Peripherals / Re: A mouse by any other manu is just a Mouse
« on: October 21, 2009, 07:40:11 PM »
this is just another flop, most who buy this will end up pluging in back that old $18 MS mouse they where using with there macs

meh, kinda yes kinda no. The MS mice have the advantage in that they supposedly use Windows-Style mouse acceleration, as opposed to the OSX style acceleration used by every other company (logitech, apple, etc). That's a huge deal for me and I would assume most people accustomed to using PC desktops. Enough so I'd genuinely prefer using a $18 MS mouse over my Logitech G5 (and I'd hardly consider the G5 to be a "flop," by anyone's standard).

The multitouch stuff is good though. The mouse would be perfect if apple would just allow Windows-style mouse acceleration on the mac.

NO, because to run that OS properly, you need to be forever tied to the internet, which just isn't possible here in TnT.
Until we can have access to cheap-ass mobile broadband, that's actually consistent...then yeah.

I donno, it might make a good machine to check facebook, myspace etc while in the can. 99% of the people I know with netbooks use it for that purpose anyway.

No viruses, no background apps, faster booting, ARM support, etc. There's promise for this to be excellent OS for a netbook platform.

amazon.com

on a more interesting note

w00t!!!
sony make this happen need da BC for my ps3 an put sum ps2 games on d store too an we good to go

That's nothing to get excited about. All the 80GB PS3's already had emulation of the EE...absolutely nothing new in the article except now it is patented.

It's the other chip that's missing -the GPU - "Graphics Synthesizer" (GS) that killed BC on all the new PS3's. Until there is some news on that, then BC will forever be gone from new PS3s.

Quick chart:
The 20GB and 60GB models had both the PS2's CPU and GPU parts in hardware, so that's why they have near 100% compatibility.
The 80GB model has the PS2's GPU in hardware, but the EE is emulated. 80-90% Compatibility.
All the newer ones lack both parts - 0% compatibility.

News / Re: Passengers asked to balance plane
« on: June 24, 2009, 11:37:41 AM »
The daily-mail article is a bit juicier with the details. No idea if this is accurate, but eh.

Quote
The captain insisted the plane was safe, but some of those waiting to board claim that in-coming passengers, disembarking from the same plane, told them not to get on as it was the worst flight they had ever had.

Dave Charlton, from Blyth, Northumberland, who was due to travel on Sunday's flight with his wife Susan and son Adam, six, was terrified by the look on the faces of tourists getting off the plane.

'People were kissing the ground and putting their hands together like they were praying,' he said. 'There were girls sobbing and children crying.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1194937/Terrified-tourists-boycott-Thomas-Cook-flight-home-told-sit-help-balance-jet.html

That aside, these people shouldn't have been freaking out about the weight balancing. I've been on flights where they've done that (usually on Dash-8's, a la Tobago Express or LIAT), and usually the flight is as smooth as ever.

Handheld Gaming / Re: PSP Go Confirmed!!!
« on: June 05, 2009, 08:20:29 AM »
No handheld should cost more than 200 US. I don't care how powerful it is. I really don't see why Sony spent all this time and money on making a revision to the PSP.

Spend more time with developers and trying to reduce piracy first.

They are taking steps in that direction though. One of the other things they said at the launch was that they're cutting development costs quite heavily, and that they're focusing on smaller, more economical titles for the Go!. That should mean more games, and cheaper games to boot.

http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/02/sony-slashing-psp-development-costs-by-80/

The other thing is that they're moving to digital download as the lead platform. That makes sense, and imo, there's enough potential for PSP/PSN to legitimize and expand the download-games market, the same way ipod/itunes legitimized and expanded the downloaded-music market. The piracy element starts to go away when the costs comes down and the convenience goes up for the legit product.

It's a good move, but I still wait to see how they'll follow through with it. PSN store needs to get more content on there (UMD classics, PSN originals, PSOne stuff) for the system to really make sense. Imagine, right now, you still can't get God-of-War for download on PSN (and that's a first-party, flagship title for the system).

Also, just noticing this, but 16GB internal storage? If the system ends up being ~$100, that makes it, what, $20 more than a 16GB memory stick? If so, really good deal there.

Good highlighting yo. That Liliac PSP looks tight.

I just hope some of those PSP games get put up on PSN for download. Can't remember the last time I actually carried UMDs around.

The article still says they're going to have annual (rushed) releases though. Doesn't matter how good the devs are, if EA keeps putting out unfinished products (like they did with carbon, prostreet, and undercover), then the series is going to end up losing the fanbase soon enough.

FWIW, I bought both Carbon and Undercover for PS3.

As one might expect from the firm whose business model depends, perhaps more than any other, on the free flow of information over the Internet, and its continuing development, Google is a staunch advocate of net neutrality - the proposition that user service providers and backbone carriers must not be permitted to favour any traffic sources, destinations or protocols over any others.

I'll take issue with that statement. Net Neutrality, as it is classical defined, advocates to equal treatment for all sources and all destinations, but doesn't necessarily require equality for all protocols. If you go by the article's (Inquirer's) definition, it would mean all advocates of Net Neutrality would also be against any form of QoS (a situation which is just not the case).

Information is a good thing though. More tools are always welcome.

Just for the record, white phosphorous isn't banned. You're supposed to exercise care when using it around civilians but it isn't banned. The U.S. used it extensively in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Are you disagreeing with the article where it says "Under the Geneva Treaty of 1980, the use of white phosphorous as a weapon is prohibited, however, there is no blanket ban on its use as a smokescreen or for illumination"? I'm not sure what you're getting at with your post.

Also, guardian.co.uk has some scary ass videos about the stuff. The first video is of some kids are playing with a part of the bomb, it's amazingly disturbing. The second video is also just... wow.

Media / Re: Crank 2: high voltage
« on: December 31, 2008, 04:10:07 PM »
Even if this is twice as good as Crank...it'd still be crap.

Crank had it's good points. It was distinctive, innovative and fresh compared too all the other "color by numbers" hollywood stuff that comes out. "Crank" raised the bar artistically, and I would dare say the style was a bigger breakaway from the established order than The Matrix was back in 2000.

Looking forward to this movie. Cult favorite? I can live with that; still rocks.

Thanks to rb for posting the trailer. :)

:(   My AVI files doh work

Curious. AVI files work fine here (if the video codec is Divx/Xvid, and the audio is MP3 or AC3/DD (even 5.1 soundtracks work)).
