Best of Free Software (Started August 2008)
« on: August 23, 2008, 08:16:08 AM »
Simple premise:

As of 2008, what is the best free software you use on your computer?

Hit us the application name and it's purpose

I"ll start with some of my favs:

Irfan View: Image viewer, slideshow, image file renamer, batch resizer, generally all light image manipulation, free and extremely fast.

Winamp: If you don't know what winamp is, get the hell out of this forum, j/k. It's the defacto mp3 player from old. Many have attempted to steal it's spot on my rig as the default mp3 playback app and failed. (Yes, I"m looking at you windows media player 11)

RSS Owl: An opensource RSS reader. Spoon feeds me all the posts from the gatt site and other tech sites. It's proven to be a killer way to stay informed and on top of the websites that offer RSS feeds.

AVG Free 8.0: Been using AVG AntiVirus since version 7, I've found it to be a trust worthy companion and not as clunky as mcafee and norton.

WallPaper Master: IF you're tired of having the same desktop image gracing your screen for months on end, then this is for you. Put a bunch of your favourite images in a folder and let Wall Paper Master do the rest.

Google Photo ScreenSaver: This app brings your digital photos to life on your monitor. Does a much better job than the built in windows photo screensaver.

Firefox 3: Best internet browser imo.

Treesize: This app gives you a graphical break down of your hard drive, showing you the size of all your folders. Great for answering the question "20gB free on my 500gb drive, wtmc....where did all the space go???"

AIMP2: I was also hooked on winamp and thought there couldn't be anything better but this Russian program made me change my mind. Winamp has since been uninstalled from my system because I have no need for it. This program makes playing your music so easy, with tabbed viewing of playlists while automatically grouping subfolders of music together. Try it and see, you just might like it.

You can get it here AIMP2

lol, Jet Audio still real bad eh.

It was the only app at the time that could handle "video slide show" of a live monitored folder. We couldn't have done the game video / trailers display at Euro+ without it.

I'm pretty sure VLC would be up to that task now but never tried it.

Now that we mention it, VLC and MPC definitely still earn spots on my PC.

That AIMP2 looks very cool fish. Gonna try that.

Damn, you're right. AIMP2 FTW yes. Retire in winamp mc. That "send to folder" option  from the playlist is a nifty addition. Something I've always wished winamp would have added.

Personally, I like the UltraVNC as it works just like radmin but its free and has even MORE features and cool features, like the ability to have it run w/o an icon in the tray etc.

radmin is faster than ultravnc. I use ultravnc because it's free but I won't deny radmin's superiority in the speed department. rdp pwns them all but that's a whole other thread.

...does songbird allow me to double click my songs in my folders to open?
What can you do to end the hunger?
It's no surprise that many will die with the coming shortage of food
When there is no grain to feed the butchered cows
When there is nothing to feed yourselves...
Then you will see that money can't be eaten.
