WP 8.1: You will be able to name Cortana whatever you want

Turns our if you find the name Cortana a bit awkward you will be able to name your Digital Assistant Jane or Joe pretty easily.

According to Xone, who frequents WPWorld.pl, and who posted some more information about the service, not only will the assistant have a different name in different regions, but end users will also be able to rename it whatever they want.

Users will also be able to activate the assistant hands-free, much like Google’s “Hello Google” phrase on the Moto X, but users will be able to configure this key phrase to whatever they prefer.

In an unrelated titbit, Xone revealed that Action Center will support 5 toggles for services like WIFI and screen rotation on 5 inch + screens, and 4 on smaller screens.

Cortana is good for marketing, but if I have to be activating my voice features by saying, "hello Cortana" ...aint nobody got time for that, ill be quickly renaming that to something shorter and easier to say.

Boy I find out bout d update being live whiles driving to work. I update when I reach only to realize is 2 updates. So had to initiate d 2nd one late. But I'm on it now though!

Yeah I have cortana. Im still digging up in the features but so far it looking like it finally on par with Android in terms of features and customizations.

Ok, I fix it, my phone being from the UK put the language as English UK even though my region was US. I just added English USA and deleted the UK language , restarted, and boom!, Cortana!

That was retarded. Not so much into Cortana though but the rest of features are great. What I like is that even with this old hardware I feel no need to upgrade. All 8.1 features I care about present and accounted for.

The flow keyboard is a welcome improvement and that install directly to SD card already paying off. No longer limited by internal storage for apps.

This is something that Android had back in the day but they removed for some stupid reason.

Cortana is only officially supported in US right now, that's why all these shenanigans to get it.

And Cortana for me mite be relegated for quick reminds and features. I like the ability to just say turn off WiFi etc.
And I like d fact that I can talk to Cortana via text so don't have to actually talk to her.

Plenty new features I still going through.

I love d new notification system. Not the notification center persay, but the control over notifications.
Windows 8 when I receive an email I always get a visual notification and brief description. Always wanted that, now I can. You can completely silence whatsapp now and just have it displayed in notification center...... exactly what u wanted.

I been on WP for a reason, even with the lacking features/apps. Some of those reasons you're now aware of because you've been using them.

So for me, I always preferred WP anyway.
So that combined with the fact that it getting all the features it's been missing. Just makes WP that much better to me.

Soon android men go can't bump they gum anymore. Because WP will have feature/app parity.

WP9 is when things go get rel intense for this competition. I expect MS to have solved all their qualms by then.
Haven't checked out 8.1 proper yet, but I doubt they got everything. But I know they get a lot.

Universal WP8.1/W8 apps already in the Windows Phone Store

Microsoft has started delivering rapidly on the promise of Universal apps on Windows Phone 8.1, with a number of cross-platform apps already showing up.

The apps, which are labelled “Made for Windows Phones and Windows PCs”, allows users to pay once and install on both platforms.

This can already be seen in one app, Halo: Spartan Assault, which if you purchased it for the phone can be installed on your PC and vice versa.

Other apps with early support include Shazam, Hexic, Microsoft Mahjong, Microsoft Solitaire Collection, Wordament.

The feature will increase the value of apps for Windows Phone and Windows 8 users, and make them more likely to pay for them, which should ultimately help developers make more money.

Just tired it and it works. Just bought the 5$ halo Spartan assault for free on WP cause I had previously bought it on surface some time ago, gg MS, one ring to rule them all. Bring on universal apps!

Yall might find these helpful....Tip 3 looks pretty useful, with Google Now I'm not sure if you can do that, it just learns from your previous searches, can't manually add topics to follow.

Eight tips for Windows Phone 8.1 that you may not know about

With Windows Phone 8.1 being released today to those participating the Preview for Developers program, there is a lot to chew on. I wrote about the OS in a 5,500 word review and overview, but there’s so much in there, I figured you folks needed some quick tips on features you may not have known about!

One

Pin Battery Saver + Storage Sense to the Start screen – In 8.1, the Battery Saver and Storage Sense programs are now listed in the App listing. That also means you can pin them to your Start screen! What’s more, Microsoft made them Live tiles and the battery icon actually reflects your current battery status, where Storage Sense will show you in numbers your current space usage, including on your SD card.

Swipe down on the Action Center for detailed status – Do you like the battery icon but want to see it in an actual percentage? Swipe down on the Action Center (from the top) and you can get detailed data on your battery, the date, carrier connection status and more

Three

Tell Cortana what news you want to follow – After doing a search through Cortana, you can scroll down to see ‘Update me on this news topic’. Click that and Cortana will start tracking that topic for you, showing any new news in your Daily Glance. The data will be saved in Cortana’s Notebook, under Interests > News. Tap on the item to toggle shows news on that topic and to enable notifications when there are new stories. You can also pin the topic to your Start screen.

Four

Enable weather in Calendar – The new native calendar app can you show the weather forecast right in the calendar! Simply head to Calendar > Settings > Preferences to enable and start seeing the day’s high temperature and weather icon. Great for planning ahead!

Five

Swipe down on the Lock screen to access the Action/Notification center – Even when PIN you can still pull down the Action Center in 8.1, without having to unlock the Lock screen. You can toggle the Quick action buttons and even dismiss alerts, but if you want to read anything, you’ll need to enter in that PIN

Six

See which Apps auto updated – On Windows Phone 8.1, you can have apps auto update for you. Head to Store > Downloads > History to see what changed!

Seven

Scan barcodes/QR codes again – If using Cortana, you lost the ability to scan barcodes through Bing Vision. However, you can still access this app/service via your Camera > Lenses > Bing Vision. It’s not as convenient, but it works.

Eight

Auto-download images in email – Many email clients block the downloading of images in email due to security and privacy concerns (images are often just links back to the website,which could be malicious). But in 8.1, you can head into Mail > Settings > Always download full message and internet images and get your images back, automatically
