Phone Protection
« on: September 02, 2012, 09:03:12 PM »
I'm looking for a screen protector for my new phone and as usual online has too many mixed reviews from foreigners.

I'm looking for some local input on the protectors used in the Caribbean.

Do or Do not? What type to look for? Top recommended brands that sort of thing, even if you are relating it to your personal phone.

Which unit in question?

I got an elcheapo for my droid.

Not really impressed with it, does the job....but I'd prefer the pure experience of my phone's native screen.

Only reason I have it is to preserve retail value. As the plan is to upgrade regularly and sell off the used device.

Last thing you want is for the screen to be all dinged and scratched such that it doesn't fetch a decent price.

Can't take any chances cause I've got young kids in the house who LOVE to use the phone as a toy. lol

Ahh i was just on my way back to change the focus of the topic more towards protective gear for mobile devices in general.

The phone i'm looking at is an HTC One X though. I understand the construction of the case and GG2 but i still want to reduce any potential damage to screen or body. More geared towards me keeping the phone for a longer period of time than for resale value.

My current phone is a low end device, was just a taste of the android family package, looking for something more powerful and durable. My phone is less than a year old and the buttons are already giving issues.

Zagg Invisible Shields are what I swear by.

I'm currently waiting on the new 'HD' version for my phone to arrive.
Having used a lot of their regular shields in the past, I'll update this thread with my impressions when I get it.

Zagg is the way to go if you want total protection of the device with the highest grade of material

Boxwave also makes high quality protectors without liquid application

AND I bought a seidio for my current device HTC Vivid and it works like a charm doesn't scratch made of high quality materials as well

and I put it on in literally 5 seconds without any air bubbles and no messy liquid solution (zagg)

I myself stand behind Seidio cases, they are truly great cases. I have dropped my phone countless times and it is still dent and scratch free.
Pros:
Great Protection
Reasonably Priced
Easy to Remove
Multiple cover configurations(hard cases, gel cases, extended battery cases, etc...)
Cons:
Adds a bit of bulk to device
Dust magnets especially along the edges protecting the screen for the hard cased configs.

Otter box is another good brand but a bit restrictive for my liking,
Pros:
Best Protection possible in my opinion
Stylish
Cons:
Price
Not so easy to remove, depending on device.
Adds extra bulk to phone.
Dust magnets especially along the edges protecting the screen

If you go run of the mill cases off of amazon get a gel/gummy case, read the reviews is the best advice. I have been surprised by some of those cheap screens that have performed better than the premium cases.

XO-Skins are what i use. I started with the regular dry apply screen protectors which work really well but start to peel after a while which then need replacing, this sucks as they only provide you with only once shield. I then saw their wet apply shields, I was a bit skeptic at first as you have to get your phone wet, but after applying this thing and letting it dry, I don't think ill be going back to the dry screen protectors anytime soon.

That Zagg invisible shield is catching my eye. I'm a little wary of the liquid application as i'll most likely do it myself and i don't want this to be a learning process lol.

Anyone have any experience with Armor Suits? - http://www.armorsuit.com/ they look to be offering invisible, full body protection, thought it's wet application as well.

Diztronic has good quality cases, and they usually come bundled with an equally good screen protector. Just bought one recently for my Galaxy Nexus, very affordable too.

Don't really care much about the screen protector (though I should?) but I have an Otterbox commuter case for my Atrix 2 and it's worked excellently so far, a few falls, no damage to phone itself, feels and looks good.

I always use a Zagg protector for the screen only.   The phone itself goes into a case.

Right now I'm using an el-cheapo 'Acase Superleggera' on my S3,  which is suprisingly well made, given it's price.

What I really want is one of those 'Urban Armor Gear' cases.

The Zagg shields are a royal PITA to install properly, but once you get it on correctly, the screen protection is second to none.
The only black mark against them, is that they tend to become slightly discoloured after 8 or 9 months, and you have to change em.   The newer 'HD' version isn't supposed to have this problem, so we'll see.

I am also running an elcheapo diztronic (which came with the elcheapo screen protector bundled)

Very reasonably priced and it protect the phone handsomely.

No physical buttons on the Galaxy Nexus to "wear out" or fade.

My main criteria was that the case be particularly light and low profile. Seeing how huge the nexus is, didn't want to add additional bulk.

This is the unit in question: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0065PGWQ0/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00

@ Arc - when that new shield arrives, post some before and after pics and a review if you can.

@TW - the Diztronic for my phone looks good. I'm torn between this and the Boxwave atm.

Still undecided about the screen protector as i'm sceptical about the liquid installation but the dry installs seem to be for the screen only and not the entire face of the phone.

Wet apply will also be for the screen alone.  What I think you want is a full body shield,  this would be pointless if your also going to be getting a case. Best bet is to get a screen protector that covers the whole screen or the majority of the screen,  then get a case that over laps,  which they pretty much all do, this will allow for the perfect combination of protection.

What i meant was the face of the phone, many of the dry protectors are stopping short i.e. just above the capacitive buttons, don't want to feel any difference between screen and buttons.

I'm wrong though cos the skinomi drytech seems to be covering buttons as well, but that one was the full body.

...which is why I prefer the Zagg shields.

It's either whole-body, or whole-face... No compromises.  No 'stopping short'.
For some devices with home buttons (like the S2), they even cater for the home button as well.

Got the Urban Armor Gear case yesterday.
This case is the shiznit.  It adds almost no extra bulk or weight.  Polycarbonate on the outside...softer rubber on the inside.

...and it looks absolutely bad...ASS!!!
Friend of mine got one for his white S3, and I have to admit...the black-on-white contrast looks better than I thought it would.

Well, I guess it did happen...  :laughing7:

installed the Zagg Invisible shield HD on my S3 today.

Having used their shields on just about EVERY smartphone I've ever owned, I can definitely
say this is a step up.  It's no longer the stretchy, textured material that I'd gotten used to,
but this one is a LOT smoother, and feels a little more 'robust', if that's the right word.
The feel of it just screams 'quality'.

In short... you need this.

...oh and if you buy direct from Zagg, they may give you the option to purchase
a pair of Zagg Smartbuds for $10 US more.

I have just ONE thing to say about the audio quality:  OMFG!!!   :awesome:

This case may not be the best out there, but based on user feedback on XDA, I decided to leave out Otterbox this time...

Totally impressed with it thus far.
Don't think I'll be bothering with the Otterbox again.

S3 owners...yeah...you need this too.  :laughing7:

...but don't take my word for it...take Roger's...
