Wyatt, i modified yuh message to embed d youtube vid.

Now my comments:

It's hard to keep track but who theif who ideas here? becuase alot of that stuff looks like windows 8 and wp8.
And the vision is Microsoft's vision of 1 platform 3 screens. Ubuntu's implementation is alot more open and flushed out. But alot of d geature use and the way they're used etc, already exsists on windows 8 metro.

But i have to admit, ubuntu's implementation has me interested.
But seeing that Microsoft is headed in the same direction, and already has the groundwork laid. And go follow up on that with windows 9 and wp9, i beg the question of how much of a chance ubuntu has.

More competition is always good, but with Apple Google and MS battling it out, a stray nuke may go ubuntu's way, it going to be rel tough for them to be sucessfull in this market. But i like what i seeing thus far.

Wish MS would take a few of the trimmings i see there, and implement it into windows 9/wp9.
But all in all good stuff.

So yea, anybody know if ubuntu had this first, and MS theif it, or is MS and ubutnu copy dem? Everybody copying everybody these days, its really hard to tell anymore lol.

I must say this looks SOOO bloody good I want this to succeed so bad. Concept is very cool. I wish Canonical allll the best.

I hate to be a negative nancy though...I  think the mobile market is already sufficiently saturated. After the wild success of existing platforms, is there really a piece of the pie remaining for anyone new?

I am even less encouraged by the fact that there's no trace of support for this yet in either a viable eco system or carrier support. Ubuntu mobile will undoubtedly find a place in a niche market but little more than that i'm afraid. If it doesnt take off and make money sadly it would disappear.

nah once it finds it's niche the community will keep it alive. It would be nice to install aircrack and couple other pen-testing tools so i could have a nice all in one device.

thanks @ messiaah

@ Awesome, absolutely agreed @ market suturation. Even long standing stalwarts getting squeezed out, let alone a new comer with no pedigree.

Luckily, Ubuntu's middle name is niche. They would be quite happy with any sort of traction. Their business model does not mandate world domination like Apple and Microsoft's.

If they ever become mainstream, that would be an epic achievement in of itself.

That said......I would love for this to succeed in every and all imaginable ways.

Future is bright for opensource. Bright indeed. First Steam comes to ubuntu and now this.

BOOM

Unlike desktops doh, niche phne market kinda nonexistent, phones are all about ecosystem, I dint see Ubuntu competing there, and without carrier support, it dead. Not even niche.

OEMs go hadda start selling phone hardware like pcs for niche to work. But currently d business model does go like this for phones:

OEMs make the phones, carriers are the customer, carriers resell to their customers.
Variation of that same hardware is sold unlocked to individuals.

If carriers eh back ubuntu phone, it go be another webos all over again, no niche, juss dead.

ubuntu is niche in terms of they don't need to hit a market to exist.

In a way, they could never die. Like most opensource software.

It just has to be.

No business model, no capital objectives, no share holder value to be assured, nada.

Once this is a reality, even Canonical themselves could fold up and it will exist forever in the spirit of FOSS.

I heard ubuntu mobile not coming out till 2014, i thought rim was late to the party, but ubuntu mobile is the poster child for too late oui. That product rel dead way before it start yes. Not like it doing anything revolutionary that go still be relevant ah whole year later. And they done put all they cards on the table, competition going to gobble that up and shit out d remains in no time atal.

like you ain't read a word I post?

They don't need to be on time or anything like that. Ubuntu doesn't follow the traditional corporate mold.

Just a passion for open source software. That is all.

I read everything you say, i just dont agree with it. For a product to be "niche" it has to have some sort of adoption rate, niche being a very limited adoption rate, select few individuals that using d product and it have a small market for it.

Niche is like them insanely expensive ass 10k$ headphones i does be drooling over, or some obscure tech that not mass market, but have a niche market for it.

Ubuntu phone not qualifying as a niche product in my eyes.

forget the word niche, focus on the word open source and see it as the opposite of Microsoft/Nokia/Apple/Dell/etc...

Same rules do not apply

Android is already built on Linux and is great by itself and you already have all the apps and support why would you want to move to Ubuntu built on the same platform its not any great leap towards anything just some usability tweaks and it looks nice and that's everything they stated you can already do with android and android is already open source so what is the point ?...... this will end up being like Sailfish and BB10 and Bada just a drop in the Ocean that is full if droids atm and to reiterate the point i quote awesome except for the niche thing...

I am even less encouraged by the fact that there's no trace of support for this yet in either a viable eco system or carrier support. Ubuntu mobile will undoubtedly find a place in a niche market but little more than that i'm afraid. If it doesnt take off and make money sadly it would disappear.

this is like when Nokia tried niche with MeeGo it just doesn't make sense in the current smartphone environment. I wont say that I'm not interested to see how it turns out but I cant see it going anywhere just like Sailfish from Jolla its a good idea but just not right now....

100% agreed. Technically there's nothing stopping anyone from building an Android launcher that does every single user interface tweak that was in that demo...and if that is done, you have some of that nice UI design plus all your regular eco system support.

Windows Phone is an alternative, BB for the die hards and iphone for the so called elite. Android is so open and so limitless in its potential and not to mention so firmly rooted in the world's mind that combined with the other platforms already available, anything new is going to have a very very very very hard time.

Still, that isnt to say that other players should not try. I want to see everything and what they have to offer just in case someone comes with something mindblowing.

Perfectly said

And the beauty of open source, is that they can do it without the stranglehold of having to meet a company's bottom line.

If at the end of the day, all that happens is innovations made here are incorporated into Android....that is still a success in of itself.

No CEOs need be fired for it.
