Oh boy.. the US politicians who say to ban video games are going to jump all over this one:
http://www.tomsguide.com/us/Halo-3-Shot-Parents,news-3153.html (quoted below)
http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2008/12/boy_killed_mom_and_shot_dad_ov.html (with pics of said boy)
A 17-year-old male shot his parents - killing his mother and wounding his father - all because they took Halo 3 away from him.
Thanks to this kid, you can now chalk another one up for politicians wanting to see the end of video games.
Way to go, buddy.
That’s probably a good summation of gamers worldwide after hearing Daniel Petric’s deadly retaliation. There’s nothing more sickening than violence related to games, especially sickening to those who depend on the medium as a source of income. Is this kid really a byproduct of electronic violence, or suffering the after-effects of a violent household? The vicious scenario, laid out by prosecutors during Monday’s trial, paints a familiar scene yanked from any crime drama.
According to the prosecutors, Daniel sneaked out of his bedroom back in September 2007, and later snuck back in with a tasty, just-purchased retail copy of Halo 3. Banned from playing games of this nature, Daniel was forced to hand over the game once caught by his parents. Thus his father, Mark Petric, a minister at New Life Assembly of God in Wellington, took the copy of Halo 3 and locked it away in a lockbox located in his closet (which incidentally was the same place he kept a 9mm handgun tucked away).
A month later, Daniel broke into the lockbox and retrieved both the Halo 3 game and the 9mm handgun. Once both items were in hand, Daniel went downstairs and approached his parents as they lounged on the couch. He asked them to close their eyes, claiming the he had a "surprise." Mark Petric, 45, testified that he was actually expecting a pleasant surprise. Unfortunately, that pleasant surprise turned out to be a shot in the head, killing the mother and "gravely" wounding the father. Daniel immediately place the gun in his father’s hand, saying "Hey Dad, here’s your gun. Take it."
Mark, still alive, blood pouring from his bullet wound, his head numb, realized that his wife was dead. He believes that he is still alive because of his older daughter and son-in-law arriving at the house to watch an Indians game.
"You guys shouldn’t come in," he heard Daniel tell the couple outside. "Mom and Dad had a big argument."
Like some cue from a horror movie, Heidi and Andrew both said that they heard moans coming from inside the house, perhaps even calling out their names. After bursting into the house and investigating, they found the wounded father and dead mother. In response, Daniel picked up the gun, poised to kill, however Andrew managed to seize the weapon from the boy before any additional slayings occurred. Daniel fled in the family van, but was captured by police shortly thereafter, Halo 3 sitting in the front seat like some possessed Book of the Dead.
Now on trial, Daniel faces charges of murder and attempted murder. He is being tried without a jury before Lorain County Common Pleas Judge James Burge. Daniel’s lawyer commented that the boy was under heavy stress at the time of the incident, as a snowboarding accident left the teen with a severe staph infection. The accident also caused severe spinal damage, and the slightest injury could leave him paralyzed as a result (but he can climb out a window and hike all the way to a retail store to purchase Halo 3). Daniel became familiar with the Halo franchise while recuperating for a year, lying around watching television and playing games. His parents eventually banned games like Halo 3, saying that they are too violent.
Lawyers prosecuting the case do not wish to seek the death penalty, and surprisingly enough, the boy’s family wants him home. In the year Daniel has been in custody, both father and son have mended bridges, and the family actually wants Daniel to come back home.
"You’re my son," Mark Petric said after Daniel apologized for what he had done. "You’re my boy."
Damn you Daniel!!! :shakehead:
WTF were you thinking? It's just a game dammit!!
I recenlty came off sweating a hardcore, 10 hour, 3 xbox, 10 man, Halo 3 sweat this weekend at a friend's house, and you go do this??
-
Sick Sad World......and out of all games...Halo 3....steups no offense to any body but them Americans proving stupider every day
-
offending who?? pfft lolz tell it like it is brothherr
lol the minister had a gun at home?
awesome..
-
What's worse, it sounds like the little bugger tried to frame his dad for the shooting. Just listen to this part:
Daniel immediately place the gun in his fathers hand, saying "Hey Dad, heres your gun. Take it."
"You guys shouldnt come in," he heard Daniel tell the couple outside. "Mom and Dad had a big argument."
That rotten little bastard.
Well, Daniel. Not only have you gone apes**t insane over a damn video game, but you also decided that it would be a good idea to shoot your parents, try to set up your dad and then run away. And after all of that, all you've succeeded in doing is adding fuel to the fire on angry soccer moms trying to blame violence on video games, and earning the ire of respectable gamers everywhere.
Ironically, by doing this, you won't ever get to play Halo 3 again. Different story altogether had you listened to your folks to begin with.
Daniel, this is for you.

YOU FAIL.

hmm like i dont trust the lord to save protect him or what. Still feel sorry for them though. I mean i have gotten mad when people took my games(NES) from me and hid it but geez shoot and kill is a bit over the top. I may feel mad or upset that i dont have my mind numbing game anymore but kill for it? No way.
Come onn ppl its just a game. besides braging rights you have nothing to gain except lost time...
-
By the way, why would the MINISTER of a dad lock the game game away in the SAME PLACE as his GUN??
Then again, why does a minister HAVE a gun to begin with??

Um.....so because he is a minister he is not supposed to protect himself in a manner he seems fit? I'm not going to be all righteous and blah blah but are you a minister sax? Do you believe that you don't need a gun to protect yourself? Have you ever heard a sermon where that minister says guns won't protect you?
There are alot of more questions i could ask but the point is. The man had a gun, the man is a minister SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO WHAT?
Gosh *mumbles incoherently about people always feel they know about how a minister/christian's should live*

*mumbles incoherently about people always feel they know about how a minister/christian's should live*
sounds like we have a pastor's son in the house
*snickers...* :laughing7:
-
Come on Cross...you have to admit...a pastor having a gun does raise some eyebrows.
All Sax did was ask a question. There was nothing negative (or positive for that matter) implied there.
-
OH Cross, soooo glad you decided to defend the gun toting minister.
If you wish to argue the point i would be moreeee than happy to discuss both america's gun happiness alongside why a minister "of the lord" would keep a gun at home.
But i believe there is a really awesome saying that goes something like, What Would Jesus Do.
It roxx.

That i admit it would raise an eye brow but GEEEEEEEEZ everyone gets all "let's get the Christian's" when they do something wrong
I'm glad that people set such high standards for Christians though :D

Um......actually no
I'm not going to defend anyone or discuss people having guns

I think it's been stated, time and time again, that if you keep a gun at home, there's a bigger chance a family member will get shot rather than a bandit or intruder in the house.
Either way, it's a bit of an oxymoron to have one to begin with, because if you need one, you'll need to lock it away. And if a bandit does enter your house and you need to pull it out now for NOW, what're you going to do?
Find out where you hid it, fumble with some keys (making some noise in the process), unlock the case, get the gun. That is, of course, providing:
a) The bandit's not already holding you at gunpoint;
b) The bandit didn't get to the gun before you did;
c) The gun's already loaded (any smart gun owner usually leaves it UNloaded when idle)
....ironic advice coming from me here, but if you buy a gun for the purpose of protecting your family, what's the point? There is just so much to write off before you're actually ready to draw. Of course, you can just always hide the loaded gun under your pillow as you sleep, but that'll just increase the chances of you blasting little Billy to smithereens when he runs in scared because he had a nigthmare.

It not jus christian... Muslims get a real rough time too. But is like a saying my std 5 teacher taught me. You can do a world of good... and people will always remember the bad you did.

wrt the pastor thing.
he is a man, a human being, just like any of you. And he will try his best to ensure his family's safety and their confidence in it.
If he thinks that a gun is a necessity to protect his family, then let him be, he is fortunate enough to live in a country where there is a right to bear firearms and rights that also accompany the firearm's usage, his profession/life style is irrelevant.
I am not a Christian.

Peter in the bible took a sword and cut off a guy's ear. lol,
In more modern times, the crusades and jihads can lay to rest any concerns one might have about religious people carrying arms.
Hypocritical? yes. Fact of life? yes.
This is once again, a sobering article. As the years go by, we will continue to see violence and gaming intertwined. It should be noted, the recurring titles and systems involved.
Just yesterday I was talking about how relatively "kiddie safe" the Wii system has been. You can even let your kids go online with it without much concern as well. Holds true for most if not all Nintendo's assets.
Can't speak for all, but personally, I've played Nintendo's Wii games, had a great time but the urge to cross over into real world violence never comes to mind. They've toed the line very well. Not so for CoD4, Halo, Grand Theft Auto and oh don't even get me started on Gears of War. Chainsaw massacre in everybody mc. Violence, and I mean real world violence, is not just demonstrated but celebrated in these titles and on these systems.
We will continue to reap the rewards for placing these games and systems in the hands of the youth. Say what you want about it being the parent's job to keep them away from "mature" titles. The reality is, a 12 year old near you is playing GTA4, Halo 2 and Gears of War as we speak.
If it's one thing, all the noise being made on a call for a ban on some of these titles will serve to raise awareness. Not sure what else can really be done than precisely that, raise awareness.
-
Well said NGW. I actually had to 'ban' a youthman (9 yrs) and warn his moms about GTA San Andreas, which he was adamant to play. I certainly didn't want to be responsible for exposing him to that, and then have his moms blamin me for 'screwin up mih chile'.
-
what did Jesus do when that breadren cut off guys ear?
Remember well, what would Jesus do.

Unfortunately Crixx, we live in a world with 6 billion people who come up quite a bit short in following the "WWJD" mantra.
As a side note, and just thinking out a loud, I wonder what the religious statistics are for the world nowadays. That is how many atheists, how many christians, hindus, etc...
google homework immc.

GEEEEEEEEZ everyone gets all "let's get the Christian's" when they do something wrong
ORLY?!?!?? EVERYONE? AGAINST CHRISTIANS? ...EVERYONE?
Don't make it a religious issue of victimization PLEASE! I'm a muslim (and proud of it) and trust me you don't know the half of it when it comes to blaming muslims for the MAJORITY of "Acts of Terror". The finger may not be directly to me but the same way you feel a how about the minister business same way I feel when people with little or no evidence blame MUSLIM TERRORISTS and not just TERRORISTS......k i stopping there abruptly but w/e
Point is don't make it a Christian thing cuz if it was a Pundit , Imam , Rabbai or any other religious figure more than likely people would have asked why they needed a gun.
-
if it was a rabbai
mossad woulda be all over it and the story woulda dissappear lol trust!!
but really, lol at "zohh noeees, the christians have teh worllddd of persecution and pwight :("
ahaha ^_^
but one of the reasons WHYYYYY people may jump all over an issue when it involves a Christian clergy person, is because....yes i have the balls to say it ... Christians are super duper judgemental and love pointing fingers (i.e the super duper judgemental and finger pointy ones, not all lol ok?)
-
thanks redlum
interesting statistics

Um did you read what i posted? Let me spell it out
GEEEEEEEEEEEEZ everyone gets all "let's get the Christian's" when they do something wrong
My point was he was a minister.....of a Christian church so my statement was limited to Christians. I know about the persecution of Muslims I have quiet a few friends who face that and we always joke about them going to airports. Silva i wasn't disrespecting your religon or anything i was basically drawing reference to somethingif it was a rabbai
mossad woulda be all over it and the story woulda dissappear lol trust!!

-
All right, folks. Let's not get carried away on the religion topic, here. Kindly keep it civil, please.
-
Let me make something very f*cking clear here. I will blame the PARENTS not the GAME for f*cking that child up. I mean who the f*ck lets a teenager play games like this when its WRITTEN ON THE BOX and OPENLY ADVERTISED for a certain age. This is just for starters. Second is banning him AFTER he got his hands on the damn game, and then ALLOWING him a system that will LET him play something like this.
On a side note...once again NEO hits us with his "i dont get it" jokes. Dread....no offense and ting, yuh cool and all...but yuh jokes just......way......like...way :P :D
-
Shiv, if I read the story right, I think he kinda 'snuck out' to get that game eh...I don't think
the parents willingly bought that one.
-
On a side note...once again NEO hits us with his "i dont get it" jokes. Dread....no offense and ting, yuh cool and all...but yuh jokes just......way......like...way :P :D
Uhm....I see three posts made by me in this thread. None of them were jokes.
You feeling all right?
-
ok I tempted to lock this thread (as i started it) till everyone cools down.
and shivadee... re-read the opening post. The kid sneak out and bought the game. (see paragraph part highlighted in red)
I'd chastise the dad mainly for putting the game in the SAME place as the gun.
-
Holup.....sorry if I implied that his parents knew he bought the game that was not my intention.
For GoW2 midnight launch in San Diego i was in line with a bunch of kids WITH their parents. I mean, if the parents okay it, well we cant tell them how to raise thier children. In this case, its a big as hell fine for the STORE who sold that game. that is illegal.......VERY illegal.
This was what I was trying to get at. Sorry...man happy on doubles (eh eat doubles in 6 months)
@ NEO - Price is Right ..man find...cut, paste and link oui :D
-
hmm, let me highlight also that some parents have a real challenge in staying on top of digital media.
For example, my son's friend (about 12 years old) brought across a "Futurama" DVD for the boys to look at while on vacation.
At first glance, nothing seems out of place. A regular cartoon. My daughter (age 3) sat down taking in the action. Now anyone familiar with Futurama will know how mature the content of that show is. Luckily, I caught them in the act and banned the dvd from the house.
But the question is, how many other DVDs like that have slipped in through the cracks? How many more are still to come?
Same goes for games. Whether the kids sneak out to acquire, borrow from a friend, (and my personal fav) download it from the net. The parents have a HUGE task in monitoring and prohibiting the inappropriate material.
In fact, I'll go so far to say that less tech savy parents don't stand a chance.
Don't have a solution (save for continued awareness campaigns) but the situation is a bit grim.
I'll always remember playing Mortal Kombat as a kid. My parents, good parents though they were, bought the game for me and my younger bro as a christmas or birthday present for $600.00. Never for a second checking the rating.
pressure.
-
Considering my career, my kids have their work cutout for them :P
assuming i have any :P
-
hahaha, that's fuh real.
I'd like to see Shiv Junior try to pull a fast one on you. lihixxxxxxxxxxxx ihmc.
Wish all parents were so lucky.

torrents people torrents.. nuff said
-
Fatalities at age 11 :D
My kids are going to have a hard time trying to get around me but I'm going to be cool and teach them right from wrong.
Bringing homes a's and a+'s - right
Taking daddy's favorite glock and putting two in his dome for denying you playing Halo 6 - wrong
Running into the bedroom screaming because you had a nightmare there by ruining daddy's chance of getting some action - WRONG!! (with a cutarse factor lined in)
Playing bloody vids games....- so long as you eh try to snipe the neighbourhood kids........i might let it pass once I know you can handle yourself.
-
lol @ cutarse factor
You know, as a kid, playing Quest for Glory and Ultima had such a profound impact on my psych. A lot of who I am today stems from experiences in those rpgs.
To a little lesser extent, books and comic books. I always laugh when Crixx says he has a super hero complex but it is something I'm sure anyone whose read way too many comics as a child can relate too.
Point being, it is really important what you expose your children too during their formative years.
On another note, we used to have a serious problem with this @ the GLs because you'd have primary school kids playing Lego Racers 2 but sitting next to an older gamer sweating hard Grand Theft Auto or Soldier of Fortune. They'd constantly resist all attempts to segregate 'em from the mature crowd.
Not an easy task. Parents can't be everywhere and kids are quite likely going to be exposed despite best efforts. Rock and a hard place yes.
