Jolla Sailfish Mobile OS detailed......successor of Meego
« on: November 21, 2012, 01:00:37 PM »

MeeGo refugee Jolla has demonstrated its new Sailfish OS today, as well as announcing a deal with ST-Ericsson to run the platform on its mobile chips, and a carrier deal with Finland’s DNA. Revealed back in October, Sailfish focuses on “effortless multitasking” with the ability to run multiple apps simultaneously and even interact with them directly from the homescreen view. It also attempts to cut down on the taps, swipes, and pulls involved in checking status updates and notifications, and promises easy compatibility with Android apps.

The homescreen-level interaction, Jolla suggests, means Sailfish will be the most streamlined and speedy OS for users to navigate through. For instance, they’ll be able to pause a song or end an ongoing call without having to open the respective apps themselves: you can swipe a finger across the music player app thumbnail to the left to pause playback, or to the right to skip to the next track.

Sailfish also has a so-called “Pulley Menu” for “fast and effortless interaction” and the open-source SDK is already being fleshed out. It consists of components including Qt, the Mer Core, and the Linux kernel, and can turn its hand to duties on smartphones, tablet, smart TVs, in-car systems, and other applications. Jolla will have a copy of the version shown off today “very soon.”

According to Jolla, many Android apps will run on Jolla devices with no modifications. However, there’ll need to be tweaks made if best use of Sailfish is desired “If you want to take advantage of all UI and other features of Sailfish OS and make yourapplications fast,” the Sailfish SDK wiki explains, ”you can port your applications to native QT/QML.” That’s the full version of Qt, too, along with HTML5, though there won’t be DRM support.

Jolla also has its first carrier onboard, with DNA set to get the first Sailfish-based devices and be part of what the company says will be “a network of partners” around the OS “during the coming year.”

Jolla isn’t content with just one chipset partner, however. “ST-Ericsson’s NovaThor platform combined with Sailfish OS will enable vendors to bring highly competitive mobile products to the market. We welcome other players in the mobile industry to join and contribute to this game changing movement” Jolla CEO Marc Dillon said today. “We also target to announce other chipset provider partnerships soon.”

This sounds very similar to Tizen

http://www.extremetech.com/computing/129073-tizen-1-0-hands-on-can-samsung-and-intels-mobile-os-compete-with-android

Strange that someone would pick up meego after it was deemed a failure.

Just goes to show, one man's trash....

Personally, I'm not pleased with either of these making their way to the marketplace.

Think we've got enough major players with Ios, Android and Wp8.

Wish them the best of luck competing against those.

but meego was crap because they never bothered to finish it so that is why I'm interested now that its finished .....but it's too little to late  there's just no more room in there unless their devices are ridiculousy cheap or something for the entry / lower end market or something

Yeah, and I expect yesterday's flagship androids to fill that space....of cheap capable phones.

Everytime a new generation is upon us, you see everyone selling off their old models for cheap.

That grey market is going to get progressively bigger and make it really hard for a second rate device to flourish.

For example, come Christmas, Nexus 4 immc....and someone is going to get my still excellent Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Instead of buying a Solla Jailfish phone.

You mean the Galaxy Nexus that lacked alot of things ( to name a few) :

Camera resolution is not on par with the rest of the high-end dual-core competition
Below average battery life
Lacks a dedicated camera key
No microSD card slot
No mass-storage mode (some files don't show up in MTP mode)
No FM radio

......(troll)

Not really looking at marketshare but at the software that is interesting in itself ..... to see how they've developed the platform

and what they did for it to stand out against the established mobile OS's of Android, iOS and WP......if anything substantial....at all

If you think a galaxy nexus is "lackin" then you need to spend some time with a blackberry.

The nexus is a very solid phone for the price. It was then @ debut and it will be especially affordable as a used/hand me down device.

The new nexus 4, likewise.

These are not us$800 phones. Remember that in your specs showdown.

Value for money ftw.

Then fact that they will run the latest android code for a few iterations to come is more salt in the Jolla wound.

My nexus jus got upgraded to 4.2 ota. Hassle free.

The nexus 4 now supports LTE so right now it is hard to beat the price to bangage ratio.

I get that you like your phone that's great fact is..... for the price it is still lacking....

It is basically a dumbed down Galaxy S II Skyrocket which could be bought for around the same price at launch

The Nexus 4 on the other hand is the so far the BEST bang for your buck because LG actually put the best hardware out @ present into it

and is actually Equal to the Optimus G making it the first worthy flagship since the Nexus 1 if you want to get all technical .....

I mean your phone is no slouch and It is one of two Samsung devices I like..... but it isn't this excellent thing you claim it is .....

Anyway as I said before I'm just interested to see what they've done with the OS because it had alot of potential if it was properly done by nokia

at the time when android was still a steaming pile of rubbish back in 2010 it could have been a solid contender but I really think it has no chance now...

I doubt I would use it but I would still like to see it in action..... you get what I'm saying.....

wrong again.

Excellence is relative.

My Palm Pilot was Excellent

My SonyEriccson P900 was Excellent

My BlackBerry Bold was Excellent

My Samsung Galaxy Nexus is Excellent.

It met and then exceeded my expectations.

You may have really high standards and more power to you....but you shouldn't overextend and say that the device isn't excellent by "my" standards.

The value proposition of these phones in the "used/hand me down" market is the key point here for Jolla.

At US$350 a brand new Galaxy Nexus doesn't make sense because the Nexus 4 is here.

Raising the bar once more for what you can expect from a budget priced Android. These represent an excellent value proposition.

Unlike the flagship phones costing US$550 - $800 (which will have all the features you listed above if not most)

As mentioned before, the Nexus 4 is going to be my new phone. Jolla won't find a space in the industry (imo) because when people like me upgrade, the market is going to be flooded with cheap and extremely capable android devices like the galaxy nexus.

They may have stood a chance two years ago....but to catch this runaway train now? Not happening.

We'll soon see though, if my prophecy is right or not. Give 'em a couple years.

They may find a niche somewhere else, due to the scope of the project. Maybe land a big contract with Toyota for an In Dash Entertainment interface.

Yes I get what you're saying if you read what I said I agree with you in the market perspective......

but the point of this thread was just to look at the software not really to delve into forecasts

and it wasn't my standards is was comparing it to its the fact of the matter it maybe excellent to you

but I was bringing you back to reality for some reason you refuse to see fact in favour of opinion ....

I can't do anything about that  ... I can't understand why you keep comparing the two if you read my replies

I agree with you so I dunno why you keep repeating yourself .... the only thing we could do is wait and see

...but as I previously said I really have no expectations market wise I am just interested to see what they did with the software.....

Some people troll for trolling sake. Thought you were do in that. Good to see I was mistaken.

As for market . Its important otherwise what's the point reading about stillborn software? Lol
