Seems every developer and his bonzai plant is working on a Dota Killer.
This latest attempt, called Heroes of NewErth is by none other than S2 Games.
The same people that brought us the genre defying multiplayer masterpiece, Savage. (also featuring a land called New Erth)
This isn't vaporware either. The game is currently in beta. From reports, it is wtfpwnage.
Billed as a straight clone, don't expect much to change from the core gameplay, rather HON is more or less a fresh coat of paint and audio bites. Ain't nothing wrong with that.
Though this video didn't leave me overly convinced, I'm keen to take HON out for a spin as it addresses my key issue with the original dota. Namely, its dated appearance. Swear I have mame roms with better graphics.

OK, so I've gotten in on the beta and this game kicks ass!!
It is dota 2.0. Polished and refined to a diamond like quality.
I think S2 has a winner on their hands.
Played a game with Tempest (an enigma clone). All his moves in tact just graphically enhanced. They even had the necromicon, now called the Puzzle Box. I prefer the old name, but no matter.
Similar creeps, denying, tower denying. Almost a perfect replica of the maps and bush creep locations, river, the works.
Did I mention the game kicks ass?
Not to be missed if you're a dota fan (or a fan of multiplayer gaming on the whole)

How to get in on the beta?

Jump on facebook and join the official group with the swiftness. When they hit 10000 fans they gonna give out beta keys, otherwise you need to find someone with invites.

Found the nevermore clone, SoulEater. I love what they've done with the place.
I see the facebook group blew past 10,000 fans yesterday (up to 12,000 last I checked).
Should see a ton of people joining the beta as a result. Won't be disappointed.
note, the instructions for the beta key is under "updates" and not your regular inbox
Also, the link is only valid for 36 hours. Move fast!

Talk about a DOTA facelift...too bad the beta doesn't have LAN support, otherwise this woulda run for tonight's LAN for sure!

HON will definitely be my new lan party game once it launches. I played with the Luna clone and it is excellent. Its still need some tweaking (well at least if they want to keep her similar to her DOTA character) , she seems to be a bit more powerful than her dota counterpart.
Combining items is so much easier, can be items from within the recipe.
Stat tracking to check a player, win, loss, quit, etc percentage.
This is exactly what I wanted for DOTA a long while now.

Well it shows a person quit percentage so if someone has a high quit percentage u can not allow them to join plus it has a noob filter to only allow high level ppl to join

Yeah, and since you'll be going legit with this game, the leaver percentage would be much less. Persistent accounts online tends to sharply reduce the leave-erage.

daemon x says we supposedly get more keys everytime we go up a level. Didn't test that theory yet though.

lol @ free. That would be a serious gift to the gaming fraternity. All that work for gratis.
if judging from s2's past, I'd expect one of two options:
Either:
1) US$20 to buy the game
or
2) Free to play, US$20 to get premium content (items, persistent leveling, etc...)
No matter which way they go, they'll get my money. (just as they did with savage)

Heroes of NewErth (Hon) is now Free2Play.
You read right. The infamous Dota clone now costs all of zero dollars.
Following in the same vein as Team Fortress 2 and League of Legends.
The free2play movement seems to be taking the world by storm (and I'm not complaining).

Honestly I was under a PS3 rock lol takin a lil rest on Pc gamin till battlefield role out but i started back play HoN recently.

They have taken league of legends model and replicated it exactly. I know imitation is the most sincere form of flattery but this is ridiculously.
Plagiarism to the max.
That said, its still the DOTA clone that some of us have come to know and love. Polished and refined. HD graphics and loads of new content (skins, voice overs, etc..)
I would strongly recommend a moba fan to pick this up at the awesome price of zero dollars.
With Dota 2 on the horizon being released by Valve shortly, this might be the last hurrah for both HoN and LoL.

What i was told about HoN and LoL, its the same people who worked on Dota made these 2 so i wouldn't call it plain plagiarism outright. The reasons they were made as completely separate games was some fall out with Blizzard (no surprise there).
I would think they were exactly the same game due to this fact. Heck, if i made a map for WC3 and wasnt gettin any money from it, i would go make my own damn game to do so. Especially since so many people played it.
But yes, Valve did good in gettin Dota 2 under their belt, but as someone on Facebook posted about this, because HoN and Lol require the calculator type PC to play, it MAY take a while for Dota 2 to pick up (locally that is). Although, i checked the system reqs and i see that a scientific calculator type PC shall more than suffice for it. Meh..
We all kno what kills the Trinidadian gamer.. Price! So HoN and LoL shall survive for a while.
At a 50-60 USD price for Dota 2.. GG

and I know the history between hon and lol very intimately. It's very complex and rife with drama.
suffice to say, LoL is by far the bigger game now, with 15 million+ players. It was the first to go the free2play route and prospered as a result.
HoN stayed in beta for an extended period but took a big hit when they moved int pay2play with the final product.
Their transition to free2play may be too little too late with Dota 2. UNLESS, as you say the price is US$50-60
I'm hoping/assuming Dota 2 would be free2play

One of the biggest Swedish online stores komplett.se has added DOTA 2 as a pre-order state item. Moreover, the price has been set to 60$(USD). As expected from that podcast, the price will be around 60$ (depending on taxes, etc) and will not have a subscription. Apparently, komplett.se has answered and confirmed that this is the "official price" of the game and that it is based on the recommendation by Valve themselves.

i download and play HoN yesterday. Went 15-2-13 in my first game not knowing anything about who i chose, and what to buy. Guess everyone else in that battle.
I find the battlefield is too clustered compared to LOL and the minimap is harder to read.
The graphics are much better though. Upgrading LOL to that level would be ideal.

I've succumbed to downloading and started playing with my brother and some friends. Been using Mumble as well to play. It feels good to get back into the DOTA scene.. now to make sure Crackers and WarOne don't realize im playing before the call the wrath of SC2 down on my poor soul.

So i've been playing HoN a lil more and more. Have brutal_it and ZusE on mumble and they're there all the time with some friends. Also been playing with my younger brother and some friends. Anyone else playing HoN? I add suzieboy a few times but never see him on =(
