The Definitive TV Series thread
« on: March 28, 2009, 11:13:14 AM »
The name says it all.

This is a listing of all the "must see" TV series out there and a lil synopsis. One post, one series, attach pix to give the newbies a visual idea of what all the fuss is about.

I'll the start the ball rolling with:

Prison Break:

The series revolves around two brothers; one who has been sentenced to death for a crime he did not commit, and the other, a genius, who devises an elaborate plan to help him escape prison.

SupernaturaThis television drama is about two brothers, Sam and Dean, who were raised by their father, John, to hunt and kill all things that go "bump in the night" after his wife, Mary, was murdered by something supernaturally evil when the boys were young.

How I Met Your Mother

Told in flashbacks, by a father to his children, this series follows Ted, and his group of friends in NY, as he tries to find 'the one'.
Throughout the series, the children's mother is not mentioned by name, but only hinted at.

the real show stealer for me, though, is Barney Stinson ( Neil Patrick Harris)

"Tell me where the gaddamn bomb is!!!"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/24_(TV_series)

Federal Agent Jack Bauer can't afford to always play by the rules. As a member of the L.A. Counter Terrorist Unit, Jack must stop bombs, viruses, assassination attempts, and usually save someone he cares about at the same time. Every season of this series has 24 episodes, each unfolding in real time following a consecutive hour in one very bad day.

Fringe

The series follows an FBI Fringe Division team based in Boston, Massachusetts. The team uses unorthodox "fringe" science and FBI investigative techniques to investigate "the Pattern", a series of unexplained, often ghastly occurrences which are occurring all over the world. The show has been described as a cross between The X-Files, Altered States, The Twilight Zone and Dark Angel.

House M.D.

House, also known as House, M.D., is an American medical drama that debuted on the Fox network on November 16, 2004. The show was created by David Shore and executive produced by Shore and film director Bryan Singer. The show revolves around Dr. Gregory House (British actor Hugh Laurie), a cynical medical genius with a damaged leg arising from an incorrect diagnosis and an addiction to painkillers, who heads a team of diagnosticians at the fictional Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital (PPTH).

Heroes

The series tells the stories of ordinary individuals from around the world who inexplicably develop superhuman abilities, and their roles in preventing disasters, usually foreseen in images produced by precognitive painters.

Stargate Universe

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stargate_universe

Stargate Universe was conceived as "a completely separate, third entity" in the live-action Stargate franchise as opposed to Stargate Atlantis, which was created as a spin-off from the first series Stargate SG-1. Stargate Atlantis producer Joseph Mallozzi stated that Universe aims to "delight veteran fans, but also appeal to newcomers who may not necessarily know the difference between an Alteran and an Asuran", and that it is "in many ways [...] a much more cerebral and mature addition to the franchise. While firmly entrenched in pre-established Stargate mythology, Stargate Universe definitely strikes out in an exciting new direction..The new show will be more serialized than its predecessors.

Rome

The series is a historical drama depicting the period of history surrounding the violent transformation of the Roman Republic into the Roman Empire; a change driven by civil warfare between radical populares and conservative optimates, the decay of political institutions, and the actions of ambitious men and women.

While chronicling the lives and deeds of the rich, powerful and "historically significant," the series also focuses on the lives, fortunes, families and acquaintances of two common men: Lucius Vorenus and Titus Pullo, two Roman soldiers mentioned historically in Caesar's Commentarii de Bello Gallico. The fictionalized Vorenus and Pullo manage to witness and often influence many of the historical events presented in the series.

Based on Jeff Lindsay's novel "Darkly Dreaming Dexter," this new crime thriller tells the story of a strange man named Dexter Morgan. Once an abused and abandoned child, Dexter is now a successful forensics pathologist...but lurking just beneath his charismatic personality is a terrible truth. Dexter has corralled his innate homicidal urges into a closely guarded second career: He hunts down and brutally murders those vicious criminals who have managed to avoid the clutches of the law... A serial killer that hunts serial killers.

Anyone who's seen this show will be more attached to the characters and storyline than the fact you even see blood

Being Erica is a Canadian television comedy-drama series, first aired on January 5, 2009.
The short 13 episode first season follows "Erica Strange", single, 32 years old, and very well educated (but under-achieved).
She begins seeing a counsellor to deal with regrets in her life, only to discover the counsellor has the ability to send her back in time to actually change these events.
What follows is an emotional, hilarious and witty treat that makes it in my humble opinion, one of the best tv shows out there.

Spartacus: Blood and Sand is a Starz original television series that premiered on January 22, 2010. The series focuses on the historical figure of Spartacus (played by Andy Whitfield), a Thracian gladiator who from 73 to 71 BC led a major slave uprising against the Roman Republic. Executive producers Steven S. DeKnight and Robert Tapert focused on structuring the events of Spartacus' obscure early life leading to the records of history. The show has been rated TV-MA for graphic violence, strong sexual content, and major profanity. On December 22, 2009, it was announced that the show was renewed for a second season before even premiering.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spartacus_blood_and_sand

The first thing you'll think when you look at this show is "300 meets gladiator meets softcore porn"

You've seen it all before, T&A, Men in Sandals slashing each other to death, blood everywhere, CGI to the max and enough swear words to make Rachel Price blush.

But then there's the twist....ok wait....there is no twist, you have seen it all before.

If anything bad can be said about Spartacus, is that it is unoriginal in every way, predictable (usually the case with historical pieces) and cliche laden. The dialog is no match for HBO's Rome nor the character development.

Still, if you're a fan of boobs, frontal nudity, bloodshed, cussin and sandals you've got it all buffet style in this bold, historical time piece.

Leave your cerebral cortex at the door.
