my sentiments exactly.

but this is the 1st remember. There will be hope for the 2nd, 3rd...etc...

ESWC and WCG (The two largest gaming events) don't carry COD, SOF nor DOTA as official E-Sport disciplines.

Our hope was for them to gain ground at the regional level but even that was dashed. (The league is attached officially to the ESWC)

Ofcourse this doesn't say anything for the National level. These are favourites in Trinidad and so they shall remain until the masses play (say) different.

Expect local events and such to cater to these games.

Just don't expect to fly out to France or Korea to play in a SOF / COD finals, as they aren't part of the regional league nor the main events in Paris / Italy.

Check out the main events for those below:

ESWC 2006 (Finals in Paris, France)

Question.  Who came to the decisions as it pertains to which games are played vs which aren't?  Who is this "Body"?

By all means I could accept such a condemnation of one of the best fighting games in history by some ignorant person/s and/or country/ies but I see that link you posted Baego was to a French site.  Last I've heard, the French love their SF3.

What's with that?

no my friend,

the french do not.

The governing body is the ESWC, as I've mentioned before.

Short for Electronic Sports World Cup. A video game based tournament not unlike the FIFA World Cup. Arguably the largest e-sport event in the world.

The company underwriting the event is "Games-Services" out of France.

and no, they do not support Street Fighter as an official discipline.

Nor Tekken mind you. Nor any fighting game. (which sucks)

As if that was not bad enough, the Koreans don't seem to care for it much either.

Their World Cyber Games don't have Street Fighter nor Tekken supported.

The only fighting game they have is DOA 4. A microsoft xbox 360 marketing move I'm sure. One that is welcome though since it gets the fighting genre some good exposure.

We lobbyed best we good.

Hope that clears the air for ya.

The French don't like SF period you say.  You know I'd be a little tempted to blindly beleive that but I don't think that could ever be true.  In France they host an international tournament every year.  Ask anyone who knows about these things and they'll tell you about Absolution.  Some of the biggest names in SF often rear their heads to take part over there.

I mean hell, even Daigo plays there.  It's either they paid him or the tournament itself was big thus meaning there was a big approval nationwide of the SF games played (Alpha3, CvS2, 3s, Guilty Gear, Soul Calibur, SSFT2)

I think that apparent distaste for fighting games is just the "officials" being blind.

By the french, I mean the french ESWC body. Speaking in the context of the league.

The ones responsible for the world league, caribbean league and the US$400,000 prize money.

It would be great if Absolution would extend it's arm out to the caribbean.

What are the details of that event? Prize money? Entrance fee? etc...

The more info we have the merrier.

Just show me the prizes for tekken 5, nfs most wanted, and Soul Calibur 3. By the way, i know imperial probably said this in a nice way already, and i know that you already explained that you have no control over this baego, but it really sucks that there isn't any street fighter games at all, really, really sucks.

yeah, we need to stir up the scene for street fighter scene a lot if it to be included on the regional and global stage.

I've seen some marked increase in activity recently with ultima, imperail and akuma coming out regularly.

If this is happening across all the GLs then it should be a shoo in for the next league season.

Interesting that statement of yours.  Tech is the only gl with such a high level of Tekken 5 participation.  I'm willing to bet money that other GLs rarely play it if ALL on any level, competitive or not.  Yet there is T5 on the roster with no effort whatsoever.

Things like that makes the situation seem biased and unfair.

The inclusion of Tekken was not our decision. It was put their by the ESWC folks. Likewise, it was on the GigaGames 2005 roster that took us to Guadeloupe. No Street Fighter Third Strike event was held their either.

Just as a reminder, when asked by the regional body, the list we submitted for consideration included Street Fighter. Both Turbo and Third Strike.

And in case you missed the memo, Tech is GATT HQ. Not only do we play games there ourselves but we also keep our fingers on the pulse of the gaming scene across the entire island. Surveys, Polls, Calls to other GLs, monitoring the carigamers site, ESWC, WCG, etc...etc...

At the last big tournament, the majority of gamers actually requested Turbo for Arena over Third Strike.

If you know of incredible Third Strike activity going on that is worthy of mention, you will do well to bring that information to our attention.

As it stands, that scene has been very low key by our estimation.

Remember, we can still run a Trinidad only league for any game we choose....so all is not lost. If that is succesful, then those figures would help convince the higher ups to include it next year.

My mistake.  I wasn't referring to the ESWC body in my last post.  I was talking about the local scene.
Oh yea, you might need to check what you're saying Baego.  You're contradicting yourself.  You said that T5 nor any fighting game was recognized as an official discipline.

Having cleared that up, you'd have to agree that there is no intense representation or pulse as you would say for any GL outside of tech for T5.

There's something I want to ask though.  Will GATT be sponsoring/sending any representative/s, to make up the competing team for the tournament in St. Marten?

ok, so you meant T5 on the "local" roster being there with no effort at all.

Well let me first state that I am a fan of almost every fighting game. From street fighter to king of fighters. So rest assured there is no bias coming from my direction.

Let me defend Tekken's "defacto" status as far as the local event roster goes. We have always used polling of some sort to determine the games that will be included.

Tekken 5 for instance, has been the most active when polled and that is even shown on the GATT site to this day.

There is a topic that stands in the Top Ten of all Topics EVER based on Tekken 5. No other fighting game can boast that.

Now GATT is still relatively small, only 2300 members out of a Trinidad population of 1.2 million. So this means there is a potential ocean of "insert your favourite game here" players just waiting for some tournament action.

Bring them to our attention and rest assured, the tournaments will be held. I guarantee.

Now this argument is not new. I have had similar discussions with NEO, RB, Fault and others in the past about it. Let me extend the olive branch now as I did to them then.....we will welcome any tournament organising effort and would do our best to facilitate it.

Put in more practical terms, if you want to host a Street Fighter 3S event, we will provide the space, the tvs, the free advert on the site and message to membership, tournament software, the works.

All you need to have is the passion to see it through. If it turns out to be a success, great.

If it flops, no big deal...it was worth a shot. Try again in a few months.

No love lost.

If you're really lucky, it would snowball into something big and culminate into your game being a big ticket tournament event on the local scene.

Now one potential drawback is that as organiser, you won't morally be able to participate. Cast those fears aside. Though it is a grey area and contentious, at present organisers are allowed to participate in all GATT sanctioned events.

How am I contradicting myself on the Tekken nor any other fighting game being an official discipline of the ESWC? That statement is fact.

As for your last question, yes we intend to field a team to the VXG event and Gigagames for that matter. We are also hosting a leg of the Fifa Caribbean Cup tour in St. Maarten. Should be pretty interesting times for e-sport in the caribbean.

Ninja:

We are working on the details. They will be posted soon, a lot of maths to be worked out. Expect polls and more to get concensus on the best way forward to some of the trickier aspects of the league. Like number of players in a team and competitive maps.

This was the contradiction I was referring to.  So you mean to tell me all I have to do is get a 3s thread on the top ten to get a tournament?  I mean if you look at the thread, its the same fools basically ranting over and over on the same thing....myself included.  Using that as a basis for anything would not reflect accurately, the number of possible participants for the proposed event.

Re: First Caribbean CyberLeague

let me explain

There are several levels of ESWC events.

there are the official disciplines (their terms, not mine)

Think of them as the official games and the ones that pay out the prize money, altogether US$400,000 worth. That's 2.4 million TT dollars, hows that for a encouragement?

These are as follows.

Counter-Strike 1.6 - PC - © Valve Software

Quake 4 - PC - © ID Software / Activision
3D action game - 1 vs. 1

Warcraft III TFT - PC - © Blizzard / VU Games
Strategic game in real time - 1 vs. 1

Gran Turismo 4 - PS2 - © Polyphony Digital / SCEE
Simulation of car racing - 1 vs. 1

Pro Evolution Soccer 5 - © Konami
Football simulation game - 1 vs. 1

Trackmania Nations ESWC - PC - © Nadeo / Focus / Deep Silver
Simulation of car racing - 1 vs. 1

Note, no fighting game.

On the regional level.....the heads at france do not dictate what events you throw, so you can for example, have a Tekken event as part of your ESWC tourney roster. Keeping in mind that it won't have any grand finals in Italy nor any official international participation from other regions. Nor any of that US$400,000 ESWC prize money.

The hope is that by drumming up support for that event on the regional level, you can make a strong case to have it included in the following years "Official Disciplines" list.

Similarly for the WCG.

An example of this was the DOTA league ran by the Asian region a few years back. It was not an official discipline but they ran it all the same and got local sponsors to take care of the prizes.

So now is it clear?

As for the thread, that was just one of the many indicators of a pretty active game. Think about it. In GATT, out of the 2300+ members, only 2% do the majority of talking. The vocal minority.

So if 8 men are ranting and raving about a game on the forum, you can expect there to be a good 100 interested in it competitively.

There were many other indicators for Tekken's success. That was just one of them.

Now don't dance around the issue. The door is open, we have the whole year ahead of us. Throw the 3S tourney and let us see how active the game is in Trinidad.

Let the participants reflect just how deserving the game is to be top tier on the local tournament scene.

I am more than eager to see this through. The question is....are you?

Thanks for the update Baego. So, that would mean that the league is not starting from May 1st, if so we were going to come up and register Saturday.

And yes, i will be looking out for updates, polls etc.
