I decided to start a more all-encompassing thread than the others already existing, to discuss the various actions taken by the government. At the moment, there are two rather scary things happening.

(1)
For one, we seem to be engaging on a path of mass hangings. The problem in this is that the government seems to be so dead set on merely looking like they're doing something about crime, that they appear willing to defy the rulings of the Privy Council, and also hang those who have been on death row for over 5 years. For the record, a prisoner held on death row for over 5 years is considered to be under inhumane conditions and can no longer be hung.

Now a complication of this for me is that I do not agree with the death penalty. I say it is better to let them rot in prison all the rest of their lives, thinking about what they did and how they lost their chance at a life by killing. I say it is a far greater punishment than kill them and that's that. However, more than that...death by hanging is quite frankly in itself an inhumane method of killing. It is not uncommon to not die upon release of the trap door. Why aren't we using lethal injection instead?

At the end of the day however, this is just my opinion on the death penalty itself, which is not the matter at hand right now. Does the government want to create an international fiasco? It's already got one with the Panday issue. It's been all over the international press, and the UNC is writing to international bodies regarding the entire thing. Not to mention the lack of action on Bakr and now his name has been called in a Florida court of law. Don't we have enough scandals on our hands as it is? This on top of the fact that the death penalty at the end of the day doesn't even deter criminals. I agree with the guy on the news tonight who pointed out that the last thing a person about to kill does is consider the punishment. Talk about trying to divert attention.

(2)
The government wants to increase the budget for the 2004/2005 fiscal year by $3 Billion. Apparently gas prices are good so they say it can be afforded. I have two things to say to this. One, what about saving up for a rainy day? Put it in a fund, don't spend it! We were in a mess during the 80's because of runaway spending during the 70's. Do they not learn from their mistakes? Two, we already have a massive budget of something like $28 Billion. Not a red cent seems to be going to any real use. Why do they need another $3 Billion?

That's all I have to say for now.

Hardware, Tweaking & Networking / TSTT DSL packet loss
« on: April 26, 2005, 03:38:18 PM »
Anyone remember a few months back when occassional packet loss on the DSL system used to be a regular thing? Like every hour or two perhaps your web browser, some chat applications, etc would ping out - although you were still connected - and then it would come back up normal again?

Well, it's been happening to me again over the past few days...wondering if anyone else is experiencing this lately, or know of anyone else having the problem. TSTT says they aren't having any problems, and want to go so far as having their server guys monitor my connection...which to be honest I'm not too keen on, although I'm sure all they'll be seeing is bandwidth to my modem rather than all my data, heh.

Interesting point to note: TSTT's site remains available during these outages.

PC Gaming / Vendetta Online
« on: February 27, 2005, 04:10:53 PM »
So I downloaded this game last night...it's 110MB plus another 6MB for the latest update before you can play. Took about an hour on TSTT DSL.

Vendetta Online is one of those massively multiplayer games. It's a space simulator, and you earn your way along by belonging to one of three factions. You might make your living by freighting cargo, trading on your own, mining asteroids or even being a bounty hunter. The game is supposed to be largely unfinished as of yet, although IMO it's pretty solid and fun as it is, they'll just keep adding things in as time goes by.

Don't judge the game by X-Play's review, you know how they like to go overboard on the bashing. It may still be in the works, but it's still a blast. Maybe it's not a fast paced dogfighter - although you can get involved in dogifghts - but it sure is a lot of fun anyway.

The controls take getting used to with the keyboard, but they're not bad. Graphics seem nice, although I don't have a high end machine(you know how fast these things go outdated) so I'm running on defaults.

The bad news is that you only get an 8 hour trial - which I believe applies for 1 month. After that it costs $10 USD a month play. Personally, I'm on my 3rd hour of the trial and I may yet consider paying for a month or two in the holidays sometimes...it's a fun game.

Give it a whirl...it's a nice game, and even if it is only 8 hours...it only takes an hour to download and about 5 mins to download and install the update after if you're on DSL.

Media / Phantom of the Opera
« on: January 11, 2005, 12:53:57 PM »
So when I go Movie Towne these days I'm seeing the trailer for Phantom of the Opera. It's looking like a real wicked movie...the atmosphere, directing etc just looks very well done. What do you think of it? I think I'll definately be checking this out.

Okay so I ran across this very cool piece of software yesterday - one that generates photo-realistic terrains. Upon reaching home today, I downloaded it. Gave it a spin. Here's my first rendering:

The site itself is at http://www.planetside.co.uk/terragen if you're interested. There's some nice high quality renders there to check out too...must...fiddle...with...terragen...more...

Looking good! I'll try to post up the map soon. Additionally, I've closed the old thread as this one can have the playlist in the first post, but it makes no sense having 2 threads for the same thing. Discuss anything to do with AC7 here.

Hardware, Tweaking & Networking / Hard drive prices
« on: September 30, 2003, 06:33:23 PM »
Hey guys, well bad news - the hard drive in my main computer, Akira, died today...R.I.P. Its time was short lived, only about a year, roughly. However, here's the deal. I can't afford to spend a lot of money on fixing this thing, so I need to know what computer places have good, new hard drives for good prices around the Port of Spain area. Looking for a 60 or 80GB drive, 7200 RPM. I know The Wizz, but they're overpriced to be honest and I'd rather not have to go there.

Anime / Anime City 7: Extreme

Anime City 7: Etreme

Date: Saturday 22nd November 2003
Time: 7AM - 9PM
Location: Bishops/Trinity Campus East

Goodbye to the cramped Centre of Excellence venue, hello to the old spacious AC4 venue. There will be 7 screens as well as the last Yu-Gi-Oh! Tournament at Anime City. In other words, there won't be one at AC8. I'm not sure what other new additions there will be, although it would be nice to have a place where people can showcase their own manga drawings and the like, as well as a discussion forum, although those things are probably just wishful thinking. It would also be good if the AMV (Anime Music Video) competition returns.

Anyway, discuss AC7 here.

Software, Security, Programming and Internet / The PHP thread
« on: September 21, 2003, 02:14:23 PM »
We all know how important PHP is these days in web design. From simple PHP includes to forums, PHP is becoming more and more important. Hopefully, some of us can share information here. Anything from useful tidbits of code to how-to's would be well at home in this thread, so post away people!
