Hmm never thought about game reviews this way, in some ways it actual hurts developers when used as a studio performance indicator...

"Metacritic is the bane of any long-lived developer's existence," said Mark Long, founder and co-CEO of Zombie Studios, which has made over 28 games. "There's nowhere to go but down as your titles average in over time. It's easy to be a winner on Metacritic if you've only shipped two games, which is the crux of the problem. Metacritic is great if you are talking about a single game or movie. But publishers' use of the site to grade a studio's performance over time is a real problem."

That is real world for you! Do not sit around and expect everything you do to be the best or one of. Failures make developers who they are!

It isn't disappointing in the direction developers are thinking. It is disappointing in the direction gamers are thinking. Too much influence from "reviewers" with no intelligence, knowledge or understanding of actual development. It is not just "code" or "art" but the culmination of that, money, contract, design, theory and upward management that makes a game.
