Mobile Phones & Gadgets / Phone Change Debate (Apple's need not Apply)
« on: August 21, 2014, 09:45:32 AM »
Okie Dokes Folks

Here's the sitch. I've got a NOTE 3, while it serves as a great phone and does everything I want it has a few shortcomings.
1. it's massive and is literally warping the pockets of my pants.
2. I have no need for the stylus and size of the phone's capabilities.

So i'm in the market for a new phone. But with the Sheer options of Android phones out there. But I've gotten a much better sense of what I use my phone for and therfore the needs I have.

1. Music, I LOVE music, I have a lot of music on my phone so much so that the Note 3 is almost full and 80% of that is music - SO i need a phone with a large/expandable memory available. (larger native would obv be better)
2. Fitness - I run, I box and a number of other things and as such I need a phone that's not a little bitch with sweat/water/protein powder etc.
3. I'm a klutz and find that Tech21 makes the best damn cases ever (dont believe me, google it.) SO if Tech 21 makes a case for it, EVEN better.
4. Decent screen/Sound quality, I don't really ever get a chance to watch movies/shows on it.
5. SPEED - I multitask a LOT, music, whatsapp, googling images, replying to emails it has to have the ability to handle that quickly without much lag. Something I've NOTEiced happening here.

I'm not allied to Samsung specifically, but I do want an android phone

The MOBA Dome / Samuel L Jackson Announcer Pack
« on: September 05, 2013, 12:42:05 PM »
So.. Since Sammy J (I call him that cause we cool)
Won't do a Samuel L Jackson announcer pack for DOTA 2,
I'm going to snip together various clips from his movies and make a rough one.
clearly there needs to be a number of ones he would have to fill in.. BUT...
Goal is, build most of it, put it on the steam workshop, get it really popular and then force his hand into voicing the rest (like roshan lines etc)

THAT being said.
I need you guys help...
Suggest quotes for specific instances (the movie it came from helps as well)

There are guidelines here: http://www.dota2.com/workshop/requirements/announcers
which would help us organizing things.

Ole Talk / State of Gaming 2013
« on: June 11, 2013, 09:55:49 AM »
I think it's necessary to do this once a year. To really keep tabs on where the hell gaming is going/has been/has developed. *This is my 2c

First off I believe there are generally 3 kinds of gamers 4 if you count magical unicorn girl gamers (jk ladies)

Young Gamer
- I gave these guys a category because there are gamers who don't have control of what they can/can't consume. Kids who've got to rely on momndad to purchase console/pc/games etc. A massive part of the Gaming market.

Casual Gamer - These gamers spend a couple hours a day max playing games on any platform: Mobile, PC, Console. My definition of a Casual gamer is someone that for them, gaming is not their main form of entertainment.

Hardcore Gamer - A Gamer for whom gaming is their main form of entertainment, couple hours a day minimum.

Graphics - We've reached a stage where cutting edge graphics are so damn good, even 'major' improvements come across as small achievements. e.g. noticing the difference between 100,000 and 200,000 polygons. Our eye can only really tell so much of a difference. So much so that we've seen a return to more cartoonish styles of graphics.

Franchises - I think, much like hollywood, we are being subjected to relatively the same types of games as we are movies. Remakes of old games, a refresh of a series (fifa/cod/etc). With a burgeoning but still very small group of indie game houses that are producing some fresh, innovative content I can't help but think that the very thing that makes them awesome, is what they will lose by becoming too successful.

e.g. when it's 4 guys in a garage coding out a fun interactive game and they hit 500million downloads.. now all of a sudden they are a big business with bills to pay and to me, the bigger a corporation, the less innovation we see in their franchises.
e.g. EA etc.

Storyline - As Gaming is becoming more and more social/online I've been seeing less and less games with compelling storylines. Those that do have some storyline are often hailed as fantastic games. TBH how many of you knew battlefield 3 had a singleplayer? For years before I ever played it I thought it was only a multiplayer game.
Storyline is one of those things that can make a good indie game, a firetrucking brilliant cult classic

Gameplay - seeing as Graphics are so close to the bleeding edge, and when it comes down to it, an FPS is an FPS.
I see the real kicker being the innovation of extra dynamics, e.g. shell shock in FPS, Explodable buildings (as we've seen before) they are making things more and more realistic with each iteration.
MMO's are the future, not MMORPGS but MMO in general, people want to interact on a grand scale.

Everything is Online, EVERYTHING. With it Comes DRM to help safeguard profits and provide a great distribution system.

I think in all, Gaming is undergoing a revolution. there is a serious move towards indie developers being a viable source for new gaming concepts and innovation (Oculus rift, handful of kickstarter gaming projects). Whereas we see the Big Studios who still create the mainstream appeal but their offerings become slimmer and slimmer each year. The Gaming industry is growing, with the rise of mobile gamers who use games to fill a void (taking a poop, waiting in line, on the bus/train.) The new micropayments system which help ensure a games longevity. E.g. Dota, 'basically' free to play yet I'm sure they rake in millions each month with the small cosmetic items available in the store.

*DISCLAIMER*
I urge you guys not to get into that discussion here. This is meant to be a state of the industry. not a debate about whether it's good or not.

Saw this post on reddit
http://i.imgur.com/1P5mXi7.jpg

and it made me wonder, more and more console's are growing leaps and bounds faster than the current 'dvd/blu-ray players'
I was wondering, with the prices of cutting edge format players being consistently higher than consoles which seem to have stuck at a $500 pricepoint (on launch).
Also considering that both prices 'degrade' around the same rate. As the older population gets 'phased out' in lieu of more tech savvy adults.

Will the Stand-alone player go bye bye?

*Personally I'd buy a VLC box.

Peripherals / Thinking of Purchasing a Projector for the office
« on: May 08, 2013, 04:33:47 PM »
So i'm running an office and we have space for a projector setup. My question is...
Is it viable in this day and age? Or should I just spring for a Fairly large monitor and wall mount that badboy?

The Plus about the projector is that I can lug it around to presentations, but maybe the monitor may be more suited for in-office pres?

Thoughts? Suggestions?
Have projectors become cheap enough that buying a new one might be more viable?

Media / Ender's Game
« on: May 08, 2013, 09:39:41 AM »
I cannot believe this wasn't posted already.

I had the joy of reading this book when I was in school for a project. Arguably one of the best written and novel concepts i've experienced in a long while. The movie has been in the making for quite some time and in truth it is going to be a cult classic. If you've read the book you will be very excited about this story.

Ole Talk / Question for the FIFA Men
« on: May 02, 2013, 08:53:11 PM »
Every year, a new Fifa comes out, and honestly, ah feel like ah taking firetrucking crazy pills.
It is immeasurably different. I feel EA have a lawsuit for Apple for infringing on the right to change one thing and call it an entirely new product.

For all intents and purposes the graphics on a console cannot get any better than it already is.
I say console because fifa is  (AFAIK) played mostly via console online.

It occurs to me that they could just as easily release DLC when new information comes out
e.g. if FIFA was a yearly subscription service... how awesome would it be to have a ladder where real world events impacted the game. i.e. Bayern Munchen wins the CL, so therefore their stats are adjusted (however the hell FIFA works it out)

It seems to me, that this system needs a Revamp.
TBH I Don't even actually play fifa, so Someone may need to point out where i'm wrong but juh man, u cud put fifa 12 and fifa 13 next to each other and i dare you to tell me any major differences.

IMO FIFA + Subscription/DLC is the truth.
Either paid DLC or a subscription basis.

Thoughts? Ideas? Dissents? Riots?

My phone has been freezing more and more lately.

It began after I installed some humble bundle games,
I did a factory reset and it still crashes for no particular reason.
Touch screen becomes unresponsive and i am forced to do a soft reset.
What information can I provide that might make it easier for you guys to help me?

It is rather frustrating.
