Check this out.  A machine built by Xenon Systems that can be described as a mini-mainframe of sorts.....

The bloody thing have 128 GB of RAM.

I should point out that that forum Arc links to is dated to 2002.... Damn impressive at the time, STILL impressive now..I wonder what would be a comparable system today...

256GB RAM, perhaps, given that 4GB DDR(2) RAM modules exist?

Nah, that would be talkign FB-DIMM catergory... and yeah mainframes and datacentres pack that kinda RAM... what you have to realize is that such a machine is a rack server with prolly up to 100 Blades each packing multicore and up to 8GB or more or ram per blade... at the end of the day its easy to accomplish in that areana of hardware.
