Title: Philosophical45's PC (Hardware and Benching)
Post by: Philosophical45 on May 01, 2008, 07:58:10 PM
Alright, since i just got my 8800gt, i say it's time for some tinkering and benchmarks:

System Specs:

Motherboard: MSI K9N PLATINUM nForce 570 Chipset
CPU: AMD Athlon 4400+ x2 @ 2.3ghz (2.7ghz OC)
RAM: 2 x 1GB Crucial Ballistix DDR2 @ 800mhz (944mhz OC)
GPU: EVGA 8800GT SUPERCLOCKED EDITION @ 700/1700/2000

(http://img379.imageshack.us/img379/9239/virtualmarktestdb4.th.png) (http://img379.imageshack.us/my.php?image=virtualmarktestdb4.png)

disappoiting i must say, my first score i fought to get, after many reboots, many fsb and multiplier adjustments, i finally found a setting that 3dmark06 didn't crash on, only to see that it gave me a score sub par to W1ntry.. interesting i must say, but after i observed the pic, i see my ht link speed was at 400, suggesting that my multiplier was set at two, GOD knows how dat set at two oui.. but after fixing that, 3dmark crashed again right after the cpu tests.. sigh.. many attempts were made, but only annoying crashes.. i finally got tired and did a virtual mark test instead, got 9600 which is not bad, but less than what i was aiming for..

the max oc i got on the cpu tho was 2.8ghz (posting and booting into windows), with just a increase in voltage to 1.4v.. after tryin to run a benchmark at this oc, i noticed significant slow down in the 3dmark tests, shocking i must say, i'm at a lost there..

(http://img120.imageshack.us/img120/1605/4400octo6.th.jpg) (http://img120.imageshack.us/my.php?image=4400octo6.jpg)

so to all you benchmarking experts in gatt, i'm not sure what caused that major slow down, and i'm willing to accept any advice y'all have to share.. right about now, my little 4400+ handles the games very well, but at benchmarking, it is the ant in the elephant cage..

Why use an 11x multiplier?  Was it not OK to use 10x ?

I think you may also have to consider that CPU temperature could also be a limiting
factor here.  Remember those Athlons put out a bit more heat than similarly clocked
Intel CPUs, and when you increase your CPU voltage, heat output increases as well.

Also, check your 'HT Link' parameter in the BIOS.  For OC'ing purposes, you may have to set it
to 4x or even 3x to squeeze out a little higher fsb.  If your RAM can take it, try upping the
voltage (very carefully) and see how it goes.

It could just be that you have a CPU that may not handle OC'ing as well as some others of the same batch.
The old adage always applies in OC'ing: 'your mileage may vary'.

Its interesting that your score is lesser than W1ntry...some analysis is required here.
AM2 socket CPUs 'should' have a significant OC'ing advantage over socket 939 CPUs, so I am as baffled as you.

As I always say...baby steps.

hmm ok well i'll play around with the 10x multiplier then. and yes i'm a bit baffled at the fact that my am2 is giving a lesser score than a 939 system with the same chip, but it's only day one, so i can't just end it there.. will try one more time tonight and see.
Title: Re: Philosophical45's benchies!!!
Post by: W1nTry on May 01, 2008, 09:43:31 PM
Well I must say that the AM2 should be a better OCer and it SHOULD score higher in the CPU test as it has significantly higher memory performance. However in terms of FPU and ALU performance there is little to NO difference in the 939 and AM2. The AM2 is just a 939 with support from DDR2. As Arc said check the HT multiplier keep in mind for the AMD platform the HT should run at 1GHz. Thus, for 250MHz memory you will have to set the HT mult at 4x once you go higher you take it down to 3, to stay as close as you can to 1GHz. You can in some instance surpass 1GHz but generall NOT by much. The 'FSB' multiplier on the other hand will be at least 10 maybe even 11. As arc said upping the voltage increase the heat output so it MIGHT be a factor.

That being said I noticed that even with relatively good temps I cannot surpass 2.5GHz stably. So temp may also NOT be the factor at least in MY case. DDR1 only has so much OC potential and i'm already at 25%. DDR2 should have some more headway. As you said it's day 1. Lastly keep in mind my Vid card is factory OCed to 660Mhz. I noticed that even with a HIGHER OC say 690-700 I saw LITTLE OR NO PERFORMANCE INCREASE, which leads me to believe its a CPU limitation at least on my end. Since FPU and ALU performance is similar between 939 and AM2 it could be that... just things to consider.

tried some more, but 3dmark keeps crashing, i'm beginning to think it's the version i have, i'm gonna download 3dmark06 basic and try again, but take a look at this, at 2.8ghz OC, i got 10100 virtual mark points, i'm slightly happy, lol... but it aint enough..

well i'm downloading the 3dmark06 basic edition first, i had the february patch installed, but i didn't bench after i installed it, starting over a fresh later tonight, hopefully i should get a proper score, but right about now, i feeling to sweat some game..lol

i now rest at this score.. for the top ten i may not dwell in, but the rankings i shall surely reside.. until some intel buying mofo come and rub me out..

i do realize the cpu limitation of the amd 4400+ x2. 10000 3dmarks with this chip aint possible unless i reach at least 2.8-3.0ghz and with the instability at those speeds, i can't get my scores higher.. so until something "new" comes into play, i shall remain content with my score and bow down to the intel  cpus.

Since i replaced the cpu, ran a bench, never posted it, i guess since this was the trend of the evening, i'll just post it, only the vcard was oc'd. The cpu ran too hot, things changed since then though.

May update score during the week, i have something coming in.

finally got time to run a benchmark, installed vista 64bit friday night, and well i tell you, one lil mc problem had me troubleshooting since mc 3a.m this morning, but only because i couldn't sleep... it seems to be fixed now, so to celebrate, let's run vantage..

my cpu score is ridiculously high though.. seems that the nvidia physx module really helps  :awesome:

Oh that is SWEET, but a rather large con for me is that stand.  I get it Asus...I really do.  You dare to be 'different', but oh GOD no.
I need to be able to tilt the thing.  I could live without height/pivot adjustments...but NOT tilt.

Still...kudos for the bold design choice...and the image quality looks outstanding.

I may have to get a new monitor by force myself soon.  My Acer seems to be playing up in its modda k@#t lately,
and I feel it may not last till December.

i think both companys make pretty good quality LCDs now.

Had my 24" Dell for years, no on 30" HP.

And i buy 2 24" dells, adn 1 23" Dell for other ppl, everything runing sweet thus far no complains.

Ah trust dell and HP for their screens.

Dat 22" look nice, welcome change coming from ah 17 im sure. u juss relaise d universe is ah bit bigger dan u thought it was :)

ASUS UL80VT Preview (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MiGmFmQSPqA#ws)

There's a newer model the UL80JT on amazon available for 870+ USD, but i couldn't handle the wait on that, and well i needed a new monitor and a new laptop so my budget covered the cost of both. So far the laptop is freaking sweet, haven't tested any games on it as yet, but it wasn't bought for that sole purpose. The battery life is freaking awesome.. my word. Windows 7 is moving nicely, no slow downs in multi-tasking. It will be a good little friend to me for quite a while. As you can see from the video and the few pics, the overall look of the laptop is very nice.. the Brushed aluminum cover finish is sweet, and the keyboard is extra comfortable. The touchpad is nothing to die for, but it works, and the few multi-touch gestures are decent. It's a well balanced laptop, and i'm proud to own it.

SPECS:

I'll try to add more experiences with the laptop as time goes on. ASUS FTW, they coming hard, my monitor is the shizznit, my laptop is the shizznit.. ah feel ah buying an ASUS motherboard, LOL..

i haven't tested much games on it, so far only Alien Swarm and that runs fine at the native res. From benchmarks i see online, my laptop can handle some new games but on medium to low settings. I plan to test it with Left 4 Dead 2 and Dawn of War 2, maybe i'll try Gears of War also. I will tell you how that goes later.

Well guys it's been YEARS... since i updated my desktop... so i made a small upgrade. Graphics card upgrade will come later on.

New CPU - AMD 1090t X6
New MoBo - Gigbabyte 890GPA-UD3H (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003A764XM/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_4?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER)
New Ram -  4GB ADATA GAMING SERIES DDR3  1600MHZ (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002EJ2P2G/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_3?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER)
New Case - CM 690 II ADVANCED

No time for benchmarks yet to compare to older setup, temps vastly improved from my older case.

One thing to mention for now, the gigabyte board i got is apparently the new revision, even though i thought amazon was selling the older revision according to the picture in their product description. So my board "officially" has support for the upcoming bulldozer chips.

Here are couple pics now of the current setup.

thanks y'all  :happy0203:

Well bf3 plus every other app and game i run currently, the dual core was showing its age. Man i played BC2 last night and i never knew the game could run so smooth, I was living in a lie before lol.  :ko: :shakehead:

Ha yuh see how fresh that lovely pepsodent blue looks on that black finish lol.

Now you need to get a 560 or something and yuh set.

Nice and clean man, wish I could say the same for my case......

but I find my bc2 runs real smooth on this dual core setup.

wonder if I living a lie as well?

aye.. the only way to tell is to run it on a beast machine... it will seem besss for u until u use better

thats what we keep tellin the android users... they figure it running fast cuz they know no better :O lol

Ha, whatever.

Lookin good Philo.

Forget the benchmarking yes, just stress-test the f@#k out of it to make sure
whatever you choose for your everyday settings will run flawlessly.

Who are you? And what have you done with Arcman??
Title: Re: Philosophical45's PC (Hardware and Benching) 4 ghz
Post by: Philosophical45 on April 26, 2011, 06:56:35 PM
So yea, I was bored today, had a little time to try to OC this new cpu. I have very little experience with these am3 chips with respect to default voltage, ddr3 ram timings, etc. So I spent a little time researching some stuff and gave it a shot. Since my chip is the black edition, I just took baby steps with the multiplier to keep stress mainly on the cpu rather than fiddle with the Northbridge Voltages, Dram Voltages, Clock Speeds etc...  :ko:

After couple baby steps, increments in voltage, and a blue screen in stability testing, i finally got to 4GHZ with a core voltage of 1.475. Unfortunately i did not use a hardcore program like Prime95 or OCCT to test stability, didn't have time, so while i was outside i just left Aida64 System Stability Test Run while i went to do something. So at full cpu load for about 1 hour, the system held up and I then tried to run 3dmark06 (yea it's the only tool i had at the time). Interesting i got 16k on stock before, just a random test but overclocked i got 18K.. not too shabby at all...

RESULTS FROM STABLITY TEST - LOAD TEMP 65DEG CELCIUS (KINDA HIGH INNIT?!)

(http://img135.imageshack.us/img135/6075/stabilitytest.th.png) (http://img135.imageshack.us/i/stabilitytest.png/)

3DMARK06 SCORE - NO OC ON THE VIDEO CARD

(http://img36.imageshack.us/img36/5705/firstrun4ghz.th.png) (http://img36.imageshack.us/i/firstrun4ghz.png/)

For daily use I've decided to leave the cpu @ stock, I'm not too comfortable with the temps, so maybe i can adjust the cooling situation with more/better fans or maybe a better cpu cooler. For the mean time, I'm seriously enjoying the performance gain of this chip vs my old dual core chip..

Peace out, I'll be back later, may the gods shine upon my face with blessings of graphics card bounty! :happy0203:

For a hex core, at that speed under that kind of load, that's an excellent temp.

Even at that speed while gaming, the cpu wont be taxed nearly as much as those stress testers do.

Lol @ video card blessings. Only thing you need in there now is a gtx 570 and your in a gear for bf3.

65 degrees full load?  On a hexa-core CPU?

Great stuff mate.  You could more than run it 24/7 with that.
Of course, knowing you, a better CPU cooler might give that much greater peace of mind.

You could always invest in one of these (http://www.thermalright.com/products/index.php?act=data&cat_id=27&id=172).  :happy0203:

Silver Arrow performance in a MUCH smaller package.  Cheaper too.

This thread older than red stripe tube socks but let me update it...

Haven't upgraded for a significant time due to school and other stuff taking my finances. Last month end, I literally walked into manna falling from heaven. So I bit the bullet... here's the small update...

New CPU - i7 6700 (non K)
New Mobo - Biostar Z170T

Added another 250GB SSD from my now dead Zenbook, sigh!

Hopefully once time and finances permit, I'd upgrade my graphics card and my workspace..
