Title: The Definitive Anime Recommendation Thread!
Post by: EmpireKing on April 25, 2009, 09:30:01 AM
Fellas I frustrated...i need new anime..here's a list of what I like and what I watched.

DBZ
Naruto
Bleach
Kenichi(History's Strongest Disciple)
Gantz(the only anime with guns I ever enjoy)
Tenju Tenge
Kurokami
Ayakashi
DearS- cant remember what it was about but i knew i loved the ecchiness
Law of Ueki

Currently downloading ShanGri La and Magikano to see if id like.

..I really dont like anything mech/guns/romance/drama....for me its all about the funnyish action with powers or magic. Maybe sum hentaish(ecchi) content inbetween for the occasional nosebleed effect.. Can anyone help?

Kurau: Phantom Memory

If you're looking for an anime with an intriguing and intelligent storyline, then this is for you. not really a comedy anime, but definitely one of the best i've ever seen. here's the trailer (which IMO, doesn't do it justice).

Kurau Phantom Memory trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_SpqPf8EY_g#lq-hq)

Hajime No Ippo - The Fighting

Anyone who hasn't watched this series is missing out on life itself  but seriously, this series has everything. comedy, action, drama, more action. a top of the line show all round. couldn't find an official trailer, but here's one using the "Never Back Down" trailer audio.

Never Back Down - Hajime No Ippo TRAILER - "RiCh0" End (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8DJBDy6mg8#lq-lq2-hq-vhq)

I have a few more that i can suggest, but i'll leave you with 2 for now :happy0203:

havent watched it out yet but ive enjoyed this series so far..

Quote
Set in the modern age, the story is about Rokujo Miharu, who just wanted to live a normal life and inherit a Okonomiyaki restaurant. At the moment, his biggest problem was the constant pestering from Kouichi Aizawa and Durandal Thobari Kumohira, who started a Nindō (忍道 ?, lit. "Way of the Ninja") Club. Miharu wanted nothing to do with "ninjas" and turns them down every time. But soon, he is attacked by an actual group of ninjas and is protected by Kouichi and Kumohira. There, Miharu learns of the hidden ninja world Nabari, the roles of his classmate and teacher in that world, and of the secret art Shinra Banshou (森羅万象 ,Shinrabanshō?, lit. "all things in nature") within him. The secret art, containing all the world's knowledge, is sorely coveted after in Nabari. And because of that, Miharu cannot return to his normal life. He must become the "Ruler of Nabari" to survive.

newish anime? Pandora Hearts...very different...Alice in Wonderland inspired...

Quote
Oz Bezarius, heir to one of the duke houses, has just turned fifteen. His life is rich and carefree, darkened only by the constant absence of his father. At his coming-of-age ceremony, however, everything changes. For no reason that he can discern, he's cast into the prison known as the "Abyss", only to be saved by a "chain" known as Alice, the bloodstained black rabbit. The mystery there begins as Oz unravels the mystery behind Alice, the Abyss and the strange organization known as Pandora. The series features heavy references to Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland" and can be considered both fantasy and mystery.

well i watched Kurau in English and the dub was exceptionally well done. the actress who played Kurau did an amazing job, believe me. but the fansub are out there, if you prefer.

Check out Sengoku Basara if you want something newish and fun with action.

i actually dropped that series from the first episode. it was a little too over the top for my liking. seeing 2 samurai start fighting only to fly 1000 feet into that air like in Bleach was just too much.

Alternative title:
メジャー (Japanese)

Genres: comedy, drama, tournament
Themes: Baseball, Sports
Age rating: All Ages (Nothing objectionable)
Plot Summary:
Goro's dream is to become a professional baseball player like his father. As he strives through the path towards the pro league, from infancy to adulthood, his passion for the game galvanizes all of those around him.
Shigeharu Honda is a Major Leauge batter on the rise. His son Goro is a Little League pitcher who one day hopes to follow in his father's footsteps. Momoko Hoshino is Goro's schoolteacher, and the first woman Shigeharu has been interested in since the death of Goro's mother. The destines of these three individuals will become intertwined as father and son experience both heartbreak and triumph on the baseball diamond. But when an unspeakable tragedy visits the family, it will take everything they have to pick up the pieces and reclaim their dreams.

This one is true GEM, right up there with HAJIME NO IPPO. Its not really followed by the masses as it is dramatically underated. But i got turned into watching this while looking for an anime series to watch when my collection of Ippo was up. It certainly filled the gap and more.

So far there have been 4 completed seasons and we are in season 5. Watch the first 5 episodes.

You won't regret it

School days. Seriously, a mild-wtf type anime...with the most outrageous ending. I say that series (12 episodes) worth it, just for the ending. Nice in-between anime. Have my 4 stars.

I also really really enjoyed the Higurashi series as well. Can't recommend this enough, stick with it past the first chapter and you'll be hooked.

Terra look interesting. I'll check it out. My top anime are (along with Kurau and Ippo in post 2)......

Gungrave - This is the type of show that makes you proud to be an anime fan. And it has the most fulfilling final episode I've ever seen in an anime (and I've seen ALOT of anime )

Gungrave Trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UG1wLnthiC8#lq-lq2-hq)

Gankutsuou - The Count of Monte Cristo - A new take on Alexandre Dumas' classic novel. This series was EPIC. Oh my word. The story was so intriguing that I often planned to watch just 2 episodes at a time and ended up watching 8. Yes, it's that damn good.

【PV】巌窟王 (Gankutsuou Trailer) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwjWBnWjWbc#lq-lq2-hq)

Mushi-Shi - Another classic of anime. Outstanding storyline, animation and music. Each episode is a self contained story of the exploits of the main character. Some the episodes had me literally standing and clapping. I kid you not. Watch now.

蟲師/「様々鳴れ」 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SdOHryXNMqA#lq-hq)

Last Exile - I'm sure alot of you watched this anime on G4. Amazing animation, story and music *experiences deja vu*. Take in this one if you already haven't

Last Exile (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L58gheV0360#lq-hq)

Berserk - Ole skewl anime, but still amazing none the less. Again, the story's what caught me. Just wish they'd bring out a part 2 :crybaby2:. Oh and it's INSANELY VIOLENT, so beware.

Berserk - The Trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y41TE0-6_aU#lq-lq2-hq)

They're other like Blood+, Black Lagoon and Gurren Lagann, but those are popular enough. I'm sure you guys saw it already (or at least I hope you did ).

Infinite frackin chakra for mentioning Berserk...my fav anime ...eva...if you want to follow up the story, the manga is ongoing ( think it was on hiatus recently though)

Gankutsuou - The Count of Monte Cristo was damn good too, art style was somehow hypnotizing as well....

had gungrave but disc never worked... :shakehead:

will test dem others...

pleeeeease watch Gungrave. It's my #1 favorite anime of all time, followed by Berserk. here's a couple of reviews to help convince you. Oh, BTW, don't judge the show after episode 1. the remaining 25 eps are amazing.

Has anyone seen this series yet? OMG. Talk about amazing. This is probably the first anime I've seen with this much depth. The amount of info that hits you can hurt the brain at times, but it's so good, you wouldn't mind. Yet another classic that deserves its rightful dues. PS. The main villian in this series, Johan, scares the living poop out of me. Hitler ain't got nothin' on him.

I got up to episode 53 and took a break from it. I was enjoying it up to that point but the whole Karl thing felt a bit unnecessary to me. Will give it a second chance.

I watched the first episode of Umineko no Naku koro ni today...very excited for this. If you've seen any of the Higurashi, definitely check it out.

Umineko info: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=10168 (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=10168)

Higurashi:http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=6134

Edit: This got me thinkin, why not have an anime-to-avoid thread as well? It'd be the same as the Movie spoiler thread but with anime and reasons to avoid them. My latest gripe has been Nabari no Ou. Great lookin bit unorthodox anime but disappointed in the end.

this anime win...period...just watched it out

if you thought gurren lagann was over the top...well this oui sah

based on the ps 2 game devils kings and very very losely based on feudal japanese history.

In the bloody Warring States period of feudal Japan, many generals fought in an endless struggle for power, but one man proved to be too big a threat - The dark lord Oda Nobunaga. Sanada Yukimura and Date Masamune, two young warriors from different regions who become heated rivals, begin to form an unlikely alliance with the rest of the generals to take down the Devil King.

I am still reading the manga and though the anime deviated from the manga, I believe the animators had to make a decision whether to continue following or to try to bring some sense of closure, they simply used the manga story and embellished a bit to give the showdown some sort of feasibility. Sure it wasn't perfect, but it wasn't downright horrible.

Either way Demons and a new Abysmal on ftw.

why would anyone really submit themselves to watching the second season if they already dissatisfied with the ending of the first though? It's like going back to the same doubles man who gave you food poisoning last time around...

I'm just saying that the series isn't over till it's over, and don't judge the whole thing after only seeing half of it. I myself did not particularly like the ending of the first season, but that's one of the factors that made the whole thing enjoyable overall.

This is really weird and unlike me but I like it

化物語 - Bakemonogatari - Opening 'flashback' (HD) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VouqDbOSns#ws-lq-lq2-hq-vhq-hd)

Bakemonogatari is formed from "bakemono" and "monogatari", loosely translating it to Monster Stories (Monstories?). Each chapter of the original novels revolves around one heroine with different powers (e.g. vampire, weightless etc.), and each chapter's story plays an important role in the next one. The series primarily focuses on a conversation between characters; it contains a certain amount of parody to other series, media, wordplays and metahumor.

then theres Needless.....kinda messed up too

I was wondering about that, is FMA B different from the original? I started watching and at first (since memory escapes me sometimes) I thought to myself... these are old episodes... are they? or is it a completely new series compared to the original anime?

Welcome to the N.H.K.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Welcome_to_the_N.H.K. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Welcome_to_the_N.H.K.)

Man oh man. One great series after another. Just finished watching this one yesterday, and it was instantly added to my "Top 10 Series Ever List". The show revolves around a young man named Tatsuhiro Satō. A 22 year old university dropout who lived the last 4 years of his life as a hikikomori (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hikikomori) and is also a NEET (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NEET). I didn't even know those terms were actually used in real life up until a few minutes ago. The show touches on so many topics. Everything from MMO addiction, gold-farming and pyramid schemes, to more serious issues like chronic depression, child abuse and even suicide, all tastefully portrayed and acted. But despite its serious topics, the series has a lot of comedy and even some action thrown in. I'm almost 100% sure that some people on the forum will be able to relate in so way with what these characters a going through. I know I did. Oh, and on a quick side note, the English dub for the series IS superior to the Japanese one (I've listened to both of them objectively and yes, it is better). IMO, it's GITS level voice acting. Chris Patton of Full Metal Panic (Sousuke) and RahXephon (Ayato) fame does an excellent job of portraying Satō. Look up youtube for the dub if you don't believe me. 5 star series all around and a definite recommendation.

Welcome to the NHK Trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYLsjJ8RThQ#lq-lq2-hq)

yeah, the trailer kinda sucks, but the series doesn't so....

jus started this anime Bokurano

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bokurano (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bokurano)

Quote
During a summer camp, 15 children, 8 males and 7 females, find a grotto by the sea. Deep within they discover working computers and some electronic equipment, and later the owner, a man who introduces himself as "Kokopelli". Kokopelli claims to be a programmer working on a brand new game, in which a large robot has to defend the Earth against fifteen alien invasions. He persuades the children to test the game and enter into a contract. All but one of them agree, and a moment later they mysteriously awaken on the shore, believing what happened was just a dream

After episode 4 i was positively hooked, this is definitely something different people, its worth a look.

BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BECK:_Mongolian_Chop_Squad (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BECK:_Mongolian_Chop_Squad)

Synopsis: Tanaka Yukio, known as Koyuki, is your typical 14-year old, feeling detached from life and with a liking for J-pop music. One ordinary day, after returning from school, he saves a grotesque dog belonging to aspiring young musician Minami Ryuusuke, who yearns to form a rock band named BECK. From that moment on, Koyuki must undergo a journey through his adolescence and struggle for fame and fortune.

Didn't expect to like this one, seeing as I'm not really a rock fan. But I must admit, it was pretty good. Not for everyone as it IS a drama, but if you're looking for something different, check this one out. Better yet if you're a rocker. But it has a lot, and I mean A LOT OF CUSSIN' in both the subbed and dubbed versions. So kids, look elsewhere.

Le Chevalier D'Eon

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le_Chevalier_D%27Eon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le_Chevalier_D%27Eon)

Synopsis: The story begins in Paris 1742, when the body of a woman named Lia de Beaumont is found in a casket floating along the Seine. The only clue regarding her death is the word "Psalms", which is written in blood on the lid of the casket. D'Eon de Beaumont, Lia's younger brother and a knight in service of King Louis XV, takes it upon himself to investigate his sister's mysterious death, along with the strange disappearances of a number of French women. In his journey he comes across three companions to help him.

An amazing, story-driven anime. Anyone with an appreciation for a rich, deep, serious storyline would do themselves a big favor by watching this one. You won't be disappointed. Kinda weird hearing English and Frenchmen speaking Japanese, but whatever. I watched the dub anyway :tongue3:.

So outside of FMA were there any noteworthy series over the last 2 seasons ? I've been out of the loop, last thing I saw was Guin Saga, which was decent enough.

Came across one or two interesting things here where I had initially overlooked it or just didn't know about it I kinda stopped watching animes because I just couldn't find anything decent anymore so I mostly deal with manga.  I find that most of the good/great animes are usually all old so the lot of you who liked animes like "Hajime No Ippo" I have heard of "Major" I think you guys should check out

Prince Of Tennis
Initial D
Eye Shield 21
Hikaru No Go

The last decent animes I saw was "Heroic Age" & "Guren Lagan" and as of last week or so "Gundam Unicorn" seems to have some potential.

So I'm going to check out some of these so where do you guys download your anime?

Watch "Hunter X Hunter" back in the days the action in it is different from what one may expect its more story and character development than anything else I can't recall any fight scene that really stood out in regards to "Fairy Tail" I use to read it up until last month I hope the anime don't screw it over.

Beating Angel Dokuro-Chan. you're welcome lol

Perfect Blue...I thought that was awesome when I saw it, big thriller movie thing. Sky crawlers 720p omg that look nice.

Tsubasa Chronicles is pretty girly, like most Clamp stuff, I like most of it though. Like how the storylines intersect with other manga/anime series they do as well, XXXholic was also very good I thought. Gonna start reading the manga soon

I am a lover of sports based anime like Major, Hungry Heart Wild Striker, Prince of Tennis to name a few so I hang around Saizen's irc channel a lot, it shocked me when I saw this series Shigurui-Death Frenzy in the list of series they have subbed.  From the first to the last episode I loved this show because of the realism it brought to the table, it is a samurai based show and it totally made me feel happy that I was not born in that place at that time.  See this show if you get a chance it is truly worth the download.

It should still be up there on irc or available on torrents.

Baki was hard btw , first like 13 episodes were a bit bad but after that it get amazing dread. I watched baki sametime i watched kenichi history's strongest disciple and it was equally as good. Btw if u havent watched soul eater out yet just go do it.

My 3 most recent animes (non obvious like fmab and melancholy) are Hakuouki - Great shinsengumi anime, fighting is fast brutal and precise. storyline decent and really starting to pick up.

Fairy tale - I actually just watched the episode that aired yesterday and oh god this anime just keeps getting better. Story based on mages/guilds/fantasy demons dragons stuff like that. At this moment really love how a lot of the characters old storylines coming together to form a huge on. Good fights, great jokes, good story. It seems a bit childish at first but it gets awesome.

Tales of sypmhonia- some of u may remember the rpg game i think it was ... fights look awesome, cant comment cuz i only seen bits but it looks awesome

Always with the appearance of 11-year-olds, they behave far more mature than they should be, never grow old, and seem to have supernatural power. What they have been seeking is a girl, and the only clue they have is a picture with a crescent moon. Now, in the year of 2012, an athletic boy named Tohma is about to be involved in this centuries-long mystery.

Cinematic Trailer: Fantastic Children (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95s0Wkzz-tU#)

Blassreiter will appeal to all those looking some serious action. The series is full of "waaaayz, you see dat!?!" moments. And the english IMO is superior to the Japanese one. Much like the dub for Gantz. Chuck full of profanity. . Fantastic Children on the other had will appeal more to those looking for a deep storyline from their anime. Definitely not for everyone. I for one only began to really enjoy it after the flashback episodes began. After that, I was hooked. Long story short, if you like Monster, you'd like this.

Blassreiter was o.k. nothing to write home about, I was expecting a much more climatic ending... that being said, it's a decent series. The other one... not my genre..

I always wondered what it would look like if a Gundam did a Shoryuken... I got an answer within the first 5 minutes. DAMN, hoss.

Blassreiter was pretty dang good IMO. Definitely wasn't just ok. the action was what made the series good. but i hadda admit, the ending was indeed anticlimactic. they could have done a lot more with it.

Lol my bad, my bad actually have this on my hdd and was supposed to put a post here in the Anime Suggestion Thread about it but forgot it with all the Bad Company 2 rotting my brain.

A great Samurai anime with lots of head rolling, crazy glue reattaching limb goodness is, Shigurui: Death Frenzy.  If someone already made a post about this please ignore but if you have never heard of this show give it a try you will enjoy it.

So yeah, I thought it was about time a new thread was made for members to share any worth-wild findings from the anime world. And who better to create such a thread that yours truly :sassy: I mean, I'm guessing there's no-one here who has a bigger series collection me....

Yes, that 591 shows and counting :ko: Anyway, enough of that, lets go on to the recommendations....

Shiki

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qgpNS_Uiii4

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iw5u3QVdHjA

Quote
Sotobamura is a small village with around 1300 inhabitants. It is a village which is connected to not even a single highway. An isolated village in which old customs, such as the burial of the dead, are still practiced. One day, the corpses of 3 persons are found. Although Ozaki Toshio, the village's lone doctor, feels uncertain, he treats the deaths as normal occurrences. However, in the days following, the villagers die one after the other. Is this mere coincidence, an epidemic, or something else entirely?

Absolutely loved this one. Story was intriguing with a HUGE cast of characters. Had me hooked from start to finish. Thinking of watching it again cuz it was that damn good. And the English dub was expertly done FYI, so no need to fear it. lol. Had some scenes of graphic violence and it's definitely a horror themed series, so if you don't mind that, watch it ASAP.

Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r21ekYTeTQU

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3vq3WH4Xn8

Quote
In the American underworld, Mafia leaders are being killed one after another, with rumours of “Inferno” and the organisation’s top assasssin “Phantom” circulating around them. A boy, traveling alone in America becomes involved in one of these incidents and unexpectedly encounters Phantom

Another great series with a good storyline. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Guin Saga

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJwj12YHyXo

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hfJLBQAX2yo

Quote
"The seal will be broken after many years". In the land of Nospherus, four heroes embark on a patch of destiny that will weave a new legend. The story follows Guin, a powerful swordsman with a leopard head, the adolescent royal twins Remus and Rinda, and the young and ambitious mercenary named Istvan. The Guin Saga is an epic heroic fantasy in the same vein as Robert E. Howard's Conan, the Barbarian. More than a hundred manga books strong, Guin's saga has sold more than twenty-five million copies in Japan.

Epic series.... with one problem. It's incomplete, ending with a pretty big cliffhanger. And apparently the author of the novels it's based on died a while back, so chances are that the series will never be completed. It's definitely still worth a look though. Being incomplete doesn't affect the quality at all. I mean look at Berserk. lol

Shiki and Phantom on my list as well.

Idk I think it's better for me to highlight my recommendations one by one and you could operate out of here. Also since I just wanna post one or two each more or so it won't be as much as yours I think :D

Plus I like to give attention to each title and starting with my next post I will make it more in depth.

@ Archer. Yeah, u can post ur recommendations in separate threads if u want. i didn't want to go that route as I have quite a few shows to post and didn't want to clutter the forum. and once u watch Shiki, tell me what u think. if Another is anything close to it, then it's a winner.

@ Berzerk. I was talk about just the tv series. even though it ended with a cliffhanger so many years ago, ppl still consider it one of the best out of Japan.

Monster

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9aS-EgdAq6U

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RvQbqFQJC1Y

Quote
Kenzou Tenma, a Japanese brain surgeon in Germany, had it all: incredible skill at his work, a rich and beautiful fiancee, and a promising career at his hospital. However, after becoming disenchanted by hospital politics, he chose to save the life of a young boy who got shot in the head over the life of the mayor. As a result he lost the support of the hospital director, as well as his position in the hospital and his fiance. A short time later, the hospital director and the doctors that replaced him were murdered, and once again he was catapulted back onto the top. But as the chief suspect of the murders, Tenma did not get a easy life. As a matter of fact, it seems that the boy he saved was much more than he had appeared to be... Now to clear his name and to correct his past mistake, Tenma must get to the bottom of these and other murders, and investigate the truth of the Monster who is behind all of this.

Amazing series with one of the deepest stories I've ever seen in an anime. Not for those with ADD as you need to pay attention to understand and appreciate.

Le Chevalier D'Eon

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJcHOxADC3I

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O84kUun_mzQ

Quote
In the 18th Century, just before the French revolution, multiple religious cults of the dark side were engaged in secret maneuvers under the name of Revolution. "Le Chevalier D`Eon" (Knight D`Eon) a diplomat and a special agent working for Louis XIV, is fighting against those cults, and also on a mission to find the killer of his own sister. A mysterious cult organization called "Rose Cross" stands in his way, using vicious powers to create a dark creature, "Gargoyle" to take over Europe.

Le Chevalier d`Eon, Charles de Beaumont, was a real-life diplomat and spy in 18th century Europe, most famous for being of questionable gender. D`Eon worked as a spy, politician and soldier for King Louis XV for many years, before returning to France during the rule of King Louis XVI. After his return to France he lived and dressed as a woman. It was not until his death that doctors confirmed that he was a man.

Great series with a good mix of action and story. Been meaning to watch this one again, cuz it's that damn good. Highly recommended.

Mushi-Shi

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=StCN_4qWfWE

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AapZE-LHUdI

Quote
They are neither plants nor animals. They differ from other forms of life such as the micro-organisms and the fungi. Instead they resemble the primeval body of life and are generally known as "Mushi". Their existence and appearance are unknown to many and only a limited number of humans are aware of them. Ginko is a "Mushi-shi" who travels around to investigate and find out more about the "Mushi". In the process, he also lends a helping hand to people who face problems with supernatural occurances which may be related to the "Mushi".

Brilliant series. Been in my top 5 for years. Each episode is a different story in from the travels of the series protagonist Ginko. Every episode is intriguing and skillfully written. Can't recommend this one enough.

Would def make things easier but.....those are a lot O_o unless we choose some each to handle. However I don't like burying posts with others. Genre will be included as part of my future posts anyway. I'll stick to single still yes since I cover a range.

Monster is an epic series btw, storytelling-wise.

To me, putting each series into categories would require too much work. Plus, I'm not a fan of certain genres, eg Shojo. Hadda come good for me to truly love a series in that group. I rather put all recommendations under one thread rather than having users open a bunch of threads just to read what a show is about. Plus, looking through the forums, I notice that a lot of the single series threads rarely pass 2 posts, unless these really popular. That's just clogging up the forum IMO.

Monster was epic. twists and turns galore. epic storytelling to be had. 10/10 worthy.

Also agree with Rage, this forum kinda cluttered (I think it needs a clean up actually) if anything we could post the genre for each anime when it is recommended, clearly and coherently.

Sword Art Online had so much potential to be beyond epic but they mired it with a ton of emo side quests.

It's like it was lost looking for an identity between Shōjo and Shōnen.

Out of the 9 episodes I've seen thus far, three felt like the main story arc while the rest had the quality of fillers.

Those three easily would be rated 9 out of 10 while the rest more in the meh territory of 5 out of 10

Here are some Ive watched, currently watching..

1. Fairy Tail

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eckmwr1K2uU

Quote
The series follows the adventures of Lucy Heartfilia, a teenage wizard who joins the titular wizards' guild and teams up with fellow guild member Natsu Dragneel as he searches for the dragon Igneel

This takes awhile to pick up, but when it does, it is pretty engaging. Love the characters, but this is shonen through and through. It aint deep, but its pretty fun. Reminds me of One Piece minus the tremendous amounts of filler.

2. Ao No Exorcist

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xShUEipYT-A

Quote
The story revolves around Rin Okumura, a teenager who discovers he is the son of Satan born from a human woman and is the inheritor of Satan's powers. When Satan kills his guardian, Rin decides to become an exorcist in order to defeat his father.

3. Fate Zero

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAXkEN2gxfg&list=FLUipj-BXjBjJiWRWn_2Szhg&index=16&feature=plpp_video

Quote
Fate/Zero takes place 10 years prior to the events of Fate/stay night, detailing the events of the 4th Holy Grail War in Fuyuki City.[2]. The War of the Holy Grail is a contest in which seven mages summon seven Heroic Spirits to compete to obtain the power of the "Holy Grail," which grants a miracle. After three inconclusive wars for the elusive Holy Grail, the Fourth War commences.

This anime was just pure awesome. Action was extremely well choreographed, the story flowed and kept me engaged, and the characters were all well done. I was just pissed when it ended. I want moar!

Its a prequel to Fate stay the night, which ive heard was mess, (Didn't watch yet though) but dont let that keep u away. I highly recommend this.

@ Berzerk. haven't started any of those shows yet. i have them, but i'm kinda waiting for Ao No Exorcist and Fate/Zero to be dubbed (yes i said dubbed. u try watching 500+ show subbed and talk. lol).

Speaking of the ludicrous number of episodes...might be a good idea to include that info in the post.

Just realized Fairy Tail clocking 140+ episodes.

Not willing to make that kind of commitment just yet, lol

Some broad categories maybe?

1 - 26

27 - 52

52+

Just so we know what sort of thing we are getting ourselves into when we start watching.

sweet @ 25 episodes

I find that to be the sweet spot

Enough time to develop a story and characters without fillers and that "young and restless" style dragging out of scenes that you often see in the 100+ anime series.
Title: Re: The Definitive Anime Recommendation Thread!
Post by: Rebirthoftheundead on September 09, 2012, 10:03:53 AM
Beserk all those series you posted was rrrrrreeallly good

Fairy tail - Its a good anime but i find it very repetitive tho. Basically they always end up fighting a reallly strong opponent and natsu gets some random powerup during the fight that makes him win e.g eating something with and attribute of fire

Ao No exorcist - Really good short series very different storyline from what you usually get but was well done

Fate/zero - alittle slow pace at times but was still worth the watch

idk about watching dubbed things nah i hate that. I took in one piece from eps 1 - 563+ all subbed

Oh btw guys the near part of Roruni Kenshin is out the kyoto Ova..still raw tho
@wyatt - you know they have to put alot of side series to fill up the series for a show right? Almost all anime has that

Exactly. Which is why I tend to frequent those more or for the most 50eps. Making my way through 2 new titles as we speak and a few movies, all within the sci-fi genre so my next post is for the sci-fi fans.

I always say that ppl who don't like dubs haven't watched a dubbed series in a long time. I switched from subbed only to dubs because of the improvements in overall voice acting. Sure u still get the lame ones like Naruto, but it's VERY rare these days. Shows like Lagann, Ippo and Hellsing are just some of the shows that the English dubs are just as good (if not better in some parts) as the Japanese.

I'll start putting the episode number to my posts too.

@wyatt - you know they have to put alot of side series to fill up the series for a show right? Almost all anime has that

I don't understand, what do you mean?

You said sword art had alot of side stories but yeh alot of anime are doing that to stretch the series...take fate/zero for ex the entire first season was nothing literally

hmm, well I've found that to be true in the long running series. Fillers galore.

The shorter ones, 1 - 26 episodes, then to have solid arcs with tighter stories. Little room for shenanigans

Berzerk is a prime example

On the sub v dub discussion, count me in with the sub crowd.

In fact, I even watch English movies with subs, lol

Break Blade was decent. Loved the action and music. Black Cat was cool too, but I wasn't the biggest fan. Still a good watch though. Code Geass was absolutely epic ..... until season 2. Things went downhill from there. Haven't watched Gundam Unicorn yet. Tryin to look at all the Gundam series/movies in proper order, so it might be some time before I see it.

but of course @ OVA.

Some of the BEST anime ever came in the form of OVA.

Namely, "Rurouni Kenshin: Trust and Betrayal".

Definitive Anime

Tied right up there with Berserk (in my mind) as the best anime ever.

Had some free time which I spent sampling a considerable amount of this season's titles, and came across a gem in the pile of average-ness:

Zetsuen no Tempest (The Civilization Blaster)

http://youtu.be/pAx6e19ycE4 (http://youtu.be/pAx6e19ycE4)

Quote
The story revolves around Mahiro Fuwa, a teenager whose family was mysteriously murdered one year before, and his friend Yoshino Takigawa. Mahiro is contacted by Hakaze Kusaribe, the leader of the Kusaribe clan who was left stranded on an unknown deserted island by her followers, and agrees to help Hakaze in exchange for her help to find out the culprit for the death of his family. Upon learning of his friend's intentions, Yoshino joins him on his quest to stand against the Kusaribe clan who intends to awaken the "Tree of Zetsuen" whose power can bring ruin to the entire world.

Several dialogues and plot elements in Zetsuen no Tempest pay homage to the works of William Shakespeare.

Only 6 eps in, but the show is a keeper for sure. Plot is intriguing, took it's time to set things up in the 1st episode but it was worth it. Great atmosphere, effects, lovely character design and some fantastic classical music. A+, so far

http://myanimelist.net/anime/14345/Btooom!/

Quote
In the blink of the mind's eye, Ryouta Sakamoto suddenly finds himself transported from playing the hit Btoom! video game to being stranded on a mysterious island, equipped with a day's worth of provisions, a bag of bombs, a strange crystal embedded in his left hand and a huge gaping hole in his memory. But it doesn't take long to figure out what's going on, especially after the first person Ryouta meets tries to kill him. Someone is attempting to recreate the ultra-violent Btoom! game in real life, and the island has been filled with an army of other unwilling players, each armed with one of the multiple variants of explosive weapons called BIM. Fortunately, Ryouta's an ace Btoom! player, but this insane version of the game has no reset switch or second lives, and there's only one way off the island: kill seven other people before they can kill you! Can Ryouta repurpose his game based skills fast enough to survive?

HIGHLY recommended if you liked shows like Gantz and Mirai Nikki.

Things have been a bit busy anime watching slowly happening, these are my two latest offerings-

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YLDguewPgpA

I remember Arcman wanted Starships? :laughing7: Outlaw Star has a lot. I do like to take in some vintage anime sometimes, this one's from the late 90's (99 i believe) great space western.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ug51_Kt1eFs

^^This one however is a deviation from my usual anime M.O. Wouldn't usually watch these sort of anime but i needed one to help me unwind and this one had me rolling. A series of random stories revolving around the same characters each time, was so random at time it just awesome lol.

Will be back with more soon  :cowboy:

Outlaw Star was boss. Not a fan of space anime, but I liked it. Never saw or hard of Daily Lives. Shigurui wasgood too. Really dark, realistic anime, just the way I like it. Right now I'm watching....

Hakuouki: An anime based on the Shinsengumi. Decent action with a cool storyline.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7S_hmMnbio

Sengoku Basara: Anime based on the Capcom videogame. Not realistic in the slightest, but as long as the action is good, I don't mind. And this one has it in droves.

The 2012 reboot of
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure

is all sorts of awesome

Quote
This is the story of the Joestar family, and their battles against bizarre enemies. Jonathan Joestar's battle against the vampire Dio Brando starts it all, and it continues into roughly each second generation of Joestars through all parts of the story.

I watch the 5 episodes this week and the series have epic potential so far. unique story line, humans vs titans, unusal weapons and equipments, outstanding animation. Lets hope the author doesn't get writers block after a while like other manga.

A man say 'why couldn't we lead with THAT!?'  :laughing7:

I figure he was able to wine-up on dat too, because of its  weakened state, from transforming two times in such quick succession.  Not to take anything away from his awesomeness though.

A word of caution:  DO NOT READ THE WIKI!!!
I inadvertently stumbled upon a note revealing the Female Titan's identity.  :(
Based on what I read, we may see this within the next two or three episodes.

Well some idiot on Facebook posted a pic revealing the identity of the Titan for everyone to see.

Needless to say, quite a few expletives were written in response to that post. -__-

I believe next episode would either have the reveal or lead up to it. Is it true this series finishes at episode 26?

Well this one STARTED with a torpedo barrage AND a missile-swarm...

Arpeggio Of Blue Steel: Ars Nova

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30GHXmIyWJk

...and this one, while being diametrically opposite to ANYTHING I would normally follow (anime-wise), is viciously entertaining...and funny...

Kill la Kill

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ClQ7zkHtXY

There's some members of the Gurren Lagan team doing this one, so the art/animation style is immediately noticeable.
I'm really interested to see where the story in this one goes.

Wda Kill La Kill from makers of Gurren Lagann? I dey dread.

In other news I advise everyone to try Hunter x Hunter, ESPECIALLY the current arc. Actually enjoying it more than I did Titan.

Is it necessary to watch previous episodes of 'Hunter x Hunter' to get into the current arc, Berzerk?

it would help, but its not totally necessary tbh. but some of the previous arcs were very decent, like the phantom troupe arc.

you didn't need to remove it after i posted a nice review as requested.

As per additional request here is a short list of fall's new anime releases that has potential and i keep my fingers cross that it turns out to be awesome:

Strike the Blood
First episode was interesting
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YoqgLCATqUk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YoqgLCATqUk)

Kyoukai no Kanata
This one has a little too much moe for me but you guys might like it an interesting concept. Girl last of her clan uses her blood as a weapon(deadman wonderland anyone?) to slay Yokai
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ShhiZ_HCJcE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ShhiZ_HCJcE)

Unbreakable Doll Machine
Started off weird but turned out to be good
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v3EMc5EFUYo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v3EMc5EFUYo)

BlazBlue Alter Memory
didnt see this one yet but will edit when i do
What It’s About in One Sentence: When the man with the world's biggest bounty on his head surfaces, the strongest fighters in the world converge on this location to take him down and collect the bounty.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKsR8rD4GpA#t=70 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKsR8rD4GpA#t=70)

Gundam Build Fighters
Not sure how i feel about this, Im am a fan of Gundam for sure Mech ftw! but this is fought in a digital world soo...decide for yourself
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5iNyI7P390#t=65 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5iNyI7P390#t=65)

Arcmanov already listed Arpeggio Of Blue Steel which looks awesome need to take that in ASAP, anyone could tell me how it was?

Hijime No Ippo is back and was an excellent anime do not be reluctant to try it just because its based on boxing.

Hunter X Hunter is off the charts right now! i suggest you take it all in (the 2011 version) things will take a Dark twist at the chimera arc and make you literally drop your jaw

The rest IMO is not wort listing because I am not sure how you guys feel about comedy/suspense etc of other anime's. However i did watch almost all of the new releases so I can post additional content if you guys want

Whoa hold up,why skip every previous arc? If you jus  jump in from chimera ant arc you would be lost, yuh need to know what is nen and who is who,why these children goin through this?if yuh really just watching the show to be able to talk about it then the earliest tug shouldered from is heavens arena arc then just use a wiki to fill in the gaps.

Btw kuroko no basuke season 2 very dread series if yuh didn't like basketball before we'll get ready to love it against your will.

Here's one for the alien sci-fi fans.  Aka Tetsuwan Birdy: Decode.

Only found out this after i started watching, the last battle scene in the 2nd season inspired the final fight in Man Of Steel. Im only on season 1 atm lol.

lil Hunter X flavor from the older version.

Personally found that the Spider Arc was handled better in the original hunter x series.

Don't think this has been mention in this section yet ( I checked, only mention was a torrent download by someone in an unrelated topic lol) You know a good anime when the English dub doesn't suck.

Was totally blown away by this, went in thinking it was some slice of life etc genre but it turned out to be a mix of styles and tones with separate stories that all intertwine and some of the craziest characters ever, When the series was over I was sad to find out there are no plans for a 2nd season......yet anyway. Considering checking out the manga  to continue following the story.

Good and Decent anime of this season so far.

1.JoJo's Bizzare Adventure: Stardust Crusaders (Watch this)
2.Captain Earth (Good so far)
3.Blade and Soul(Meh)
4.Break Blade(Good so far)
5.Black Bullet(Good so far)

DBZ Kai Buu Saga(Is Dbz)
Fairy Tail(Is Fairy Tail)

Blade and Soul kinda disappointing right now,it have potential but fromwhat I watched, it's really shallow. With a protagonist that have little to no dialogue the show only good for Tits, Ass, awkward ass, frequently slow story progression and well animated fight scenes. If yyuh is somebody who like shows heavy on plot yuh not goin and enjoy this.If yuh in it for girls barely clothed fightin it out then yuh will enjoy.

You will enjoy it if you played CBT and played the storymode, a lot of the story from the game is left out which kind of annoys me.
Aside from your list (great picks btw ) I enjoyed
1) Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei
2) Chaika –The Coffin Princess
that is it your list pretty much hit the nail on its head
