Low fares airline REDjet has suspended all flights around the Caribbean as of 11.59 last night.
The suspension of flights is "until further notice", the Barbados-based airline said in a statement last night.
REDjet chief executive Ian Burns said despite the airline performing well, the company could no longer continue to provide a service.
Burns said REDjet was not subsidised with assistance from any government.
The airline started operating from Barbados to Trinidad in July last year and offered flights to nine destinations around the Caribbean.
"Our aircraft and our dedicated staff are performing extremely well and we are willing and able to continue to provide affordable transport across the Caribbean and beyond, but we cannot," he said.
The company said it is hopeful it will receive State assistance to allow it to get recently approved routes established

"Unlike the heavily subsidised airlines that serve the region, REDjet does not receive any assistance...We have seen other carriers drastically cut their fares in an effort to shut down REDjet and return to high fares and business as usual with no regard to the negative impact on travellers. Unlike us, they do not have to be profitable to stay in business," the statement said.
REDjet advised that passengers booked on flights from today should contact the call centre 24 hours before scheduled departure time for an update on their flight status. Those affected will be offered refunds or the option to travel with REDjet upon commencement of services.
Further announcements regarding services will be made on Monday.
The airline maintained that the suspension was only a "temporary cessation of flights".

Well, it was good while it lasted, but the business model just wasn't sustainable. Caribbean people just don't travel in the numbers required that would have made RedJet profitable.

In all honesty, whenever I ask anyone if they wanna travel with red jet, they give me some story about how the planes not good blah blah blah...
It seems to me that in trinidad, if the price not high, the flight not safe...

This is what happens when you don't have the financial aid from any government. The mere fact they lasted THIS long, kudos! Take away government funding from Caribbean Airlines nuh, no more shiney ATR 72-600s and no 767-300 to Gatwick.

Jamaican and our government cock blocked Red jet when they wanted to start up operations and Red jet seems to be paying the price now. Yes I will admit it is not the best choice of aircraft but beggars can't be choosers. Oh well, let us hope that Red Jet can get back in the air and jam the competition!

Right now they singing the 'government subsidy' song. Rock so eh RedJet.

They talk a big game when they came on the scene, and a lot of people predicted that this very thing would happen.

I don't think any Caricom government ready to chest-trap the expense of subsidising yet another airline, so RedJet's days as a Caribbean carrier might very well be numbered.

They have dropped a bit to compete but imo, it was only going to happen sooner or later. The fuel subsidies are ridiculous and they probly spend more money on one flight than they earned in 2.

Its a shame tho, i was looking at making a trip some time later this year and now Caribbean Airlines gonna dig out my eye...

To also add, the equipment they use (MD-88) Those JT-8D engines drink fuel even on short hop flights, they require a lot of maintenance due to age and then the cost to run the company. I think one aspect they should change to ensure efficient running is their aircraft. Boeing 737-800s like what CAL use, even Dash 8s just to start and when the ball gets rolling, upgrade their equipment

Such upgrades would result in huge capital costs that probably aren't justifiable at this time unfortunately.
