You think that goes for everyone?
How much u gonna play valve and blizzard games over and over?
And maybe you can do it, but some of us still want other games...

All i'm saying is that valve is still going to be selling games from other developers as well as themselves over steam... on Windows 8.
Watch and see.

The counter point to all this is indie games. Indie games are smaller, the developer committment is much less to put out the linux ports. The extra income actually affects their bottom line so they're inclined to do it, especially if they're a hit indie game. And a lot of indie games are really good. That's where I do more and more indie gaming these days thanks to the Humble Bundles and Desura.

When Steam on Linux comes out, that is probably all you're going to see for a few years is indie games and all the old games that Epic and id used to port to linux before their rising costs and piracy fears made them conservative console developers. http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTA5MzQ http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=ODI1OA That's fine by me.

Case in point is the Humble Bundles. Those are all major indie hits and they all have linux ports (They need them to be admitted, so the Humble Bundles are partially responsible for the success of indie gaming on Linux). The sales charts always show us a bit less than a 1/4 of all sales, same as the Mac people and we pay more. So there is definitely an audience.

To me Linux on the desktop will win when the people currently using it can run all the apps they want on it natively and easily. The best sign of that is looking at the top ten list of apps people run using Wine. That's basically Steam and Valve games, Blizzard games, office and photoshop. We're never getting photoshop or office. Now we have Valve. Only a matter of time.

New TOS for steam.. not liking it so much

Quote
Every so often we need to update the Steam Subscriber Agreement (“SSA”) and Valve’s Privacy Policy. These documents are the terms to which you (and all Steam users) agreed when first creating an account. Whenever we need to make changes to these agreements we like to bring the changes to your attention and explain why they’re necessary. The next time you log in to Steam you’ll be asked to read and agree to the new terms.

This time around there are a number of changes reflected in both documents including the opening of a new Valve office in Luxembourg to better serve our EU customers and partners. If you live in the EU, your SSA will be with our Luxembourg subsidiary Valve S.a.r.l. and the SSA has been amended to reflect additional terms specific to our EU customers. We've added other terms related to the Steam Wallet and Steam trading to accommodate new features and capabilities of Steam.

We’re also introducing a new dispute resolution process that will benefit you and Valve. Recently, a number of companies have created similar provisions which have generated lots of discussion from customers and communities, and we’ve been following these discussions closely. On Steam, whenever a customer is unhappy with any transaction, our first goal is to resolve things as quickly as possible through the normal customer support process. However in those instances in which we can't resolve a dispute, we've outlined a new required process whereby we agree to use arbitration or small claims court to resolve the dispute. In the arbitration process, Valve will reimburse your costs of the arbitration for claims under a certain amount. Reimbursement by Valve is provided regardless of the arbitrator’s decision, provided that the arbitrator does not determine the claim to be frivolous or the costs unreasonable.

Most significant to the new dispute resolution terms is that customers may now only bring individual claims, not class action claims. We considered this change very carefully. It’s clear to us that in some situations, class actions have real benefits to customers. In far too many cases however, class actions don’t provide any real benefit to users and instead impose unnecessary expense and delay, and are often designed to benefit the class action lawyers who craft and litigate these claims. Class actions like these do not benefit us or our communities. We think this new dispute resolution process is faster and better for you and Valve while avoiding unnecessary costs, and that it will therefore benefit the community as a whole.

Thanks for reading through our thoughts on these updates and for your continued use of Steam.

I'm pretty sure its similar to what MS instituted on XBL with one of the updates not too long ago... basically if you think you have a case to sue, you and you ALONE will battle our PANEL of expensive lawyers... where's the lube?

an interesting interpretation of the new TOS for steam

Interesting how EU is exempt given the new stance their laws take in regards to this.

Launch Set of "Software" Titles Coming Sept 5

Aug 8, 2012 -- Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Counter-Strike, Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, Portal, and Team Fortress) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced the first set of Software titles are heading to Steam, marking a major expansion to the platform most commonly known as a leading destination for PC and Mac games.

The Software titles coming to Steam range from creativity to productivity. Many of the launch titles will take advantage of popular Steamworks features, such as easy installation, automatic updating, and the ability to save your work to your personal Steam Cloud space so your files may travel with you.

More Software titles will be added in an ongoing fashion following the September 5th launch, and developers will be welcome to submit Software titles via Steam Greenlight.

"The 40 million gamers frequenting Steam are interested in more than playing games," said Mark Richardson at Valve. "They have told us they would like to have more of their software on Steam, so this expansion is in response to those customer requests."

I never thought I would live to see this day.  :awesome:

One of my personal all-time favourites from the Dreamcast (which I still have btw :happy0203: ) has been remastered, and is now on Steam, and XBox Live...

Who woulda thunk it? :laughing7:

Nice find but I think that splash screen is just silly.

Call me old school, but it gets closed the second it shows its face.

Once I installed splash 8 it doesnt even show itself, it automatically loads to desktop. The metro interface is absolutely horrible for desktop use.

I like it for a tablet and maybe a htpc. I can see Windows 8 is gonna be an it helpdesk horror.

...and you aren't exactly a Windows n00b,am I right?

M$ needs a serious marketing campaign to show the non-techies how to use that UI.
'Horror' is an understatement.  Not recommending it for ANY of my clients who barely know their way around Windows 7...let alone this travesty.

It two main things making this an IT nightmare.
1. The Metro interface is a big change from the previous. It requires a good bit of relearning.
2. The fact that Metro and traditional desktop are both running at the same time. Internet Explorer running in Metro and Internet Explorer running in desktop mode are actually two different instances (maybe even two different program). The fact that you can switch to both on the fly I see as being very difficult to comprehend for novice users. I wish they would've set that the os runs in either Desktop mode or Metro mode per logon session.

Well when you buy the OS, Microsoft sends you a neat tutorial email to explain the basics to a noob.

I'm guessing they did this because of all the bad press Windows 8 has been getting as being unfriendly to novice users.
