I'm genuinely surprised. Christopher Tolkien gave every indication he'd take these movie rights with him to the grave.

I wanted this to be true, and i'll be glad to see it come to fruition.. the book was a nicely paced ACTION PACKED epic DESERVING of its own movie damnit!!!

the LOTR universe is vaster than the entire star wars galaxy ... There is still enough material to make a  mini series of movies from Tolkein's 'unfinished stories' as well as that new book , The Children of Hurin.

This project has gone through many phases since it was announced all those years ago. Guillermo del Toro was attached to direct, then he left...people are wondering if these films are ever going to come out.

Well, some hopeful news has surfaced =]

UPDATES

- Peter Jackson will direct (currently wrapping up negotiations)

- It will be shot in 3D (wonder how the people who always whine about 3D feel about this?)

- Release dates are December 2012 and December 2013 (replicating the release pattern of the original LOTR trilogy)

Great stuff...I remember reading The Hobbit when I was in school, then I saw an animated version of it way back in the 80s on VHS.  It has always been a childhood dream of mine that this story should be made into a movie.

Transformers, Iron Man...and now THIS!!?

F@#K yeah!!!  :awesome:

To those of us who grew up actually READING such great fiction and will soon relive the experience, i salute us all for the dying talent that the world is losing now, both to great books and great unique writers.

Hear hear!!

(Now if only some director will take up the challenge to put the Artemis Fowl series to film... hmmm...)

Read this book and it was awesome. Saw the LOTR movies before i read the book though so i got to take in the movie without an pre-conception of how it should look. Only disappointment for me is we have to wait ~2 years more to take these in.
