Old GPU comparison, Quadro vs GeForce
« on: November 13, 2006, 12:39:16 AM »
Ok, here's the deal... I've got my rig in progress and temporarily using an AGP card.

Current card is a GeForce4 MX 4000 128MB

I got the option of using a Quadro FX 1000 128MB

so which of these cards will I be better off sticking in the system?

No off topic jazz about why and what not about PCI-e and why not wait...

Just wanna know which is the better GPU to use until I can afford to upgrade...

Unfortunately, I couldnt find a direct comparison for the two cards, but I did find a professional review of the Quadro here http://www.tomshardware.com/2003/03/05/swift_acquittal/index.html

See if you can make any sense of this at all, because I'm lost.

if you getting the quadro FX FREE or real cheap , go for it, otherwise its a much better option to try and find a 7600GS or 6600gt AGP. The quadro 1000 has the horsepower ( 8 pipelines) but its still based on the infamous Geforce FX core , which means any DX9 games will run at half the speed of an equivilant Radeon or Geforce 6-7 .
Plus.. quadros aren't meant for gaming , according to this page , an quadro that has identical clock speeds to a Geforce 6800GS  is slower in games.

Thanks for the links guys. I went and did some more poking around and found this article from 2003 (yeah, that's how old these GPU's are!)

New 3ds max 5 Rivalry: NVIDIA Quadro FX vs. ATI FireGL X1
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/3dsmax5-quadrofx.html

Not trying to spark any fanboys or anything ^_^

Seems the Quadro might be based on a better GPU than the GeForce4

I'll let 3dMark be my guide.

3DMark is not generally the BEST indicator of performance in games dude. Overall power yes, gaming not necessarily. You're better off looking at the in-game performence vs. the Synthetic ones.. which 3DMark is.... just thought i'd let you know. Now on the other hand... there used to be many instances where you could turn your Geforce MX cards into Quadros eh... alot of the workstation cards were spawn of desktop parts where they simply disabled features on the MX variants.. honestly look to a desktop part if yuh hadda pay, cause unless you doing CADS and stuff, the workstation card is NOT for you.

its called soft modding
go to the riva tuner page and get the soft mod from them

ive had the good will of testing a mx vs a quadro and a fire gl

and a soft modded mx into a quadro
and the result is that the soft modded card does what its supposed to in games, as well as being able to do pretty decent workstation apps.
In other words, its better for a gamer to use the mx card and soft mod it, than to use a quadro to sweat games.

Very good point as usual W1nTry, but my point is, I have the choice of using either of these two cards atm

So, I was just looking at my fellow hardware enthusiasts to guide me with their suggestions...

Even found a wkipedia entry
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NVIDIA_Quadro

Even has the reference to the PDF from disciple's post

But, it's not so much a choice (as in, I'm going out of my way to get one or the other)
it's more or less what I have at my disposal (like I said, it's available to me at the moment, until I buy a proper GPU)

Seems like I was correct as well, the Quadro FX 1000 beats the GeForce4 MX 4000

If said owner agrees to you disposing of the Dell then sure, by all means. However if you're not going to suggest to said customer that parts can be salvaged and re-used in a new machine to reduce the cost to them (eg. if there is a DVD drive in the dell, he doesn't have to purchase the new 1 with a new DVD driver etc) then I will have to say that you would be in keeping with the HORRIBLE customer service that plagues this country.

E.g. A padna of mine was asked to take a last look at a PC that 'died' some place in Moruga or something so checked it out (they coincidentally built the machine) and told the customer that it died and the entire system needed replacing. So meh padna (a friend of the family of the customer) took a last over at the machine and realized that it wasn't fried, just CPU fan ceased functioning and the CPU needed changing as it overheated and was this damaged. Replaced said CPU and voila, it was fine, without costing the customer and arm and a leg to get an entirely new machine.

I hope your not like said Moruga establishment...

LOL

I doh operate like that at all...

Customer is the "price is not a problem" type. Don't care to salvage, and besides, who'd buy a new Dell and stick in old parts?

yeah, Dell, they want a freaking Dell...

5800vs a geforce 4 mx1000?

Remember the mx 1000 is really a geforce 2 with lightning memory architecture and another texture unit. DX8/9 will install, but no pixel shading whatsoever. The fx1000 i.e retarded 5800 wont play new games, but the mx1000 would suck at old games too ;)
You'll get 4 pipes, but recall back then nvidia used 2 TMU's per pipe. For dx7 games, and early low shader games the 5800 was as fast as the 9700. It's in pimping dx9 that they asked for a whooping. slower speeds hurt but not too bad. Should handle older titles like UT 2004 at a decent clip.

If it's available then well, can't change that eh?
:P random text doesn't go out of date does it?

Thanks for everyone's views and input. I slapped in that baby over the holidays and wow, what a difference!

Even though W1nTry commented that 3dMark etc wasn't a suitable ruler by which to measure system performance, one really can't argue when the benchmark jumps from 128 to 3200+ (3dMark03)

Even learned that there is a very real difference between DDR333 (PC2700) and DDR400 (PC3200) memory...

So look out for my next thread about maximum system memory :P

Peace!
