[Build Log] From Chiller to MO-RA
« on: July 05, 2013, 12:12:48 AM »
I've  built a gaming rig in 2012 using a chiller as the cooling system .

See here :

Rig:

MH-LCSx12

Vid:

The chiller has since developed a leak internally  that's  a bit difficult to get too.
So I've decided to switch back to  a traditional  radiator until I'm up to the task of fixing the chiller.

Here's a mini build log of the switch over.

Watercooling BO-RA 3 arrived today and work has commenced. Still waiting on my fans though.

hard core business

Looks more like something for an SUV than a PC. lol

On a side note, I have always avoided water cooling for the fear of leaks.

Sobering to see even the high end stuff fall victim to same

I don't get leaks in my pc, years of water cooling you can easily avoid leaks. you just need to be careful, and make sure washers everywhere it needs to be, and make sure not to over-tighten etc.

In this case, it seems the bottle housing the heat exchanger deep inside d rad is compromised. And the pressure from my 2 mad man pumps so strong it forcing water out from there. 1 Pump is fine no leaks, as soon as I kick in that 2nd pump for ah 5 minutes, water in meh tail.

If it was something simple like a radiator, I woulda have that fixed long time. But to get to that, I have to break the copper seal, so which go mean getting ah AC man to re-gas the unit, etc etc etc.

If u going traditional rad, I wouldn't worry too much about leaks for an experienced man like you.

And yea, that rad bigger than I thought, d thing nearly big like my PC.

I was like you once...  :laughing7:

...but then the lure of extreme overclocking and nasty CPU temps kicked that last psychological barrier down.

I realized it's pretty hard to get a leak if you know what you're doing.

Still doesn't negate the need to do proper leak-testing though.

^^ Yup.

As much as I don't get leaks, toiletpaper does be all up in that bitch when leak testing lol.

But it rel hard to get a leak in true once u take your time.

If I had built that chiller from scratch it woulda be rel hard to get a leak. But given the nature of the problem, I mite have to end up doing just that. Go see how this rad performs though.

Chiller rated to dissipate 750W  of heat. I hear this rad you can sqeeuze 1000w of dissipation out of it. Don't know how true that is, hard to imagine a regular rad out-performing a chiller. But then again I never run that chiller at max potential. We go see how it goes.

Performance-PCs didn't have meh fans and order d thing from d manufacture , big watery stueps.
So I going to jerry rig some smaller 120mm onto it later and see how it performs, I find 5 spare 120s so far, so we go see.

Change your thread title.

I seeing 'MO-RA' on the thing...and I looked far and wide.  There's no such thing as a 'BO-RA' rad.  :laughing7:

Well you see d size of my chiller? This new rad is a downgrade in size lolol. but time I load up the....gulp....18 fans.....and slap on the side grills, we go see. The feet and external grills makes it look nice and neat though. So should look good next to machine. Chiller did pretty ok sitting in the back of PC.

Fans have not reached, so went on a quest scrapping old machines trying to muster up whatever fans i can find to use in the mean time. Only found 5 120mm fans and 2 200mm. Rad is made for 140mm so had to jerryrig the 120s on.

Also, introduction of the mora3 into my loop has dropped my flowrate by about half compared to when using the chiller. I would highly recommend a minimum of 2 pumps when using this rad.

hopefully ill get my fans in the next few days to complete the build.

I notice you have quick disconnects in your loop.. Does this help with draining the loop? And if so how do you drain the loop is it from the quick disconnect itself? I am upgrading my water cooling loop and I want to have a really easy drainage system.

I have multiple points I drain d loop from, inside d machine between d gpu and res, I have a drain hose coming off with a shutoff valve. So when I want to drain water from d res, I juss plop that cable out and turn on d valve, and gg. Drains everything from d rad. Ill take a pic today for u to see.

D quick disconnects I use for easily connecting / disconnecting external components, Rad, chiller etc. I also have some extras on spare hose. So I could independently bleed d machine and rad separate. And yes i use them to easily drain d rad as well. Quick disconnects are epic. So easy, so seamless, and the version 3, jah, sweet. But they are expensive, so i only use them where I Get maximum benifit. But if I cud, id use them through my entire loop. Would be nice to just disconnect my GPUs and take them out d system for instance without draining anything. No leaks no nothing, just disconnect and remove.

When I upgrade next year, mite invest in some more qdc

Hmm I see.. I look forward to that pic of the drain valve .. I now see the added benefit of quick disconnect.. For instance for internal blocks and such I can have quick disconnects to each block or rad and if I want to individually and properly clean each one I can disconnect each one and carefully clean the respective block or radiator so my components life will be expanded.. Hmmm this will be a phase two in my next water cooling project.. Thanks a lot for the perspective much appreciated.

Yup, that's exactly d benefit, but like I said, expensive to hit every Component. If u talking just a CPU then it worth it. If u talking, gpu, chipset, memory, d price starts to add up lol. So I only use it for external components. But I was just thinking, if I had qdc on my reservoir, could have remove that whole thing and give it ah proper clean easy, without draining meh entire loop, then just fill it, plug it back in, and press go.

Go link pic this evening.

And when ur next water project, please post pics, it have rel men under low doing water but no pics posted...would be good to see water more prominent on d site, encourage others to dive in. (Arc, yUh could bless we with some pics too, capt awesome etc, d'oh even know who on liquid.) Should we make a page to list all d liquid rigs on gatt?
