Post by: CMR170889 on March 09, 2008, 03:46:26 PM
I need to get my hands on a Server for webhosting....anyone has any notable advice here or any parts that I can consider buying from anyone here ?
Any help is appreciated

Main need is a board that allows for multiple SATA or IDE drives
Processor or dual processors and RAM
(I more or less need the whole set up lol)
If anyone has anything laying around post or pm.

Thanks in advance

On your company lan? is this a home project?

What is the budget?

If it's for webhosting, a $5000 machine sounds paltry.

You not doing "serious" hosting then? As in for companies? Because the biggest thing to worry about is the machine failing. Not so much processing power, ram and HD space.

If it's just domestic use, as in for your own projects, then any peewat machine will do the trick and be able to handle 4 IDE drives internally (at the very least). More if you count USB2 external housings.

Ditto for SATA.

I've got a few machines laying around that will definitely fit into the $5000.00 budget, if that's the way you want to go.

How much hard drive space you looking at? A 160GB will be ok to start?

'Serious webhosting' requires that you use something more like a Dell PowerEdge rackmounted server, with a serious
industrial-type (on-line) UPS, which should be able to supply current at about 50 A or more for at least 90 minutes, AND
a backup generator.

I guess it goes without saying that $5000 just aint gonna cut it.

Indeed Crixx, it's kinda like a person wanting to get into Formula One type racing, and looking at a foreign used car dealership in the Bamboo for a suitable car to start...

The only thing I have for my PC that's anywhere near server quality is the case maybe...

Oh you have a point...Sorry...But I like to ask around here first for advice tech wise. Respect to the fact that you all know this stuff inside out.

Otherwise Thanks  :violent5: :yay:
