Taking a moment to recognize and appreciate Fathers, particularly  the Gamer Dads out there doing double duty as a parent and a gaming mentor to the next generation of GATTers.

Men like Arcman, Netizen, AK, CaptainAwesome (though he still denies it), Mengsk, RT, Messiaah, Barret, Shaolin and many more.

Hats off to you for teaching the young ones the art of the Suhuweat!!!!!!!!!
(even if their noob antics cost you a win or two along the way)

Software, Security, Programming and Internet / Ubuntu Misadventures
« on: June 14, 2013, 08:22:58 AM »

Ubuntu is an excellent, free linux based operating system.

A viable alternative to Windows that doesn't cost a penny.

However, due to its linux heritage, many are wary of it being complex and difficult to use.

Huge strides have been made over the years to present a simple, user friendly interface to placate those concerns.

As of the most recent version, 13.04, I can confirm that for average use, Ubuntu is as easy, if not easier to use than Windows 8.

It comes with a built in App Store, as is fashionable these days....for finding and downloading new applications. Comes standard with the Firefox web browser and an office suite with requisite word processor, spreadsheet, presentation software, etc...

Everything you need to get to work or play out of the box.

All is not peaches and cream though (as the topic title hints). Some of the complexity users fear does crop up now and then. Often requiring a dive to the command line to execute convoluted commands to repair and troubleshoot.

I had been using the opensource OS without much issue all the way through 12.04

However, after attempting to update three of my Ubuntu machines (A desktop and two laptops) to 13.04, I ran into all sorts of trouble.

Nothing short of a nightmare.

The updates gave endless errors. Never completed without incident via the graphical user interface.

After many command line antics to force the updates to complete (by disabling PPAs and selecting only Canonical repositories) I was finally greeted with the new 13.04 OS.

Only to find that upon login, the dashboard was gone. Just a blank screen with no icons or anything.

Again, via command line antics....I was able to create a new user and voila....all was well in the world.

This was on my desktop, which serves as our Home Theatre PC (HTPC)

The fun did not end on the laptops.

After the updates, they refused to boot. A black screen with a blinking cursur at the top left was as far as Ubuntu would go. No bluescreen. No cursive error message. Nothing.

Just a blinking cursur.

After a lot of research, the solution appeared to be setting a boot modifier command, namely "nomodeset" using the Linux boot loader called Grub.

That worked and all appeared right in the world again. Or so I thought. Turns out, nomodeset is the linux equivalent to "VGA mode".

You get very basic graphics performance and low resolutions.

So playing videos became a slideshow affair as was navigating around the GUI.

WTF happened (frustration began setting in at this stage, you could probably tell)

Apparently, the latest proprietary AMD Catalyst driver version 12.9 cannot be used with Ubuntu 12.10 and up if you have older AMD graphics cards. Particularly the AMD Radeon HD 2xxx-4xxx series.

My laptop had one of those.

Drivers for these cards are now available in a separate branch called legacy series. Unfortunately these legacy drivers (version 12.6) have not been updated to work with Ubuntu 12.10 and up. Ubuntu 12.10 and greater comes with xorg 1.13 while these drivers have support for older xorg 1.12.

So if you want to install these drivers in Ubuntu 12.10, you have to downgrade to xorg 1.12

Yes, more command line action.

After many hours typing in text commands Ubuntu 13.04 finally booted with fast graphics in place.

All was right in the world. Or so I thought.

Now while everything was quick and responsive with the accelerated ATI legacy drivers, the graphics became corrupted and once again, the dashboard and icons went missing.

Adding a new user via command line (which was the simple workaround the last time) did not fix the problem.

As a last draw, I am going to try an old version of Ubuntu, before all the shenanigans began.

A crying shame for an OS that has otherwise been "old faithful" these past few years.

Though many online claim the fault lies at the hands of ATI for not providing good driver support, at the end of the day, the end users and tech support folks like myself are the ones stuck with a hosed Ubuntu operating system.

More could be done to say....warn users with old ATI graphics cards that updating to the newer version of Ubuntu would FUBAR your system, cost you grey hairs and hours of your life that you will never get back.

XBMC Ubuntu (which is a great HTPC variant of the operating system designed to automatically run XBMC media center software after start up) have a glaring warning about the change on their website. Highlighted below. This sort of information should be integrated into the update / upgrade process.

No matter where the blame falls ultimately, it was a harrowing experience that leaves a veteran PC user like myself a bit jaded.

General Gaming & System Wars / Free2Play: Gaming Boon or Bane?
« on: June 12, 2013, 10:56:48 AM »
Free2Play has been the modus for MOBAs (Dota 2, LoL etc..), Flash Games and struggling MMOs for years.

Now we are seeing this model crop up in unusual places.

Fighting Games:Killer Instinct Free2Play, Tekken Revolution Free2Play

FPS /Third Person shooters (Team Fortress 2, BlackLight Retribution, Hawken, Battlefield Play4Free which SUCKS! Tribes Ascend, Planet Side 2, Warframe )

RTS  Games (Command and Conquer Generals 2, Starcraft 2, Diablo 3, Air Mech)

Note, these aren't crappy half rated titles. Some top of the line IPs are heading to the Free2Play block.

It is especially interesting in the fighter genre.

Gone are the days of slaving over the single player story line to "unlock" a character....they give you one to start and charge say US$5.00 for each additional.

I'm a little stoked.

I can literally pay nothing for Tekken, cept maybe $10 to get Bruce and Devil Jin (my two main character) so that is a serious savings over the regular $59.99 price tag.

However, for gamers who play the full gamut of characters available, they will be staring down the barrel of a $250 expenditure to unlock all.

That said, I'm certain they will offer a bundle package where you can unlock the full cast for a special price...something close to the original $59.99

Which would be a best of the both worlds proposition.

Thoughts? Step in the right direction?

Or is Free2Play going to just be a corporate ploy to suck even more dollars out of our wallets.

As it stands right now, in 2013 you literally don't have to pay a red cent to have your fill of a pretty top notch gaming experience.

I am scared.....this looks like an awesome futuristic battlefield type game....like BF2142 (my secret love)

On the other hand, it is also tied into a TV series on the SyFy network coming this April.

Could either be epic beyond epic or a colossal flop.

Here is hoping for the former.

Media / Soca Monarch 2013 Results
« on: February 09, 2013, 04:54:33 PM »

Play Whe International Power Soca Monarch
1. Austin "SuperBlue" Lyons
1. Machel Montano
3. Rodney "Benjai" Le Blanc

Digicel International Groovy Soca Monarch
1. Machel Montano
2. Neil "Iwer" Goerge
3. Dexter "Blaxx" Stewart.

Epic battle between Super Blue and Machel.

Hard one to call but personally, I'll give the nod to the Fantastic Friday. Epic epic tune. Machel's performance was outstanding but there was just so much momentum behind Blue Boy. Anything but a first place would have been pandemonium in the land.

Not tolerating any tie for the road march though....Fantastic Friday all the way!

Hardware, Tweaking & Networking / Razer Edge: Gaming PC meets Tablet
« on: January 12, 2013, 06:39:52 PM »
Much has been said about the future of gaming on this forum.

Mobile (Tablets and Smart Phones) have been heralded by some as the next step. The next evolution.

Razer, a company that is no stranger to the gaming industry, has bridged the gap with their EDGE.

CNET has seen fit to bestow the title "Best of CES" on the EDGE

http://ces.cnet.com/8301-34437_1-57563306/best-of-ces-2013-razer-edge/

No small praise.

The device isn't cheap but judging from the review, it is worth every penny.

As always with Razer's cutting edge releases, the good news is that we should see more and more convergence type products like these in the future.

Media / Resident Evil: Damnation
« on: January 08, 2013, 01:30:04 AM »
Aka Biohazard: Damnation.

This CGI outing is the sequel to Resident Evil: Degeneration and stars Leon.

Just took it in. Very decent attempt.

I'll give it a 6.5 crushed BOWs out of 10

It is amazing what CGI is capable of nowadays. A few more years and we won't need actors any more. Just voice work.

Media / Mass Effect: Paragon Lost
« on: January 03, 2013, 10:06:47 PM »
No, this isn't some new DLC nor a new installment in the Mass Effect universe.

No sir, this is a goodness to gracious Anime movie based on everyone's favourite sci fi epic.

Talk about a late Christmas gift.

Two words of caution.

1) If you played Mass Effect 3, you will already know the story as this takes place right after the events of Mass Effect 2. Still, it is a good watch for fans regardless.

2) The animation style is OLD. It looks like the original GI Joe, Thundercats or Voltron. Even the 3D bits look old. They didn't roll out the top CGI computers and animators for this one. Strange, considering how much of an HD affair the Mass Effect games are. You'd think the franchise holders would try to keep a similar polish with their movie attempt.

A biotic named Essex completely stole the spotlight from the lead character imo. Couldn't get enough of him on screen. What an ass.

The Krogan's were very very well done.

Ending was a bit over done but you definitely got the point. The very essence of Mass Effect. Opportunity Cost, big time.

A solid 7 abducted colonists out of 10

Mobile Phones & Gadgets / Android how Epic are thee? Let me count the ways
« on: December 14, 2012, 11:48:17 PM »
As the title says, this will be a running account of the epic things we can now accomplish with our Android smartphones.

As of today, running Android 4.2, the device is extremely capable. Converging an astonishing number of functions into a small consumer handset.

We are definitely closing in on the "One Ring" of mobile phones.

(This list will continuously be updated as more apps become available and android itself matures)

Let me start the ball rolling.

#1) Wireless Router

That's right, at the press of a button, your Android smartphone can become a wireless router and act as a hot spot. Providing internet access for other devices (laptops, tablets, other smartphones, etc...)

This feature is especially potent when married with 4G internet on your Android device.

Who wants to take a crack at number 2?

For reference, one new 250GB SATA drive goes for about US$70 - 80 on Amazon. That's right, one drive.

But wait....there's more.

You also get this handy hard drive storage unit. Great for transporting multiple drives at once safely. (See attached picture)

Today, with the launch of this, the Official "Rate Last Game Completed" thread, an endeavor is put forth to finish the fight. To run through as many of the titles owned in your steam inventory or otherwise (Origin, Amazon Digital, Battlenet, Apple Store, Android PlayStore, XBOX live, PSN, Nintendo's Network, etc.....)

Premise is simple.

Complete the game.

Post your rating here (Out of 10) with a few lines.

My gaming collection is huge. Humongous even. Conversely the list of games I've completed (especially of recent) is small.

Embarrassingly so.

For the burgeoning digital stockpile, I blame those epic Steam sales and Berserk's uncanny ability to keep us all abreast of same.

For the languishing completion list, I blame Dota 2.

That game single-handedly monopolized 99% of my gaming time.

No more!

Let me offer the first rating:

Halo 4

Rating 10/10

Absolute blast. Non stop action, epic storyline. Immersed myself in the Halo lore before starting this and it did not disappoint. The game was relatively short...about 6 - 8 hours to complete but what they lacked in longevity they made up for in quality. Amazing the kind of graphics the aging xbox 360 is still capable of.

Halo 4 doesn't stray too far from the winning formula of its predecessors and being a fan of them all....that's not a complaint. Played this through with a XIM Edge (keyboard & mouse adapter). Worked smooth and without a hitch. Can't wait for Halo 5 on the Xbox 720. Sold.
