Media / Rocky
« on: December 19, 2006, 10:48:37 AM »
One of the things I have been doing for the last few years has been checking out movies I missed the first time around. A few years ago I saw the Godfather series, then Goodfellas. Last night I saw Rocky for the very first time. It might sound amazing to some people that someone could go so long without having seen it but what can I say ... it happens. Anyway, the movie was something else. It was so simple in many ways and yet so emotional. Of course, that theme song had a big impact. For a movie revolving around a sport, it is interesting that you don't really care what happens at the end in terms of the fight. You just want Rocky to get to the end and for Adrian to be there with him. Truly something worth watching for those like me who may have missed it before.

Comics / Comic Vine

This looks like a site worth checking out for comic fans. They list heroes and villains from all publishers with all the comics they appeared in. Also, they rank characters on powers which should start some debates.

The Shadow knows. It seems that Sam Raimi knows also. He is set to produce a new Shadow movie. So far, no director has been named. The earlier movie with Alec Baldwin is one of my favorites. The Shadow character is really interesting. Full info at this link:

Microsoft Xbox / Horizontal lines on TV when using Xbox 360
« on: December 05, 2006, 06:13:10 PM »
I just got my 360 last week and I noticed that there are these lines on the TV when I am using it. I noticed it more when I tried to watch a movie in widescreen. I know this is related to the 360 because my other consoles work perfectly. I was reading up on it on Microsoft's site and someone said that it has to do with the coaxial cable used for cable TV. I unplugged the cable from the TV and it worked fine. The person said that if you get a DC Ground Blocker & Isolation Transformer, plug it on the end of the coaxial cable and plug it into the TV, it will solve the problem. So I have some questions:

1. Has anyone had this problem?

2. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix the problem?

3. Did anyone try this solution that I mentioned?

4. Where in T&T can I get this item?

Check this page to see the item:

It is item #75-504.

Media / The Protector

I saw this last night as my first Tony Jaa movie. I did not see Ong Bak before. To be honest, I was disappointed. I was expecting action on a level of Jet Li's Fearless and it didn't measure up. Jaa reminds me of Steven Seagal, a lot of brute force and breaking bones. Most of the cool parts were in the trailer. The standout fight was with a capoeira guy who looked a lot like Eddy from the Tekken series. Then again, that was more impressive not because of Jaa but the other guy. Well, if you hard up for some kick up, go see it. If not, skip it. You eh missing much.

Ole Talk / Hottest Women Period
« on: November 13, 2006, 08:12:15 PM »
As the Trini hottest women threads have fizzled and are in danger of dying, I thought it would be better if we opened it up to all women. I will list a few rules for posting:

1. Use thumbnails for posting images. If you don't know how to use thumbnails check out this thread:
http://gatt.carigamers.com/index.php/topic,9652.0.html

2. Image must be of a hot woman.

3. Each post is limited to one image to allow more variety. Multiple posts can exist for one woman, though.

4. The woman must be fully clothed, i.e. top and bottom must be covered. This rule exists so that this thread can exist. We don't want to irk the mods and have the thread be deleted. Please exercise discretion when posting images.

5. Celebs, models, actresses, musicians, etc. can all be included.

6. If you know the name of the woman you are posting, please include it to enlighten anyone who may not be familiar. Of course, this counts for famous people and not necessarily for your next-door neighbour.

7. Enjoy the thread.

To start it off, I will post a pic of one of my favorite models, Priya Rai.

Comics / Favorite comic book villain
« on: October 17, 2006, 09:17:12 AM »
Flip's thread got me thinking and I figured there would have been discussions about favorite heroes already. So, I came up with this one for favorite villains. Now, like Crixx had mentioned, there are many criteria you can use to say who is better or best. However, your favorite is your favorite and nobody can change or counter that. I am starting this poll with only 2 options and I know there will be others that people want to see up there. I will add them as they get mentioned so you can vote for them. I have not read comics in a long time so I may not know some of the more recent villains. When mentioning a villain, please try to include a short description and also why the villain is your favorite. As for me ... I was always a big fan of the Teen Titans way back when. So, Deathstroke was a natural for my favorite villain. For those who don't know, he was a hitman with heightened reflexes/senses. Dodging bullets was small ting for him and he did almost anything for the right price. When his son was kidnapped, he refused to negotiate and attacked and killed the kidnappers. The guy was a consummate bad@$$ and he gets my vote. I include a pic as well.

I have been waiting for one of these to appear (maybe unrealistically) before buying a USB flash drive but here they are finally. Now, the helmet is not the right shape and Darth Vader looking like some kinda teddy bear but is Star Wars.

I guess this means I don't need to buy a HD DVD drive for the 360 when I eventually buy it. As for the PS3 ...

Yes, you read that right. Some scientists have developed new technology that enables developers to use really smally textures. More info from bit-tech.net:

Game file sizes could soon be 70% smaller
Posted 17:47 - 4 October 2006 - by Ryan Garside

One of the most interesting talks at London’s GDC (Games Developers Conference) this week came form one of the lesser known companies called Allegorithmic, who claim they will be able to reduce texture file sizes in games by up to 70%.

Their new programs, that they hope development artists will soon be using as an industry standard, are called ProFX and MaP Zone 2. Their ambition is to keep the graphical quality of game textures at the same standards as current games, whilst dramatically reducing the amount of data required for the game to work.

The implications of such a technology would be far reaching. As the current trend of digital distribution gains momentum a huge emphasis is being placed on games being made smaller and thus downloadable quicker. Their claim is that the current tool of choice for most games artists, Adobe Photoshop, is not ideally suited to making textures for games.

I was doubtful of this technology; however the company ran a demo that persuaded me otherwise. In the demo they had a bathroom full of beautiful textures, then with the flick of a button the bathroom took a more hellish look – all the while the textures looked the equal of Half Life 2.

The next demo was of a game that is due to come out for the XBOX Live Arcade called ‘Roboblitz’. Due to the requirement to get the game under 50MB, the developers needed to keep the textures as small in filesize as possible. Using the new texture system the overall size for all the textures was less than 280KB – watching the game (which runs on the Unreal 3 engine) I was amazed.

Confused by the fact that I hadn’t heard about this technology before, I spoke to one of the men behind it directly - Dr Sébastien Deguy. He assured me that there were no catches with his system, that if a game contained 1GB of textures he would be able to reduce that to 300MB and lose no quality. When I asked why everyone wasn’t using the program at the moment he explained it was due to people needing to be retrained in learning a new system. He was optimistic however, that soon all games companies will be using their new texture tools.

So what are the implications for you and I? In terms of traditionally packaged games that come in boxes, there probably won’t be much difference. Dr Deguy argues that if textures are smaller in file size and easier to create, then next-generation companies will be able to create even more textures for the games. We may then see a big leap forward in how richly detailed games are in the future as they triple the variety of textures the game includes.

The biggest impact however will be the benefits this will have to digital distribution. Games with texture quality and diversity matching Half Life 2 may soon be available in minutes of downloading rather than hours – for gamers this can only be a good thing.

Yes, this is to all those Linux bashers and haters. If you have even a smidgen of an open mind you will give this a try to convince yourself that Windows is the $hit and Linux sucks. Then again, you might end up changing your previous misconceptions about Linux and give it a serious try. Either way, you have nothing to lose except a little download time and a CD. Mandriva has just come out with their 2007 edition and that includes a Live CD version called Mandriva One. For those that don't know, a Live CD is an OS that boots and runs direct from a CD without altering your hard drive in any way. It runs a bit slower than a hard drive installation for obvious reasons but is a good way to try Linux. Now, the big new hook with Mandriva 2007 is that it includes GUI support for a new tech called XGL. I downloaded and tried it on my PC last night and all I can tell you is that it could very well change the image that Linux-haters have towards the OS. It may not bring more game developers to the OS but the sheer coolness of XGL is just something to behold ... and on current graphics hardware to boot. So, I have posted the link to the download below for those open-minded, die-hard Windows users who think that Micro$oft and Vi$ta can do no wrong and just want to convince themselves of that. A couple pointers:

1. Download the KDE version for a desktop environment closer to Windows. It contains non-free graphics drivers needed to enable XGL.
2. Be sure to choose the XGL option when the CD asks in order to enable the eye candy
3. The CTRL and ALT combination along with the arrow keys does some cool stuff
4. Try dragging windows around and off the desktop
5. Hold CTRL and ALT combination and move the mouse around
6. For more stuff to try out, check out the XGL app in the menu

Software, Security, Programming and Internet / Gamers for Linux petition
« on: October 03, 2006, 03:32:34 PM »
I came across this petition and encourage all gamers and Linux users to sign it. Maybe with enough support we can change the minds of game developers to include native Linux support for games. Even if you are not a gamer, keep in mind that support for commercial games in Linux is a big barrier for adoption by many users. Your support is also welcome.
