Title: Flip Art
Post by: Red Paradox on May 08, 2008, 06:53:54 PM
I ran into NEO and I asked him about the poster I made a few weeks back.
he told me it's cool but innovative artwork would be better....So I decided to make my own thread and I'll put my pieces in there when I get a chance
I'll start with Poison Ivy
most of my pieces are huge files so I'll decrease em and post em very soon

Ah, cool.
Now this is what I'm talking about.

*sets up game face*

All righty. I'm just going to point out a couple of things here, just so that you could look at it and improve in future works:

- Something bothers me about her hair. I'm sure you were trying to acheive a wild, untamed look with her hair, but, if that was the case, you should have more individual strands of hair going all over the place. Also, that big chunk of hair sticking out on the left side of the picture seems very odd....it just doesn't flow with the rest of her hair, which seems to be blowing to the right.

If you want an example of how I tackle here, look at these two pieces here:

- http://neweraoutlaw.deviantart.com/art/May-I-have-this-Dance-56967687

The first picture shows, more or less, how you can get away with depicting wild hair that goes all over the place. Pay particular note to Kimi's pigtail in that one. As for the second one, it shows that even if hair is long and flowing, it's somewhat uniform in doing so (the wind is blowing behind her, so virtually all of her hair is blowing towards the right of the picture.)

Also, try to avoid drawing hair in needless clumps. Hair is hair, and needs to be depicted as such....as group of strands packed together. Note that if I have to resort to clumping some hair together, I tack on a couple of strands and the end of the mass to loosen it up a bit.

- Your lineart seems a bit....flat. A general rule of thumb when inking your work is to make lines heavier on thar part of the picture that falls into the shade, and lighter where light is actually hitting said figure. Also, inking is also used to clear up the 'sketchy' look of pencil work, and I'm seeing a few spots where the lineart seems rough (on her leg and by her shoulder).

- Instead of using the Burn Tool to darken areas, you should choose gradually darker hues from your color swatches (or manually tweak the same colour by clicking on the colour on the toolbar) and work your way until you've achieved an effect of shading.

- Your anatomy needs a bit of work. Poison's left arm muscles starting at her biceps going down are all wrong. It looks like she has a tumour in that forearm. The same goes for her hip on the left side as well....either that's a misplaced hip bone, or she has a canker sore ready to burst from her side.

Well, it's good to see you're taking a whack at this.
Just follow on what I've said, and you should be all right.
