Will Consoles Replace Stand-alone DVD, Blu-Ray or whatever comes next?

and it made me wonder, more and more console's are growing leaps and bounds faster than the current 'dvd/blu-ray players'
I was wondering, with the prices of cutting edge format players being consistently higher than consoles which seem to have stuck at a $500 pricepoint (on launch).
Also considering that both prices 'degrade' around the same rate. As the older population gets 'phased out' in lieu of more tech savvy adults.

Will the Stand-alone player go bye bye?

They have already been replaced.

Consoles, SmartTVs and HTPCs have stomped all over stand alone players.

They are a dying breed and only bought by people who don't know better at this stage.

You will notice with the new generation of HTPCs and Consoles, that they have a decidedly AV component look and finish.

That is not by chance.

They are squarely aiming to be the centerpiece of your home entertainment setup and NOT just the gaming component. This strategy will leave little room for those stand alone dvd / blu ray players.

There's no reason to buy a standalone player anymore, unless there's a specific feature that can't be replicated on a HTPC (especially if said HTPC will be cheaper).
