Media / Re: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Granted, the beginning went by very quickly, and there were a lot of cuts...but well and truly, the important stuff is all in there. It is virtually impossible to directly translate the book into film...it would be far too long, drawn out and quite frankly boring, as situations come off differently on paper and on screen. The film, no matter how faithful it is intended to be, should always be seen as an adaption...based on to book, but not a replica of the book.

The film showed the characters growing up, and it served its purpose to show that Voldemort is in fact back, the dark times have fallen and nothing will remain the same anymore.

Yuh know, I see this ting 3 times now. I don't have much to say, other than while it does have its shortfalls, this is easily the best film of the bunch and is a must see.

Hardware, Tweaking & Networking / Re: Uncapping TSTT DSL?
« on: November 14, 2005, 01:11:07 PM »
People don't pay for 128k anymore, the DSL service begins at 256 now. A few select customers have apparently been getting their 512 speeds, and I'm sure the odd one knows someone inside TSTT to give them a full 1mbit connection.

There is nothing you can do to "overclock" your modem. The cap isn't set inside your modem, it's set on TSTT's side of things.

Too often. I always feel like I have to put too much pressure to get them in...and then part of my mind is saying over and over, it's an electronic device, don't rough it up too much...the flexible chip sounds very good, but surely there's some sort of disadvantage to it?

if intel takes over the market we'll be stuck with expensive , slow gaming pcs ..... Competition is good...
Also intel is working with microsoft to put in hardware that blocks illegal activity eg. mp3 downloads , burning copyrighted dvds... we need AMD to provide an alternative to the evil .

The same would happen if AMD takes over the market, bear that in mind...you need both to have that good competition. Anyway, what I was posting is you really can't fault them for putting in hardware trying to block illegal activity...after all, it IS illegal. Yes, people pirate like crazy because of the too-high prices...but. Why are the prices as high as they are in the first place? The more people pirate, the higher the prices will go up. Without trying to sound like I'm defending these corporations high pricing strategies...in a sense we've dug our own grave with a mentality to just download whatever we want instead of even considering buying it in a store.

I haven't heard anything from Fiberline(cable) recently nah. We had a 256k line from them at my old workplace and it was real pressure. Always dying. Plus forget gaming - like GreenDot, Fiberline uses a satellite uplink for its backbone connection to the internet. Satellite equals high latency.

I never downloaded a gig at one shot, but the math shouldn't be hard to work out - I'm pretty sure you'll be able to complete your gig worth of data overnight once going at full speed. ;)

The 256k dsl will give you a 32k/s transfer rate. Browsing is very fast, downloading an average mp3 will take maybe 2-3 mins and a standard divx/xvid encoded anime episode will come through in 2 to 3 hours if you can sustain good speed throughout. Using p2p applications, don't expect to max out the transfer rate unless it's a popular mp3 on limewire.

See even Grenada roll out a better ting than us.

Digicel isn't competing in the internet market, Kaizen. And if they decided to, rest assured they will have the bandwidth to offer faster than 256. I guess they decided the other existing ISP's can't offer 512(yeah right) and decided to block the upgrade. Of course it can't last forever, but I dunno how long it'll take now. We were supposed to be on 512 about a month or two now already if I'm not mistaken.

Didn't those asswipes in at the regulatory commission block TSTT from going 512 because it would be "unfair competition"?

Anyway, it's $400(plus vat) for ADSL, if you take the 3 year contract it's $340.

CDMA...sounds like they trying to get a head start on LaqTel.

Regarding the high speed wireless - good news, very good news...but it's not like we didn't have wireless before. Satellite backbone is why the existing providers fall short of the mark; TSTT has full control over Trinidad's undersea cables. So while I welcome the advancement, I also say it real sucks that TSTT continues to have the capacity to push out these new services simply because their monopoly setup makes it impossible for other providers to have the kind of backbone they do.

Politics & Soap Box Rants / Re: The 2005-2006 Budget....
« on: October 06, 2005, 01:13:31 PM »
It is still very foolish to rely on just one industry, especially when you have so many others that can be developed.

And let's face it - even though LNG may be more stable than oil, it's not as profitable, and it's still an exhaustable resource. Not to mention that we still would not have the amount of dollars flowing in, because we are in the middle of a boom, and all booms come to an end. You won't find LNG selling the way oil is right now anytime soon. For that matter, you won't see oil selling the way it is now anytime soon again either.

The government policy can change overnight, except that by that time the damage has already been done. Do not forget the pickle we found ourselves in during the late 80's. We were foolish enough to rely on oil dollars and spend it like crazy without looking toward the future. By the time it was over we had high unemployment, high inflation and a devalued dollar.

They also left out a major issue. Aside from them only being concerned about the next 30 years that we will not have oil shortages, they are not considering the collapse of the oil industry!

Sure, the industry won't just get up one morning and collapse, but it will not always be as profitable as it is today. We are at or almost at $70 US per barrel oil price now, 80's expected next year. After 90, alternative energy sources become economical. So fact #1 is that the oil industry won't let prices get that high. They'll start curbing it back down. Fact #2 is that the biggest reason oil is so expensive today lies between:
1) Middle East instability due to Iraq invasion,
2) The Chinese and Indian economies experiencing rapid growth, and more recently
3) The crippling of the US Gulf Coast oil production by Hurricane Katrina

This boom of ours will end within the next 5 or so years. After that, it's back to regular oil prices from the late 90's.

It is extremely short sighted and foolish to believe that we are riding a 30 year oil boom.

None of us here are past retirement age. The inflation and collapse of the oil market will hit well within our working lifetimes, and long before retirement. And after inflation, current retirement funds won't cut it anyway. Drop in living standards is a big issue after retirement.

Remember the IMF warning. If we don't watch our spending, T&T will be bankrupt by 2020. Some vision...

If you feel GreenDot buss...wait till you try Fiberline! I used it for several months at my old workplace. Slow like a snail on tar and dies on a daily basis. Every day I gettin call "Why can't I get online?" "Why I cyar check my email?"

Hopefully GreenDot just going through a bad phase and just need a land line or something to supplement that satellite backbone. But for now I'm not sure what you can do. You can try Cariblink's Proximity@Home wireless dsl but to my understanding that service kinda buss.

Harrass TSTT more for their DSL. Tell them to send somebody over and check it manually. I was originally told I was too far from the Diego exchange to get it. Then I found out about somebody not too far from me having it, we pester them to come and check it again. I on the service a good while now and it working good.

The time is now to start investing and putting that extra money away for a rainy day. That rainy day may not be so far off anymore.

Now is not the time to squander the extra dollars we will have in our hands. Anything important to a comfortable lifestyle(if your car old, house needs fixing, have a mortgage to pay off, whatever), now is the time to do it...but don't go overboard just because you have the money now. Any extra should be saved and invested...because in the coming years those dollars may not be so easy to come by.

That's the point. The poor weren't paying tax on their salary before the increase to $60,000. They weren't paying taxes when it was $25,000 because they weren't making enough to hit above that figure to begin with.

So when inflation hits, they'll be suffering even more than they are now. This is why we can't just let inflation skyrocket just because we can afford to give the middle class a tax break they weren't getting before. It's the poor people who have to pay for this the most. Poor people who were qualifying for the tax break before the change, and before the now-inevitable inflation.

Free tertiary education is all well and good, except:
1) You need to have suitable work experience or secodnary school passes to get in to begin with
2) With the UTT campus still unfinished and UWI already operating at a higher than optimum capacity, we can't place everybody who is eligible
3) Having graduated, there are not sufficient job opportunites for them all yet

We already have people with degrees working for less than $5000 a month. Free education is welcome, but it's also an error to believe that we have the capacity to handle it. There's a reason free education was originally set for 2008; it was to ensure there were sufficient school places when they applied and job opportunities by the time they graduate.

Giving the extra spending money isn't that great of a problem; it's not having a mechanism to reabsorb it. Personally, I'd rather the extra money go into the stabilization and heritage funds, so we don't end up in the bind we were in after the 70's boom ended.

I found it was good enough to be enjoyable for a watch. As far as animation goes, it's nice to look at. It's nothing special if you ask me, but I also say it was worth taking in, even just once.
