Nintendo Wii U / Re: Everything Wii want to know about Nintendo Wii
« on: June 19, 2008, 10:05:18 PM »
So, I get this email newsletter called Star Wars Homing Beacon that has little news blurbs about LucasFilm and LucasArts stuff and look what I found:

Quote

I was running DDR3 for a day before I found out how slow it ran compared to my original DDR2 (shown above).

23
In terms of a comparison between the memory I'm running now, about how much of a performance gain would I see from upgrading? Is it going to be a noticable increase?

24
So, now my system looks something like this:

CHP: Nvidia nForce 780i SLI
MB: EVGA 132-CK-NF78
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 @ 3 GHz
GPU: PNY Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT 512 MB
RAM: 4 x 1 GB Corsair DDR2-667 (5-5-5-18)

My memory is 2 sets of this to make 4 GB, I believe:

I was wondering if it makes sense to upgrade the memory and how much faster (percentage wise) it would be if I do. These are some options I am looking at:

DDR2-1200

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220241

DDR2-1150

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220233
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227184
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227196

DDR2-1066

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227181
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145043
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148069

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227191

I'm not sure what difference in speed I would get in going from what I have now to one of these. In addition, how much better would it be to go higher than DDR2-1066? My MB should be compatible with DDR2-1200. Any comments, suggestions and recommendations are welcome.

Benchmarks / Re: vivman1107 Benchmarks
« on: June 17, 2008, 02:33:00 PM »
New MB, EVGA nForce 780i SLI with DDR2 support. I used my old RAM, 4096MB Corsair DDR2 PC6400 (4x1024). How much of a boost I would get with faster DDR2 and what would you guys recommend? I'm running XP, by the way. I dropped Vista a long time ago.

After some tears, I finally settled on an Intel e8400 Core 2 Duo CPU and an EVGA nForce 780i SLI MB.

I re-ran 3DMark06 and replaced my previous result with the new one.

3DMark06: 11,511

So ... I called up CompUSA and asked if I could return the Intel board and the DDR3 memory. They said that I could. Apparently they have been having a lot of returns of new DDR3 supporting boards and their corporate policy is to allow them. I took the advice that you guys have been giving and went with a DDR2 board ... EVGA 780i SLI. I installed it last night but XP wouldn't boot. They did mention that in their manual and that a reinstallation of the OS would be required. I did so and here I am. I just benchmarked it and will post my updates in the benchmark threads. Thanks for all the help guys.

This is going to surprise you guys. I actually updated the BIOS as soon as I installed the board. It is running the newest update (1554). Those benchmark scores were done with the new BIOS.

I decided to upgrade my CPU and ended up doing the motherboard and RAM as well.

Original specs:

CHP: Nvidia nForce 650i SLI
MB: Asus P5N-E SLI
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo processor E6420, dual 2.13GHz cores, 4MB L2 Cache
RAM: 4096MB Corsair DDR2 PC6400 DDR2-800 (4x1024)

New specs:

MB: Intel DX38BT
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400
RAM: 2048MB Corsair DDR3-1066 (2x1024)

My original managed 9,458 in 3DMark06. With the upgrade, I only get in the 7,000's. How is this possible???

It was just totally badass. Edward Norton was awesome. I preferred Jennifer Connelly as Elizabeth in the first Hulk movie but Liv Tyler is good in this one. Quite a few nods to the old TV show in there and a nice ending to top it off.

Check this page out for a bunch of videos:

The one labeled "Gameplay Video" is 3 minutes long and shows all the characters in action. That thing give me goosebumps, it look so sweet.

With the movement from Indiana Jones to The Mummy films ...

I think that this is one of the major reasons that many people were disappointed in the movie. Since the last Indy film, we have seen a vast increase in special effects and CGI in most blockbuster movies. Knowing the pedigree of both Spielberg and Lucas, it stands to reason that if they wanted to go all out with effects, they very well could have.

As for story, it is important to keep in mind that this is not Indy in his prime any more. He is (getting) old and this movie was a passing of the torch to Shia. It seemed that the creators wanted to keep to the style of the previous films and I think they accomplished that. I expected a bit more humor (with Shia) but maybe that will come in the future. Also, there just isn't anything quite like a good fight against the Nazis. Communist Russia didn't seem like a good enough opponent for Indy.

Finally, since the last Indy, there have been quite a few movies in this vein that took over (so to speak) from the series. We have had The Mummy, Tomb Raider, National Treasure, Pirates of the Caribbean and others. Indy was an original and different movie experience before. Now, he just has a lot more competition.

I think the movie stands as a good addition to the series and is on par with Temple of Doom but behind Last Crusade and Raiders. I look forward to the inevitable sequel with Shia as the next Dr. Jones and hope he can reclaim the classic Adventure crown.

Some additional news regarding the movie:

Quote
Gyllenhaal ascends Prince of Persia throne

Jerry Bruckheimer's feature film adaptation of Ubisoft's Prince of Persia series finally has a leading man.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the role of the titular prince will be played by Jake Gyllenhaal (Brokeback Mountain, The Day After Tomorrow). The film industry trade paper is also reporting that starring opposite Gyllenhaal in the leading lady role will be up-and-coming new Bond girl, Gemma Arterton (Quantum of Solace, RocknRolla).

The film is being directed by Mike Newell (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Pushing Tin), with a script by Doug Miro and Carlo Bernard (who teamed together for the screenplay of The Great Raid), Boaz Yakin (Fresh, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights), and Prince of Persia creator Jordan Mechner.

The Hollywood Reporter also has some news of the film's plot. Gyllenhaal will play the princely Dastan as he strives to prevent a nefarious nobleman from obtaining the continuum-controlling Sands of Time. Arterton's character, the princess Tamina, will join him on his quest.

Production on the film is now set to begin in July.

Nintendo Wii U / Re: Everything Wii want to know about Nintendo Wii

WiiWare was launched yesterday. It is similar to Xbox Live Arcade with new downloadable titles that are paid for with Wii Points. 6 titles are available now with new titles to be released every monday. The one that looks most interesting to me is the Final Fantasy city/country building game. I always enjoy city builders and I am curious to see how they add FF touches to one of those.

Yeh, I meant to comment on Rachel not being in the movie as well. Watching her kick @$$ in The Mummy Returns was awesome. She will definitely be missed.

This looks like it is going to kick serious @$$ when it is released in August. Brendan Fraser is back but this time Maria Bello plays Evelyn. John Hannah returns as well as Evelyn's brother. The twist is that the movie is set in Asia and also stars Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh. Directing is Rob Cohen (Fast and Furious, Stealth, XXX) with Stephen Sommers (previous Mummy movies) producing.

I was getting a feeling of deja vu about this thread and I guess it was because there were 2 others dedicated to the upcoming movie. I took the liberty of merging them.
