"After a screening yesterday morning, very reliable sources have told Awards Campaign that the HFPA were incredibly positive about Cameron's latest endeavor.  In fact, it's now very likely to be nominated in both the Best Picture - Drama and Best Director categories when the Golden Globe nominations are announced next Tuesday.  This was almost unthinkable a week ago and may push expected Globe nominees such as "The Hurt Locker" or "An Education" out of the Best Picture - Drama race.  Additionally, this could (emphasis on "could") find "Avatar" seriously being considered for one of the ten nominees for Oscar's Best Picture trophy -- especially considering the 8-10th slots hardly seem secure at this point in the race."

Ok, I've just got back home from the first showing...

I will sum it up like this:

If you plan to watch this in Movie Towne, make sure they are showing the 3D version. If not, it's worth going CC8 to take in the 3D version! Having seen it for myself, I was absolutely blown away by the added depth of the use of 3D.

Story is nothing original, but they still did it well. Voice acting was well done, a solid blend of drama and action, but ultimately a love story, so keep that in mind if you're looking for ZOMGEXPLOSIONSEXPLOSIONSMICHAELBAYPLOSIONS!!!!

Hats off to Weta Digital for their excellent work, this is an absolute shoo-in for Visual Effects at next year's Oscars.

Absolutely worth a 2nd (and 3rd) watching for the simple fact of 3D. I'd give this overall a solid A.

BTW, the trailer they showed before the start of Avatar also looks so much more awesome in 3D...I hope they give it the same treatment when it comes out next year :D.

^ Good to hear!

However I'm sure this question is on a lot of folks' minds - Is the price of a ticket for the 3D version really $35USD as printed in the Newsday? 0_0

Not as far as I know, because it's the Caribbean Cinemas chain of theatres that is implementing the 3D projection systems. If Movie Towne wants them, they have to get it on their own. If Movie Towne was offering it, I think their lineup would distinguish the regular from 3D versions like how CC8 listed them. I guess you can confirm that when you head there yourself Wyatt :) . If you have your first viewing in 2D, make the trip to CC8 another time for the 3D...and it still costs less than a regular MT flick :).

Just to note, CC8 has 2 3D screens (separate running times) and one regular screen showing Avatar. What sucks is that the largest screen is showing the regular version; 2 of the smaller screens are handling the 3D aspect versions.

The story is nothing new, but the animation is solid, albeit a few caveats, like some of the closeup fire animation etc. It still looks stunning overall though.

What would I give to see this in IMAX though :( ...

got damn, 3 hours of meh.

Well not quite.

The ending was almost worth the price of admission. The final battle being epic enough to give goose bumps after all that running around in the bush playing tarzan for a good 2 hours.

If you're a light sleeper, I suggest you enjoy some shut eye in between gun shots and this will be a 10/10 action flick.

Watch the entire thing and the underwhelming, drawn out middle might lean you towards my score....a firm 7/10

I'd only go Cinema 8 to catch the last 30 minutes in 3D yes, the rest is a snore fest.

*edit*

Just read your spoiler link arc.

Agree 1000% percent with the author. real lol @ his article. The man has the movie pegged exact with lines like: As impressed as I was with Avatar's CG graphics, the script just seemed like an unimaginative blend of Dances with Wolves, Pocahontas, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, and The Smurfs.

Smurfs yes, lol. He just needed to add Tarzan to the list.

I'm just looking forward badly now to Alice In Wonderland in 3D - trailer in 3D makes it sooooo much more appealing. Perfect example for those who have or are planning to watch in 3D - look out for the Cheshire cat. :)

Seen it. Here's my take:

1st thing - Must be seen in 3D while it's possible. Don't listen to some random guy who probably didn't clean his spectacles and complained about it being dark. See it for yourself (try to sit in the middle of your row [in the middle section of the theater] if you can).
2nd - I'm just repeating what has been said a million times. Cliche story. VERY cliche. Nothing is going to surprise you. Also a bit cheesy at times. The love story is unfortunately not as epic as Titanic's. In fact it's somewhat disneyish. Also James Horner's score was a mixed bag. I loved the theme music but the 'tribal' singing wasn't my thing lol.
3rd thing - the cliche story does not spoil the experience. Cameron's expert directing hasn't changed. Attention to detail is prevalent in this movie. AMP suit design, aircraft design, all the details of Pandora, just a joy to marvel at. Great cinematography. Action scenes were excellent as expected.

So overall, Avatar is still mind blowing despite it's flaws. My pick for movie of the year.

maybe the cliche story didn't spoil it for you but it earned a brisk three point deduction from me.

20 minutes of cliche story development ain't bad.....but two hours of it?????

$%#@ me

I'd split it and make two movies yes.

An hour and a half high octane action flick called "Tales of Pandora: War of the Worlds" (For the guys)

An hour and a half slow ass cliche story riddled bush love affair called "Tales of Pandora: Looking for Love in the Wrong Place" (For the girls)

sheesh

Definitely agreed. One of my favourite review sites (Spill) did a review today, and it got the equivalent of Very Good (Full Price)...all that was missing from it being great (Better Than Sex) was the aforementioned storyline issues and fairly cheesy dialogue.

Btw, for the Colonel, I was heavily reminded of the look of Sarge from Quake 3 Arena...Wyatt, did you get any similar sentiments? :)
