Title: My 8600GTS temps
Post by: Redfish on August 27, 2008, 01:28:03 PM
I've always wondered if the idle temp on my card was safe.

It runs 73/74 deg on idle and shoots up to and past the 90 deg mark when playing a game like GRID......

Is that safe?? or should I take drastic measures to improve cooling...

Yes I only have one fan on the side panel but I really not sure if those high temps cutting it..

yea u should try to get some more air passing through ur system. iono why but my gpu card was @ 90+ degrees all the time but since i installed my new heatsink with a giant fan the card idles @ 60 and around 75 on load. 8400 gs so air flow is wha u need throw in some more fans or leave the side open.

For a GPU like that, 'normal' idle temps are usually in the region of about 60 deg C, so 74 deg is a tad high,
but nothing to be alarmed about.  Still, you need to take some steps to cool that biatch.

If you want, I can sell you my Antec Spot Cool fan (http://www.antec.com/us/productDetails.php?ProdID=75018), which I can't use anymore because of my dual-GPU setup.
It should help bring the temps down a little.  (I'll have to find it though )

Hmm ok, I don't think I'll need that fan though Arc I just need some more case fans or that side panel fan I have isn't blowing hard enough (have to put my hand right up over it to feel the little bit of airflow)

Just took the side panel off and temps dropped to the 67-68 idle

see...  My case always open lol (actually i lost the side panel while moving from home lol) but it's still cool

The spot cool fan might only help if u getting enough intake air to blow toward the card.
Arc. if he doesn't want it.. i 'm very interested. PM me if u sellin it nah?

Yea Kraeoss I hear u on that, I just don't like the extra dust drama....

I put my room fan on it on high speed and the temp is 60 deg now lol good ole big ass fan cooling but yea I need some proper case fans...

One other question, if I was to add a 120mm fan on the empty fan slot on the back of my case, should it be pulling air in or blowing air out?

Generally should a case suck air in from the front and then blow it out the back? ,my case has space at the front for two 120mm fans I think, not sure how the hell I'm getting them in there in such a tight space.

Yeah I'm a noob with the cooling, fans, making your pc sound like a plane starting up it's jet engines lol.

Generally, the intake should be infront and the Rear fans should blow out.
Most cases have clips at the bottom, so u can remove the entire face plate in order to put in the fans. If not, using tie straps to tie the fans in place from the inside of the case may be a suitable alternative.

^I hear yuh, the question is how to fit  fans in that space I have at the front. Man I can feel the cuts on my knuckles already when the time comes...

gloves  yes u heard me... pc cases call for blood lol almost every system i fixed with a new or kinda new case left me with some sort of cut so i say a small glove  :hello:

lol @ the barbeque idea....

LoL yea I know it's toasty, was fiddling with the EVGA Precision tool last night and trying to squeeze a lil bit more performance out of the card but while switching in and out of GRID and checking the temps it was truly a wtf!! moment for me.

A new PowerSupply is really needed yes...and so the job hunting continues lol

Kraeoss, you can use the edit button so you won't have to double post, the mods hate that and I'm sure they'll rape you soon enough for it  :shakehead:

well the new powersupply i think aint much of your heat problem, and remember when u said ur grid started showing all kinda funny colours, that happens when d card overheats.. the driver crashes and it looks like u watchin 8bit shizz..

wais d fan speed on that card @ idle and game times?, and you have any fans in that system at all?

Don't get me wrong nothing shows bad in GRID it's just the temps while I'm playing it is what I was talking about. I know the PS aint the cure but I do need it nonetheless...

fan speed at idle is around 40% and it goes up to pretty much almost 90% when gaming

no breds.. u can't remember when ur grid was showing real bad colours.. ? i telling u is because of that..

As I said, 90 deg C load temp is not alarmingly high.  8800 GTs regularly reach that temp and higher also.
Still, having it run a little cooler would not hurt.

I must disagree by saying that 90deg is very high. very high indeed. I can't see those things lasting very long at those temps, not to mention perform optimally. Just as a little idea, my 8800gts never got pass 72deg under full load, overclocked to the tee.

Now if you are adventurous enough, you can remove the heatsink off the card, wipe away the thermal compound on the gpu and apply some fresh AS5. If you're not up for that, use riva tuner or your tweaking tool of choice and up the fan speed as desired. This will make a big difference w/o changing anything else.

ent.. arc think is a 4870 he have ah wa..lol.. my 8800gt single slot runs at 70 max under load, daz when it folding eh... with fan on auto.. 90c is madness for a lil 8600gts.. MADNESSS

Well, your mileage may vary of course.  I used to see regular temps of 86-90 degC on my 8800GT, especially
when playing Crysis, and you KNOW how punishing Crysis can be on GPUs.

I got a weird question though (doh mean to hijack thread).
On my 8800GT i have the fan running constantly at 94% (noise is not an issue for me, i won't hear it), can this damage the fan over a prolonged time?

Reason i asked is, bak wen i had a 6600GT i installed a Zalman fan which ran at highest speed constantly without problems after a year and more...
but that's an aftermarket fan...

any insight on this anyone?

^ I don't think that should be a prob, they supposed to be tested etc. to take a beating......

I took off my side panel and the fan that was on it then took some masking tape and positioned it to blow on my card and boy oh boy she's idling at 60-62deg and on full load reaching about 80-82deg so I'm happy for the while....

I may do some madness when I buy like a set of 4 120mm fans and tape em up together to get some serious cooling lol

Of course the fan will fail faster if it is running at a higher speed like that, but by the time it does fail, you'll have upgraded long ago anyway.
