greatest power metal album ever.

Edit: Now -> Not

The return of the hard rock; Velvet Revolver's "Libertad" is out and the guns are cocked.

*insert potty humour here*

Now, let me just get it out of the way...it's not nearly as good as Contraband (Which, I thought, was refreshing. If there were ever such a thing as new nostalgia...that album would be it.); lacking that bar-smoking muddiness in the guitars and production and not possessing the same calibre of raw-yet-radio-friendly riffs of it's predecessor, -but-, it's worth more than a listen.  I can be certain that a few of these tracks are going to find their way into the soundtracks of a some generic high-paced Hollywood films because they don't take themselves to seriously; they're very listenable, simple (for want of a better word) compositions.

I'll admit...with few songs that stand out from one another there's little reason to get too excited about it...but it's something to pop into you car stereo on a sunny Sunday afternoon or a soundtrack to self-indulgence. However, I can say this for certain..Slash has outlived the redhead...because he's just as technically proficient as he's always been. Arena rock is in his blood.

Are the 80'sdead? Hell yeah.

It's just that Velvet Revolver are phantoms of that era come to cause sonic havoc in the modern day.

Radiohead's new album "In Rainbows" has been out for approxiamately a month now. I wish I could explain it in terms of the band's progressive sound but you would really have to heard the last six albums to really appreciate where they're at now. It's a fair consolidation of their work with a maturity that shows in their composition; minimalistic traditional instruments that integrate electronica elements to create semi sparse soundscapes lavishly layered. It's a sound that isn't particularly familiar but remains both mainstream and unique.

As is typical of Radiohead, the songs are...especially emotional... with each having it's little nuances in production and composition. You seem to hear something new each listen or appreciate even more what's been done. They possess the hint of a band that is, though serious about making music, isn't serious about the music they make. The band's familiarity really shows. I think this is going to be another one of their influential albums and will set a direction for bands in their genre.

I suggest listenening "Nude","Jigsaw Falling Into Place" and "Weird Fishes/Arpeggi". And if you've never listened to Radiohead before....pick up their third album, OK Computer.

Anyone listen to Muse? If you like Coldplay or is into British rock you'll love them for sure (they're better, FAR BETTER, than Coldplay however.).

Two Albums to get your hands on:
1. Absolution
2. Black Holes And Revelations

Probably their most well known song:
Starlight (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-c94VVU7zc)
Title: Re: MUSIC
Post by: Synchronomyst on February 09, 2008, 10:01:15 PM
They're not "far better"... they're for a different audience. Coldplay leans towards alternative and adult contemporary and Muse have definitive hard rock and metal influences in their music. Yes, they're both very brit-pop but their modes of expression slightly differ. The only thing you can say or consider 'better' is that Matt Bellamy is a better trained instrumentalist...Chris Martin is just a better songwriter, however.

Still...you guys should give them a listen.

Jeff Buckley's album "Grace" would be a good listen for fans of singer/songwriter alternative as well.

^ That part where he holds the scream for about 8 seconds was cool, then after that part his voice sounded a bit higher

actually the scream is clocked in at close to 20 seconds
that was really amazing Chester at his best

Eh it's not bad. The scream is certainly longer than he usually does, but not awe inspiring or anything. The lead singer for Manowar has clocked in screams much higher than those for like 45 seconds in concerts.

It's pretty good given that it's Chester though.

Metallica - One
Hate Eternal - Behold Judas
Anthrax - Safe Home
Slipknot - The Heretic Anthem
Naglfar - The Perpetual Horrors
Satyricon - Mother North

"A Sense of Purpose", the newest album from In Flames has been leaked. Now available at your favourite torrent site.
Some people hate alot on In Flames but I enjoyed the album alot. I like that they kept the rawer vocals a la Come Clarity and brought back a bit mpre more of the older more melodic sound to accompany it.

I think and this is my opinion that you tube is very slack. you can watch anything at any age, and the funny thing is that if there is something with a parental discretion the only ask if you are 18 and why wouldnt the kids lie about it, i just think there could be a better way to secure the things there, though many would lie about their ages too.

with me??

Any kind. I'm somewhat particular to 80's rock and also Metal...to an extent.

I recently listened to some Cradle of Filth the other day....those instrumentals were awesome (namely, "Creatures that Kissed in Cold Mirrors" and "Under Pregnant Skies She Comes Like a Great Leviathan") I'm a stickler for instrumentals, as well, especially those that you'd play when you're meditating (or the type of song you'd hear walking through a graveyard.)

Hmm...perhaps disciple might have some ideas in the graveyard dept...

Otherwise off the top of my head... (and you probably have already heard them, of them or have their music) check out Apocalyptica (http://www.apocalyptica.com/). They're known for instrumental versions of Metallica. If you haven't already, i'd say give them a try.

I've found that a good way to discover good and probably not so well known artists is to lurk on Amazon.com.

Just search through those "similar items" and look for something with a fair amount of 5-star ratings.

A month or two ago I got into 'Progressive' rock by this method. Discovered a group called Porcupine Tree (which I think was formed by a dude from Opeth).
You all should check out their record 'Fear of a Blank Planet' it's only 6 tracks but some of the best stuff I've heard in a while. You've maybe even heard the song 'My Ashes' before. If you like that, check out 'In Absentia' next.

i LOVE the new Nightwish. I went out and bought their album ORIGINAL just to show support for them.
I have been a fan of Nightwish for about 8 years now.....and was VERY mad when i heard what Tarja did to leave the band..TERRIBLE.
i LOVE Anette Olzon. Nightwish has AMPED their music RIGHT up....and i LOVE it.
Tarja was awesome.....and i loved her voice, and it will always be nostalgic....but people the dwell in Nostalgia will NEVER progress......ACCEPT change and UNDERSTAND it.
Anette isnt Tarja....and that is JUST FINE. With the amped up music people say Anette has no projection.......Anette frigging BELTS out the tunes with POWER. It's because Nightwish has gone harder it "seems" like she doesnt project. Love the change...love the new Nightwish
btw......Sharon Den Adel from Within Temptation......BEST FEMALE VOICE.....EVAR!

Nightwish live. (Anette BELTS out at the end. it HAD to be prerecorded because Echo said ALL bands had to perform to prerecorded)

I don't have time to chase music like I use to but I'm feeling Flyleaf/AFI right now. I know they're old news but I like 'em. As for Instrumentals, I'm stuck on Enigma and the 12 Girls Band. 12GB is a Chinese group of Classical instrumentalists that play their interpretation of different songs. I heard their version of "Clocks" by Cold Play and I had an instant eargasm. I was like *monotone* "My God... I must have this."

Seeing as this is not really a music forum, and there isn't enough traffic into the particular topic of music as there is in..oh..say...games, computer hardware/software and/or general tech, it's much more tidy to have just one general purpose music thread

Even if we allowed the metal thread how long before it goes dead or simply falls through the cracks...to then be resurrected by ye local noob who ends up pushing down more active threads just to say 'LOLZ I <3 METALLL !!!ONE111'

It's much better to avoid a mess than to clean one up.

you know, Kull, if you like metal so much there are about a million sites/forums/etc dedicated to it, why the need for the discussion here?
You could jump over to tribal/island or any one of the 'rock' sites that trini's frequent, have a discussion about metal or what ever sub-genres you into and then jump back here for your daily fix of gaming and/or tech...

Win/Win situation no?

OK guys, I've been meaning to just make a lil post a good while now after a friend put me on to this band. I know plenty of you ppl who more into the hard stuff than I am would probably have already heard about them,  but the name of the band is Bullets for my valentine. Real Dread stuff. My favorites are "All these things I hate (revolve around me)" and "Tears don't fall".

The other band that I found today by just surfing was Trivium. They've been around quite a while now, and have even had a cover done by Apocalyptica (A band comprised solely of Cello players, they do their own stuff but are better known for their awesome Covers of already great songs). Have yet to listen to all the stuff I've acquired, but the ones I like so far are "For whom the Bell Tolls" (You have to!) and "Anthem(we are the fire)"

I recommend Eminem's new album "Recovery" very nice emotionally driven album. I'll admit I lost hope in him after "Relapse" but this album is tight

here's the track listing

1.   "Cold Wind Blows"
2.   "Talkin' 2 Myself" (featuring Kobe)
3.   "On Fire"     Denaun Porter
4.   "Won't Back Down" (featuring Pink)
5.   "W.T.P."
6.   "Going Through Changes"
7.   "Not Afraid"
8.   "Seduction"
9.   "No Love" (featuring Lil Wayne)
10.   "Space Bound"
11.   "Cinderella Man"
12.   "25 to Life"
13.   "So Bad"
14.   "Almost Famous"
15.   "Love the Way You Lie" (featuring Rihanna)
16.   "You're Never Over"
17.   "Here We Go" (hidden track)

I'm listing to Seduction over and over...that's the best song to me lol but the whole album's cool

here's the wiki link
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recovery_(Eminem_album) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recovery_(Eminem_album))

Not better than "The Marshall Mathers LP" but ranks alongside "The Eminem Show" and "Slim Shady LP" and better than "Encore"....and like I said previously I won't mention "Relapse" lol

4 stars out of 5

I recommend Eminem's new album "Recovery" very nice emotionally driven album.

Took a listen thru last night. tl;dr: I really liked it.

While the first 5 tracks were good, things really picked up from track 6 onward. Almost every track from there was single worthy IMO. Especially liked how Haddaway's "What is Love" was sampled in track 9 ("No Love"). That's my favorite track so far.

Here's my personal ranking of Em's studio albums:
Marshall Mather's LP
The Eminem Show
Slim Shady LP
Recovery
Encore
Relapse

What do dopamine and music have to do with one another? have a read:
Quote
Turns out that music really is intoxicating, after all
By Matthew Lasar | Last updated about 6 hours ago

An "outburst of the soul," the composer Frederick Delius called music. The sounds associated with the form produce "a kind of pleasure which human nature cannot do without," observed Confucius. It is the art "which is most nigh to tears and memory," noted the writer Oscar Wilde.

It turns out that these guys were more on target than we thought. Our experience of the music we love stimulates the pleasure chemical dopamine in our brain, concludes a new study produced by a slew of scholars at McGill University. The researchers followed the brain patterns of test subjects with MRI imaging, and identified dopamine streaming into the striatum region of their forebrains "at peak emotional arousal during music listening."

Not only that, but the scientists noticed that various parts of the striatum responded to the dopamine rush differently. The caudate was more involved during the expectation of some really nice musical excerpt, and the nucleus accumbens took the lead during "the experience of peak emotional responses to music."

In other words, just the anticipation our favorite passage stimulates the production of dopamine. "Our results help to explain why music is of such high value across all human societies," the writers conclude.

Chills and thrills

To learn more about the music/brain/stimulation process, the McGill researchers followed subjects through the 'chills' or 'musical frisson' response moment. You may have thought that chills were just a subjective concept, but that isn't the case. They involve a "clear and discrete pattern of autonomic nervous system (ANS) arousal," the experimenters say, which facilitate "objective verification through psychophysiological measurements."

Bottom line: the chills moment "can be used to objectively index pleasure." So these scientists rounded up a cohort of people who had a proven record of getting the "verifiable chills" when listening to their favorite songs.

It took a while to find these folks. 217 people responded to an advertisement looking for chill-susceptible music lovers. Each candidate provided ten pieces of instrumental music that set them off in some way. The genres included tango, techno, punk, rock, electronica, jazz, folk, and classical. They then filled out a questionnaire designed to make sure their chills were authentic, and went through a mental illness screening session.

Degrees of pleasure

The process produced a cohort of 10 subjects for the actual experiment, who were scanned over two sessions. The participants listened to music that they experienced as pleasurable or to which they felt neutral. They also kept track of their chills themselves, including the "number of chills, intensity of chills and degree of pleasure experienced from each excerpt."

Nature neuroscience
Meanwhile these frisson seekers were MRI scanned during the listening experience, and images that correlated with chill laden moments were examined.

"We found that hemodynamic activity in the regions showing dopamine release was not constant throughout the [musical] excerpt, but was restricted to moments before and during chills and, critically, was anatomically distinct," the researchers note.

The McGill group says that this experiment is "the first direct evidence that the intense pleasure experienced when listening to music is associated with dopamine activity in the mesolimbic reward system, including both dorsal and ventral striatum."

Thus dopamine "is pivotal for establishing and maintaining behavior," the researchers conclude:

If music-induced emotional states can lead to dopamine release, as our findings indicate, it may begin to explain why musical experiences are so valued. These results further speak to why music can be effectively used in rituals, marketing or film to manipulate hedonic states. Our findings provide neurochemical evidence that intense emotional responses to music involve ancient reward circuitry and serve as a starting point for more detailed investigations of the biological substrates that underlie abstract forms of pleasure.

It also may explain why, as Oscar Wilde suggested, we experience bursts of pleasant recollection while listening to the music that we enjoy. As studies of nicotine use show, the cigarette induced release of dopamine stimulates the remembrance of things past.

Nature Neuroscience, 2010. DOI:  (About DOIs).

Quite a but actually... It would be interesting to see what a Trini brain looks like under an MRI when listening to some Machel carnival monday and tuesday... of course the moving shaking and whining might be a problem and the 'pleasure' responses shown... well you can't 'blame it on the music' alone XD

I already like this more than half of A Thousand Suns already.

http://www.spin.com/articles/linkin-park-open-about-hybrid-vibe-june-album

Quote
For their upcoming release, Linkin Park are switching it up yet again, but not in the way you'd expect for a band that recently blew peoples' expectations wide open. They're celebrating the success of the experiment by embracing their strengths, and mixing what they learned on that sonic walkabout with what the rest of us already know they're good at: heaving guitars, walls of textured electronics, and emotive lyrics that feel both deeply personal and somehow universal.

"On the last two albums," says Bennington, "if someone brought in a song that felt very 'Linkin Park,' we were like, 'Mm, let's move on.' We now know we have the skills and the tools to take those ideas and make them into what we’re actually looking for, as opposed to getting into it and discovering that it just sounds really nü-metal. That's always going to be gross to us, but we can take elements of that and reinvent the vibe, make it now and fresh."

Shinoda and Bennington played five of the new songs for SPIN and sure enough, they felt like an improvement on an old family recipe (albeit one you'd most likely use to piss off the rest of your family). "Lost in the Echo" featured a staccato guitar attack, tribal drums, crystalline keys and some brutal screams, but it also interweaved contemporary sub-bass boom and clangy industrial effects. "In My Remains" is both dark and triumphant, built for an arena at the end of days.

The melancholic "Castle of Glass" offers a steam-engine chug and a mountain of sound while Bennington sings about being but a small crack in the titular edifice, illustrating belonging and futility in the same stroke. On "I'll Be Gone," his metallic vocals come from a character who's either forced or chooses to leave home before the sun comes up. Amidst the lo-bit glitch and seismic stomp comes an unlikely cameo: strings courtesy of Arcade Fire arranger Owen Pallett.

"He's incredible," says Bennington, leaning back against the wall of the studio. "You send him notes and he's immediately like, 'I just sent you the track. Like, five minutes ago. It's done.' "

Last but not least, they cue up their upcoming single, "Burn it Down," a seared but still high-sheen slab of cross-pollinated pop driven by four-on-the-floor pump and the pulse of guitars and synths irreparably fused together. Shinoda delivers his bars with force and finesse, and joins Bennington to sing: "We're building it up to break it back down / We're building it up to burn it back down / We can't wait to burn it to the ground." Are they talking about a relationship? Music? Society?

"Once we start hitting lyrical themes that can whack you from all these different perspectives, we know we’re onto something special," says Bennington. "That’s when the hair starts standing up. We don’t sit down and go, 'People are uneasy about the economy. Let's write about that.' We got a little more poetic, a little more colorful this time. A lot of the songs revolve around people — a drifter, or a soldier returning home, or a child finding his or her place in the family."

"Some of these songs started off really mellow," says Shinoda. "Some sounded very electro, and a few were folk, essentially. It's bizarre to remember that now, hearing what's so clearly a mix of all of our influences. Our tastes have gotten even broader since we started, if you can imagine that. It's like wrangling kittens." Bennington weighs in: "It's also what we've based our career on — that we have a little bit of something for everyone. That's been our little fountain of youth."

Finally a reason to be excited for a new LP album haven't felt this way in a long time.

I already like this more than half of A Thousand Suns already.

http://www.spin.com/articles/linkin-park-open-about-hybrid-vibe-june-album

I gave it a listen through.

First 3 tracks didn't do much for me...including the single Burn it Down. This had me worried, and I was thinking at this point "steups another meh cd from these guys"

BUT from track 4...I'd be lying if I said wasn't captivated from that point, til the end of it. An almost perfect listening experience. THIS is the kind of innovation  I expect from LP, and what I wanted as a fan. Unlike the pretentious album ATS there is a lot to like here.  It's a new sound for them (actually each track has it's own sound)...but good new, not bad new.

This album has restored my faith in LP.

Only 2 tracks I didn't care for Burn It Down (the lead single) and Until it breaks ( idk the 2nd half of that song just contradicts the 1st half, for me anyway).  Overall Living Things as the LP feel to it, long time fans will know what I mean.

Lost in the Echo
- First track is one hell of an album opener and I'd put it up there with Papercut.

In my remains
-  intro reminded me of their Hybrid Theory days, when the 1st verse started i got worried that they put a soft song so early in the line up but once the chorus kicked in it felt like a cross between a MTM/HT song.

Burn it down- didn't care for this, typical poppy flavored lead single. Will only be listening to this rarely.

Lies Greed Misery- I call this one a fan pleaser, ATS meets Meteora.

I'll be gone-  possible my favorite track. The singing reminds of his Dead by sunrise work. Guitar work is reminiscent of Easier to run.

Castle of glass
- now things get interesting, a dark electro rock folk song. Yes they made a folk song that is rocking (2 actually).

Victimized- a wtf song, transitions from electro to hip hop then to punk rock with some hints of thrash metal drums then vice versa.

Roads untraveled- the 2nd folk song, calm and quiet with piano and electro samples for the first half then it finishes as a ballad.

Skin to bone- honestly this made me think of those old school anime (Akira, Ghost in the shell etc.)

Until it breaks- yea this was like an old school hip hop style song  but the last half of the song gets too quiet for a while so it bugs me.

Tinfoil- a 1 min instrumental interlude. Kinda out there.

Powerless- the closer, more in line with pushing me away.

Thats the brief rundown, well intended for LP fans. I have to listen to it more and that being said I've been replaying these tracks ore than anything off their last 2 "meh" albums. This is a PROPER Linkin Park record, weird, unconventional at times, with healthy mixes of all things LP (screaming, singing, rap, hip hop, electro, rock, pop and some new folk elements) all twisted in a way only they could do it. If they continue like this I'll be happy.

7.5 for me.
