Interesting 8800 GTX Fix
« on: May 30, 2009, 01:23:24 PM »
This fellow had some issues with his 8800gtx and attempted to reflow it using his oven. Similar idea is used when trying to repair the 360 RROD, heat it up to allow cold solder joints to reconnect. Never saw this technique before though lol, probably not going to last in the long term.

Re: Interesting 8800 GTX Fix - WORKS Tested By UG
« Reply #5 on: August 22, 2009, 05:24:36 AM »
Well fellas, we know the rules of necro, but i didn't want to start a new thread, since it was here that i get this info from first.

About 1-2 Months ago i built a PC for a lady, d same one who get the Monitor with the dead pixel in it. Anywho, she call and say that it freezing, so i tell she to drop by d office and i go take a look at it. Now, the graphics card that she had in it was the only used part, an 8800GT that i was sporting in my PC.

I turn on she system and it have red and blue wavy lines all over the monitor so i know instantly is gpu (3 gpu's died on me so far). I switch to onboard to confirm, and it works. Now i contemplating what i could do to help the lady out, she have warranty on the rest of the parts, but none on the gpu (she was ok with that). So see yuh boy jump on the net to check out this fix i remember somebody post here a while ago.

Now, i have lots to thank woodyear for because, this sh!t works well. Simple steps.
1 - Preheat oven to 385 F
2 - Remove heatsink
3 - Clean off thermal paste
4 - Place in a baking pan lined with aluminum foil, using 3 - 4 balls built of foil to avoid touching the pan (so its suspended)
*also be sure that the foil balls are not touching any of the circuitry - place GPU side down
5 - Bake from 6 - 10 minutes in the ovens lowest shelf (I did mine for exactly 8 mins).
6 - Remove from oven, and let cool for an hour (I did it for 30 mins)
7 - Reapply fresh thermal compound (I use arctic silver)
8 - Mount back the heatsink and marvel at an oven!!! :sassy:

I wanted to let all you fellow gatters know that this works, so you wont't do like me and throw out 3 "spoiled" graphics cards. If you've got no warranty and an oven, you have a good chance of getting back up an running within 2 hours.

U kidding me right? It actually work???

UG: Ma'am, I fixed the problem. Your PC is ok now.
Customer: Excellent. Thank you very much. Oh, by the way, what was the problem?
UG: The video card was giving trouble.
Customer: So what did you have to do? Replace it?
UG: *Mutters under breath* I ummm...I baked it.
Customer: You did what now?
UG: I replaced it, yea.

What amazes me is that the plastic stuff on the card didn't melt.  Granted, you took off
the heatsink and fan, but aren't there a lot of little plastic bits all over the PCB?

You know, thats a good point. I dont know there to be that many plastic parts on a pcb other than the power connector, but still. How come that didnt melt?

Well from what i read, different plastics have different melting points (obviously), but here are some that i found

The melting point of HDPE (High Density Polyethelyne) is about 130 ºC
The melting point of LDPE (Low Density Polyethelyne) is about 110 ºC
The melting point of PET (Polyethylene terphthalate) is about 250—260 ºC
The melting point of PP (Polypropylene) is about 160—170 ºC
The melting point of PS (Polystyrene) is about 70—115 ºC
The melting point of PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) is about 75—90 ºC

The temperature of my oven was 385 F which is 196 C. its probable that the temperature the plastic melts is higher than the given temp of 385. It was also said that this "baking" method is what the companies do to set the solder on their electrical components
