News / Bandits posing as interested clients for classified ads
« on: May 29, 2009, 08:32:40 AM »

BEWARE of that classified advertisement you may be responding to, it may lead straight to a robbery.

In the past two weeks, at least three people have fallen victim to a group of bandits who posed as a landlord for apartments along the East-West corridor.

The Express classified department yesterday confirmed it had received reports from people responding to advertisements which led to bandits who robbed them of cash.

One of the victims, speaking to the Express under the condition of anonymity, said she responded to an ad concerning an apartment in Barataria, expecting to find an affordable dwelling, instead three armed bandits relieved her of $3,000.

She stated a University of the West Indies student who also responded to the post was robbed of $2,600.

Last year, the scam, then perpetuated through car sales and escort services, lured three Tobagonian youngsters, Elroy Quashie, 17, Hensyl Collette, 27, and Clint Ambrose, 25, to their deaths while several others were robbed of cash.

In a reverse of a scam, a businessman was robbed of a laptop and a webcam by a pretend customer to one of his classified advertisements in Grand Bazaar, Valsayn, in October last year.

oddly enough, was speaking to a friend of mine, and she told me an interesting story.. she was selling a ps3 a couple weeks aback, and put an ad in the papers. this guy said he would buy it , and came to her apt , ith his g/f.
while she was makin out the bill, the g/f GRABS the ps3 and jumps into the car, and they sped off..

i don't think we have anything to worry about with our trading zone.. but for those of us who use the classifieds in the papers, be very careful, as the article says

These were the flirt, the gossip, fun lover, wallflower, the ice-queen, the playboy, Jack-the-lad and browbeater.

A man threatening to commit suicide by jumping from a Chinese bridge was approached by a passer-by who shoved him over the edge, local media say.

Lai Jiansheng, 66, said he was fed up with the desperate man's "selfish activity" which caused huge traffic jams in Guangzhou, southern China.

Chen Fuchao fell 26ft (8m) on to an air cushion and is recovering in hospital, the official Xinhua news agency said.He told police he wanted to kill himself because he was 2m yuan ($293,000 or £184,000) in debt following a failed construction project, the China Daily reported.

Traffic around the bridge was stopped for five hours while officers tried to coax Mr Chen to safety.
Retired soldier Mr Lai at first volunteered to try to talk Mr Chen down but was turned away by police, Xinhua said.

Mr Lai is said to have then broken through the police cordon, climbed to where Mr Chen sat, greeted him with a handshake - and then pushed him off the edge

Six crew members held hostage by the man were released unharmed.

More than 150 passengers were on board when the man forced his way onto the Canada-bound plane demanding passage to Cuba, but were released within hours.

Russell Nigel Latapy gets the chance to inject his magic into the remainder of the Soca Warriors’ effort in the 2010 South Africa World Cup qualifying campaign having been named interim head coach yesterday. The appointment of the 40-year-old “Little Magician” as Latapy is fondly nicknamed, comes in the wake of the resignation of Colombia-born national coach, Francisco Maturana.

Maturana and his technical staff handed in their resignations at a T&T Football Federation (T&TFF) emergency technical meeting chaired by T&TFF special advisor, Jack Warner, yesterday at his Concacaf, Port-of-Spain, office. The offer by Maturana to resign stemmed from differences of opinion regarding the way forward in the Fifa 2010 World Cup Qualification campaign for South Africa.

Yugoslav-born Zoran Vranes, current coach of this country’s Under-20 team which has qualified to compete at the Fifa Under-20 World Cup between September 24 and October 16 has been named as Latapy’s assistant. T&T will next face Costa Rica on June 6 at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo and meets Mexico four days later. The 55-year-old Vranes is no stranger to coaching in T&T having first coached the national team f

Edward Richardson, 41, stabbed wife Sarah, 26, to death in a "frenzied and brutal" attack at her parents' home in Biddulph, central England, last May after she altered her profile on the Internet social networking site.

The couple had been living apart since the previous month, said Fiona Cortese, a spokeswoman for the Crown Prosecution Service, which is responsible for prosecuting cases in England and Wales.

"Richardson became enraged when Sarah changed her marital status on Facebook to single and decided to go and see her as she was not responding to his (text) messages," Cortese said.

"He gained entry by breaking the front door window and made his way into the property.

"Once inside, he found Sarah in her bedroom and subjected her to a frenzied and brutal attack with a knife and then attempted to take his own life."

Two Japanese companies have unveiled a security robot that can be commanded from a mobile phone to hurl a net that traps suspected intruders.

The prototype T-34 was developed jointly by robot firm Tmsuk Co and security firm Alacom Co.

It moves at up to 10km/h (6mph), and can be controlled by someone seeing real-time images on a mobile phone.

The small robot is built on wheels and is equipped with sensors that can detect the movements of intruders.

"Security sensors often set off false alarms but examining the location with the robot will lead to more efficient operations," said a statement from the companies.
