Can't wait. They're doing the Dark Knight Returns as well. After Under The Red Hood, I think WB recognizes how much people eat up Batman stories from good comics.

Shame zfs can't be absorbed into windows... that would solve the problem, but MS would NEVER do that...

A friend on mine does the EON storage appliance using zfs. http://eonstorage.blogspot.com/

Really powerful, but Solaris has splintered so badly in its offshoots it hurts small projects. Source just wont compile right. You have the right idea though. Wasn't there a file system advancement planned since vista?
Windows 8 interests me only for the touch support. The interface changes I see as a hindrance.

Other changes I want to see -more efficient tcp stack, more command line tools - grep is available from rktoolkit, but imo, grep, sed, awk, cut etc should have synonymous commands. Cygwin is great but we shouldn't need it. for basic scripting.

Windows 8 sounds like they're adding polish which is fine, but I really want some under the hood changes as well.

So based on what ppl have said so far, FPS==K&M (duh) and EVERYTHING else controller (at least by majority)...

Why limit ourselves to 2 controller schemes? Both pale in comparison to my saitek x52 for IL2, and neither really feel s great for racing.

Hell, a touchscreen helps in several games, console or not.

Should you wish to look at genres, then let's see...
racing - wheel?
fps - k+m
Adventure - k+m/controller - really depends on the game. Point and clickers really translate poorly
RTS - k+m
rpg - depends on build. Active worlds, and in depth action RPGs generally demand a mouse and keyboard.
Simulators - keyboard. When you start running out of keys, there's no substitute. mech warrior 3 - no way i'd get the control I did using a hand held controller.
fighting games - controller sure. I take a different route if is feel - with a keyboard, it's easy to bind any key to a series of key presses.

I don't see controllers in arcades either ('cept guns...) - heck, manufacturers are trying to minimize buttons on general consumer devices to keep costs down. a joystick built like a truck with the value of a pigiron chunk sets the tone for most arcade machines. I've never been able to wring a hadoken properly on those :P

There's a lot more than just the video that will have to change for this.
Consider your own "infrastructure"

1 - Harddrive space. Because we've been stuck at 2TB drives for too long...
2 - Hardware decoding - surely this will need a boost, because at more than 4 times the pixels, 4096x2304 (16x9) will surly kill most video decoding solutions
3 - Videocard - When 1920x1080 monitors hit, drivers pushing this resolution were complete sh!t ;) now we don't just need drivers for this res, but also more power. Can a single card handle 4096x2304? Forget decoding, how about fillrate?
4 - Dual link DVI is needed for today's 30" behemoths pushing 2560x1600 because a single link dvi only handles 1920x1080. We're going to need a new standard for a single link handling over 4 times this bandwidth.
5 - Monitors - the only monitors I know of pushing these resolutions are used in hospitals.
6 - Hollywood/Sony - someone is going to have to bend them over and show them the squirrel, because I'm done with dealing with DRM BS, upgrade this or you can't do that. Install my propietary driver before doing that. Atapi rootkits and the like.

I think people would have been on the HD bandwagon if the transition was smoother. Those with non-HDCP compliant 1080p monitors/TV - I feel for you.

We need companies that stand behind consumers on this bandwagon. And I don't mean those waiting for us to drop the soap.

« on: August 16, 2010, 11:43:43 AM »
Are you saying that Wintel has lifted the limitations imposed on netbooks?
Not exactly - rather it seems some vendors bucked the trend anyway. My HP mini 110xp is over a year old. That came with the 1366x768 res screen - ironically, only the XP model shipped with that. The linux models only offered 1024x600. Ram is upgradable in the HP minis as well, so it's running 2GB.

From May - intel ditching atom screen size restrictions

What do you mean by your eee is sitting in a box?

My two greatest concerns with this platform are RAM and Res.

2GB is the minimum and ????x768 would be preferred. Under $400 and we have a winner. The 10" screen is sufficient.

I get your point about limiting yourself for development. Been updating the GATT site on my desktop, 1920x1200 res with 3ghz dual core and 4gb ram.

One day, at a customers site, I pulled it up on 800x600, what a mess! lol

I've got 2.5 netbooks - one is the HP mini 110xp which has effectively replaced my laptop. The other is an eeepc 900. 9" screen isn't bad, the resolution means a titlebar, toolbar, bookmarks bar and address bar wastes a third of the screen. Plus with the extremely cheap solid state drive they use, I BARELY use this. It's also purple.

If you ARE stuck with an older lower res netbook however, I STRONGLY suggest using Ubuntu. using xrandr, you can "upgrade" to a somewhat decent looking interpolated 1280x800 resolution. While it's may not do justice to small text, it can make a fair difference to usability. NB - issues using this and GMA 500...

The .5 is a fujitsu u820 (5.6" 1280x800) which fits with my lunch for those hour long bus commutes...

I tinker with image processing - prior to using my netbook I was getting "acceptable" processing times with my overclocked core 2 duo desktop. when I moved back to my netbook, I realized it just won't cut it.

For what you're asking, there's the HP mini 210, which comes with a 1366x768 res screen. This also comes with an "upgraded" chipset - the 3150. Which is weaker than the GMA950.
NB - upgrading to 2GB violates some windows agreement they have - so buy your own 2GB stick for less.

Other than this there's gateway's EC14 series

I've actually dumped my dual core turion based MSI notebook in favor of one. I just don't play hard games on it - and trust me when I saw, the resolution really helps. 10" at HD resolutions is extremely comfortable to use. The eee I have running 1024x600 sits in a box. A chip like the atom, only really seems slow for intense processing - video encoding, gimp (or photoshop) work (and not all types either), modern games, compression.

TBH - It's a great platform to limit yourself on for development.

For a while windows and intel pushed manufacturers to gimp netbooks - higher costs of the OS/chips for putting in better hardware - they did this to prevent cannibalizing sales of higher tier products. Sucky resolutions, ram, and slower atom processors.

I'm done with 15". Perhaps it's better to segment this not only by cost, but screensize, as that seems to the the main criterion for subjective comfort.

You'd laugh if you see what I've posted on :P

I understand this is a "dead" thread - but it's also a sticky, and the first thing you'll see coming into this forum. Continued relevancy is implied.

Be warned, this particular model, while having a nice screen and build quality, is prone to overheating, and spectacular crashes. Lenovo repair actually stated this so I got my money back fast.

If you're looking at portable, there's two main chips to look at. CULV Pentium/core cpu (i.e. consumer ultra low voltage) and atom. Atom will grant a longer life, but culv core cpus will get stuff done faster. expect to pay $100 to $150 more for these, or wait for sales.
for $400, http://www.gateway.com/systems/product/529668498.php - based on acer timeline really, these feature dual core core based cpus, and a larger but high res screen. gma 4500 is also a decent chip for this level of mobility.
http://www.hardwarecentral.com/hardwarecentral/reviews/article.php/3854136/Gateway-EC1430u-Review.htm

Also, consider screen resolution. My wife and I both think 1024x600/1024x576 is uncomfortable. It's just too small. Some netbooks will let you upgrade the screen to a 1280x800 or 1366x768 - e.g. HP mini 110.

Memory is another issue - I like having a minimum of 2GB in just about anything. many netbooks are not upgradeable, having memory soldered in  place - e.g. dell mini 10.

There's a few chipsets available to atom.
GMA950(majority) - good enough for minor 3d games, diablo, emulation, little steam games. No video acceleration.
GMA500(pulboso) - horrible xp support. intel had power vr make the chip, and another company did the drivers. Very bad at direct draw and 3d. Good video acceleration though. VLC for example will handle 720p movies easily. e.g.dell mini 12, sony vaio p, fujitsu u820, viliv n5 etc. exemplery battery life.
GN40 - best of both worlds. e.g. asus 1000HE
ion - only in a couple netbooks, sacrificing battery life.

Gimme awesome warrior armor :). An elementalist is the one character i don't have :P Hit me up sometime - Anax Avatar.

It's funny - this game it falling out of it's prime, and after what is it, 4 years? I'm just getting into it hardmode style.

I wonder if some of those scenes are recreations of areas from the first game.

Destroyers with purple highlights? Looks like a destroyer/margonite/mursaat hybrid...

Is there any information on how titles from the first game will affect your character in GW2? Items, text on a wall etc?

Machinarium is just plain awesome. They're selling it for $5 - no drm, so you can back it up wherever.

Mobile Phones & Gadgets / Re: Why I won't buy a Google Android Phone
« on: September 24, 2008, 10:01:18 PM »
Most of that explains why you shouldn't buy that version of android phone, namely that specific HTC model.

The only argument there that really pertains to android, is exchange push support. Other than that, the os/most available software is independent of hardware it's being placed in.

And is multitouch REALLY so necessary on a small device I'd want to prod with my thumb?

Just differentiate between google's android, and the G1. Android stands to become a common platform which can be quite the blessing for the phone industry.

While I DO like occasional long hour raids, Its nicer to run a few quickie missions (still takes 20 mins to a hour really. I quit WOW sometime back. It's reward is debatable, but I felt too generic, and knew where I'd be after slaughtering "that many" creatures for levels.

Haven't tried lotro or eq2. Kinda like the free smaller group model in GW.

Well, I'm one of those guys that played the game with a small group from the start, and now that my other friends seem to have put down the game, I've been trudging through alone. It's not hard, I've taken a new character through the first 3 acts in the last month. It's just not as fun alone.

Don't really care too much for pvp in GW or most games, but I do love pve, cooperating with other players, helping em through areas. Anyone still playing looking to get through missions, cap or just wanna have fun, look me up. - "Anax Avatar".

Power draw affects the choice of power supply and heat management - if both can be done well, turions would be fine - that said, my old turion msi gets hot enough to probably make my having a vasectomy in the future unnecessary, so I also have my doubts.
http://www.umpcportal.com/2008/09/everun-note-full-review/

I don't wanna knock it till I try it. Still the size limits the power of what I'd want to do with it, so I doubt I'd ever need that much oomph in there. $900 is too pricey though :(

DO note - dual core atoms are coming!
before it's stated how useless this may be...

Most power is not lost on the chip - the chipset and peripherals are killing the battery mostly at this point,
The atom's weakness is multitasking - multitasking also sucks on really low res screens usually. Would be interesting to get the skinny on these.

As far as competition, I would consider any mobile that i think earns my money more, thereby having me purchase it over the eeepc 'competition'.

That said, there's some delicious looking pics of the turion equipped everun on umpcportal with a video.

Looks like a ds. Pricey, but packing 1.2dual with decent video. For me, it may be this the 901 or s10. Dying to see a good lenovo s10 review. Going to have to replace my aging laptop soon (physical damage).

true - though It's more interesting for the tech in use. Definitely a thumb board - so possibly better than blackberry, though definitely sux for real typing. some of the other pictures really make me want to see this next to a ds.

Only problem "hampering" atom is the chipset. If they would only get around to it sooner, it would rain further on via's parade. As it stands, It's snappy and low powered, but the chipset's (945g) power consumption isn't low - and may even surpass the chip itself :(

Still, just means there's room for improvement.

Couple more umpc's to throw at you - the Wibrain is prolly known, but in it's current via iteration. Well, here's comes the atom version with much better performance...
http://gizmodo.com/5030593/wibrain-i1-umpc-gets-intel-atom-processor

What's really gotten me into a tizzy is a bit from raon - the everun note.
While atom is chained to a higher-power-than-it-needs-to-be-chipset instead of the x4500 we may die for, turions (yes, this mini runs turion, wear gloves :D) run off AMD's ati 690g chipset, which is enough power for light gaming. i.e. light 3d gaming. This isn't a gaming device in any stretch of imagination -  or is it when you compare it to the ds and psp? Hell, the Wibrain il has the shape for it already!
http://www.crunchgear.com/2008/08/13/the-raon-everun-note-looks-to-be-pretty-powerful/
Just expecting flames to erupt from exhaust ports on this thing though!

Anyone wanna open pandora's box? In trying to get to lower possible power consumption and stripping away complex arrays of transistors, fully RISC type ARM based processors do have an advantage (which is slowly eroding -  wait 4-5 generations for x86 to really get there). TI OMAP3 processors are to run from 600MHz to 800MHz, and features 3d gaphics accelerators for opengl, usb2, etc - all for under a watt! On standby, my omap2 n800 lasts ~10 days, resuming is instant.
Openpandora is your GP2X on steroids. Open platform for development and computing, this DS like system can handle some decent games, while offering the functionality of a umpc.
http://openpandora.org/index.php

Given the gp2x community, I'm expecting tons of emulators, but poor support in a frontend or linux gui. The gp2x was a great system, but hardly robust. It does seem like they're going about pandora in a much more professional way though, and I'd bet Debian gets ported given that they've got quite a few ARM packages available.

why arent people b****** about the fact that america has an executive presidency? and has had one for the past couple hundred years?>

and an executive president is E L E C T E D
so how the hell do you elect a dictator???

Why worry about that when a president can serve only 2 terms? How many have the 2 old farts - Manning/Panday served? There's no chance of a Guyana occurring in the US. Trinidad is right around the corner..
