The Xel'Naga Watchtower / Heart of the Swarm, who's picking it up?
« on: December 13, 2011, 08:36:10 PM »
I really want to get an idea of the numbers for this. With such a large roster, with at least 80% of which have stopped playing the game, who is really going to pick up the expansion aside from the few diehard players we have at this point in time.

I for one will be, mainly for the storyline, i kid you not. I honestly don't have the zeal to play to get better at this point in time because of the effort and time needed to put in to reach that level, not willing to invest it right now.

Graphics Cards / AMD's Radeon HD 7000 Series
« on: December 13, 2011, 11:01:19 AM »
Quote
AMD promised us that by the end of this year the company will come up with its first graphics cores from the HD 7000-series, and these GPUs were just announced today.

Contrary to what everybody has thought however, the chips cover the notebook sector and are nothing more than rebrands of previous HD 6000M parts.

Traditionally AMD has launched its new series of graphics cards at the high-end and then continued with simpler solutions until it reached the value sector.

This time however things are different, as AMD has decided to start with the mobile version of these chips from the Radeon HD 7000M series which are nothing more than rebrands of their old Turks and Caicos GPUs.

While most of us were expecting Southern Island products based on TSMC’s new HKMG 28nm process, the fact of the matter is that TSMC is running late with its 28nm technology as yield and production capacities aren’t where they should be to allow for a 2011 launch of such products.

According to AnandTech, this left AMD in a particularly tough position as the company was concerned that they needed to get new mobile products out by the end of the year, so they were forced to make do with what they had.

There are some indications that 28nm parts could still arrive until the end of the year, but a complete launch is out of the question.

Moving to the parts that AMD introduced today, we see three products being released. Of the three, the Radeon HD 7600M and HD 7500M are based on the Whistler core (previously Turks) while the HD 7400M uses the Seymore XT GPU (previously Caicos).

Unfortunately, details for the new 7000M parts are lacking right now but the new parts should sport higher clocks than their predecessors.

All the HD 7000M parts can be configured with both GDDR5 or DDR3 memory depending on the price segment they target, and feature either a 128-bit or a 64-bit wide memory bus.

Of the three series announced, the HD 7500M is particularly interesting as it comes to bridge the gap between the HD 7600M and HD 7400M by pairing a 480-shader Whistler Pro GPU with a 64-bit wide memory bus.

This is of course going to hurt bandwidth, but notebook makers could still deliver some worthwhile solutions based on this GPU if they pair it with GDDR5 memory, which could enable the GPU to reach the same bandwidth as a similar 128-bit DDR3 equipped model.

All the Radeon HD 7000M parts announced by AMD today should already be available in quite few notebooks, so we should be able to see soon enough how these perform in real life scenarios.

Dropped the ball again? Or maybe a marketing ploy? Who knows....

That article includes some insight into the HD 7950, 7970 and 7990

Quote
Tahiti becomes HD 7950 and 7970, New Zealand becomes HD 7990
Now that we're properly introduced with the GPU core, the time has come to pay more attention to the lineup itself. Given that the memory bus was extended to 384-bits, i.e. the same as GeForce GTX 580, 3GB GDDR5 are being used across the board, and we would not exclude a 1.5GB or even 896MB "7930" part coming as the number of partially functional GPUs increases.

AMD kept the unified clock concept and given that Radeon HD 7970 is based on fully configured "Tahiti XT" GPU, 2048 cores (32 Compute Units) operate at 1GHz clock. 3GB of GDDR5 memory operates in Quad Data Rate mode i.e. 1.37GHz ODR ("effective 5.5GHz"). This results with record video memory bandwidth for a single GPU - 264GB/s.

The HD7950 is based on "Tahiti Pro" and packs 30 Compute Units for 1920 cores operating at 900MHz. The number of ROPs decreased to 60, while Texture units naturally reduced to 120 (as every CU connects to 2 ROPs and 4 TMUs). Our sources did not disclose if the memory controller is still 384-bit or a 256-bit one, but the memory clock was decreased to 1.25GHz, i.e. the same clock as previous gen models. Should 384-bit controller stay, the clock should be good for 240GB/s of bandwidth.

Both products are expected to be released on CES 2012 in Las Vegas, NV, occupying the $349-449 price bracket. Those additional gigabytes of memory (and processing cores) will certainly cost a lot of $$$.

As far as the dual-GPU "New Zealand", 6GB GDDR5 is expected to be clocked on the same level as the HD6990/7970, meaning you will be getting full performance out of the dual-GPU part.

Unlike HD7950 and HD7970, Radeon HD 7990 will debut in March 2012 and the target price is the same as the original price of its predecessor - $699.

Empire Cinema reopens after 8 years
By Susan Mohammed
Story Created: Dec 7, 2011 at 10:54 PM ECT
Story Updated: Dec 7, 2011 at 10:54 PM ECT
The historic Empire Cinema at Penitence Street, San Fernando reopened yesterday.
The renovated three-screen cineplex will seat 900 guests in luxurious comfort with cutting edge surround sound, according to its owner.
The proprietor, who did not wish to be identified, told the Express that the renovations were eight years in the making.
The movie theatre has been closed since 2003 for renovations.
He said with the death of his father, work on the building came to a halt and only came back on track three years later.
"We are continuing in the trend of a mulit-screen cineplex," he said.
"Empire has always been at a great location in the heart of the town on Penitence Street. The cinema is known to be a family entertainment centre, since it was the first non-smoking cinema in the country. It had a great reputation when it closed, and we are continuing to upkeep that great reputation."
The proprietor said the renovations included multi-screens, a sports bar and a car park.
The three screens will accommodate 500 patrons in one, 250 in another and another accommodating 150, with Dolby digital sound.
By Easter the cineplex is expected to add the "3D effect" to movies.
Tickets are priced at $25 for adults and children $20.

So no more Movie Towne for me. Derek Chin cud s.... not take my money any more...

1) I hope those prices there remain the same. We here in Trinidad suffer from false advertising all the time

2) Wonder if National Cinema is going to be able to compete with those prices?

3) They changed the parking policies on the roads in San Fernando... parking is going to be an issue and the road by Harris Promenade is already in a mess. GG

News / Trinidad and Tobago attain 'Developed Country' status

An historic month for Trinidad & Tobago
Posted 30 October 2011 by Arthur Snell  |  0 comments

The most important month in the history of Trinidad and Tobago is just coming to an end.

I imagine you’re wondering what on earth prompts me to write this.  Lots of other months in Trinidad and Tobago’s history have witnessed much more drama and global attention.  You could argue that the most important month was August 1962 when Trinidad and Tobago got its independence. Or April 1970 and the Black Power tumults. Or July 1990 and the Muslimeen coup attempt.

Everybody knows those dates as key milestones in the history of this country. But October 2011?  What’s so important about that?

Before I answer that I wanted to ask another question – is Trinidad and Tobago a developed country? This is one that, rightly, matters to people here.  The achievement of developed country status has been an objective of the government of Trinidad and Tobago for some years. Vision 2020 was a major national campaign to reach that aim.  And like any ambition, you have to have a way of knowing when you’ve got there.

Which brings me back to October 2011.  It all comes down to something called the OECD DAC list.  The OECD, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, is an international economic organisation based in Paris. It has 34 member countries, including the UK as well as most of the countries of the EU, Japan, Australia and North America.  The OECD, among other things, plays an important role in co-ordinating the aid policies of the world’s biggest donor countries.  This includes the definition of which are actually developing countries – the so-called DAC list – that qualify for aid money from the biggest donors, whether it’s the USA, Japan or major European countries.

In October 2011 the DAC list was updated.  For the first time, Trinidad and Tobago is no longer on that list, reflecting a sustained period of economic growth and relatively high per capita income.  This means that the premier international organisation that makes a judgement on such matters considers T&T to be a developed country. Of course, it would be simplistic to suggest that being a developed country is the same as a country in which everyone has access to development. All countries, whether officially regarded as developed or developing, are in a state of development and change.  This goes for the UK as much as for T&T.  And for some purposes, being a developed country may seem a disadvantage – T&T might no longer qualify for certain types of aid or funding.

But there has to be a point in time when the consensus of opinion regards a change as having taken place.  In the case of Trinidad and Tobago, that point was October of this year: you made it. You are now a developed country.  I’ve not seen this achievement noted anywhere in the press or by the government. Surely this is the most important moment in your history?

Ole Talk / T&T is World's Best Tourist Destination?
« on: October 17, 2011, 11:36:14 AM »
http://www.trinidadexpress.com/news/T_T_is_World_s_Best_Tourist_Destination-131958493.html

Quote
TRINIDAD and Tobago has been voted the World's Best Tourist Destination for 2012 and has also been declared the Favourite Cultural Destination in 2012.

The announcement was made on October 9 when tourism organisations from 27 European Union member states voted unanimously during the Autumn Meeting of the European Union Council on Tourism and Trade in Bucharest, Romania.

The designation of the World's Best Tourist Destination is the highest honour to be awarded for a country's achievements in tourism.

A four-member team from the European Council, led by the Minister of Energy of Romania and the Council Vice-President, arrived in Trinidad on Saturday to present the award to the Government and People of Trinidad and Tobago.

In a statement yesterday, Minister of Tourism, Dr Rupert Griffith, said he received the news on October 10.

"We are, actually, the first country in the Western Hemisphere to receive such an award," Griffith said.

"I was also honoured and humbled to be inducted (on Sunday) as an honorary member of the European Union Tourism Academy. All of this augurs well for Trinidad and Tobago as we strive to brand Trinidad and Tobago as a premier destination in the Caribbean region."

The Best Tourist Destination award is offered to countries that have complied with the United Nations Tourism Division, UNESCO and the European Union on Tourism and Trade's principles "on fair tourism, ethical tourism and safety standards and the historic preservation of cultural sites".

On the debate for the award, Dr Anton Caragea, president of the European Union Council on Tourism and Trade (EUCTT), presented a report titled: "Trinidad and Tobago — A Success Story in Tourism".

Among the reasons for the award of World's Best Tourist Destination for 2012 to Trinidad and Tobago, Caragea highlighted the respect for cultural patrimony and traditions "in offering to tourists a possibility to participate in impressive paraphernalia festivals such as Holi, Hosay, Divali, Corpus Christi, Eid-ul-Fitr, Tobago Heritage Festival, Tobago Fest and Trinidad's greatest show on earth (Carnival)".

T&T's dedication to the protection of the environment, especially along the east coast, the wetlands, beaches and ecological and geographical biodiversity was also hailed.

Caragea also praised the range of activities which include wildlife photography in places such as El Tucuche Reserve, Valencia Wildlife Sanctuary, Caroni Bird Sanctuary, cave exploration at Gasparee Caves, cycling and hiking at Argyle Waterfall and kayaking at Paria Bay and Tobago.

The EUCTT was established in 2005 and its member countries include Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Spain and Sweden among others.

The award has previously been presented to Syria in 2007, Turkey in 2008, United Arab Emirates in 2009 and the Republic of Korea (South Korea) in 2010.

Forgive me if this seems unpatriotic off the bat.. but burr?

I will give credit to those whom credit is due, but like anything else good that happens in this country, every man jack and he pottong go ride this, which to me, is unfair to those who actually made this happen. Those who contribute and work tirelessly towards the tourism industry in this country ie Tobago. I saw a $100 million budget for Tobago and Tourism for the fanancial year. Really not sure if thats better or worse than previous years.

Yes it seems mainly because of the wide range of cultural experiences here attributed to the pluralistic society we live in. The various religious entities being the majority listed in the article, and i must say it's one of the things i enjoy most about living here. Experiencing a "multiverse" of cultural in such a small country. There's also mention of environmental protection.. again.. bur? I guess they didn't visit the other side of the country...

But this also brings me to question the SoE again. If this country can attain such a high esteemd award on the global stage while our crime situation is "out of control".. what's really going on here? Isn't crime supposed to be a repelling factor to tourism? Just speculation of course.
