Portal 2 is official, first image inside
By Andrew Webster | Last updated about 2 hours ago

Valve has been teasing something Portal-related all week, starting with some mysterious updates followed by a brand new ending for the game. And if all of this led you to believe that the puzzle-based shooter would be getting a sequel, well, you'd be right.

The news was revealed via Game Informer, which will be featuring the game on its next cover. No real details have been revealed, although the game will be a "full-fledged, standalone sequel," as opposed to the original, which came packaged with The Orange Box. We should have plenty of good information when the magazine hits newsstands though, as it features a full 12-page spread on the game.

For now, we can do little but speculate, and revel in the glorious cover image.

Hell yeah. Loved the first one. Looking forward to GLADOS being...still alive...and present in this sequel =]

Loved Portal.  Buying this.

I was wondering what the two updates this week for Portal were.  The kinda hoops men had to
jump through to get to the info eh...Valve hid the info in audio recordings, which had to be translated
into images using special apps, and then those cryptic images had to be spliced together to reveal even
yet another piece of the puzzle.  I guess the geeks on the Steam forums finally figured it all out.

Nah they didn't figure it ALL out...
the images lead to a BBS number that ppl connected to and got some ASCII art. etc. etc.
But it also had a progress bar, which upon reaching 100% they released the news.. Portal 2 comin!

A theory however is that the progress bar was more than just that... it was actualy GLaDos rebooting from somewhere else!

portal fans should really give the forums a read (as though u haven't, if not... u not portal fan :p)

Doing science: Jonathan Coulton to create music for Portal 2
By Anders Bylund | Last updated about 3 hours ago
Portal was something of a perfect storm. Game mechanics that felt new, a story that tied into the world of Half-Life, a length that didn't outstay its own welcome, and to really drive the point home the end credits featured the instantly memorable song "Still Alive" by Jonathan Coulton. The song and the game built on the success of one another, creating one of the most memorable moments in modern gaming.

In a phone interview last Thursday, I brought up "Still Alive" and asked Coulton whether he'd be interested in doing a follow-up. "I will be doing music for Portal 2 as well, yeah. You know, I think Valve and I were both really happy with how 'Still Alive' turned out, and it was an overwhelmingly popular response to something we thought was maybe gonna be a bit weird and unusual," he explained.

"We weren't sure how it was gonna go. And so it's gonna be hard to live up to that success, and it was sort of a surprise to everyone, us included, so ... I don't know, we'll see. The sequel is always a troublesome thing, and sequels are rarely better than the original. Empire Strikes Back is the only exception that I can think of."

With such a high bar set by his first entry into the world of video game music, anything else is going to have to be incredible to live up to the promise of the first Portal release. Still, new Coulton is a good thing, and it's great to hear that he'll be back in the sequel.

Portal 2 news: shortest Valve delay ever, destruction of humankind
By Ben Kuchera | Last updated 3 days ago

Those of us looking forward to Portal 2—and that is most likely all of us—will have to wait a little longer. Valve has announced that the game has been delayed until April 18 of 2011, and the company assures us that this is both a positive step for the company and the doom of everyone else. I'll let you read the announcement for yourself:

Valve today announced that Portal 2— the sequel to the ground-breaking title that won over 30 game of the year awards, despite missing its original ship date—will now be available the week of April 18th, 2011. This two month slip not only marks the shortest delay in Valve's proud tradition of delays, it represents the approaching convergence of Valve Time and Real Time. Though this convergence spells doom for humanity, it will not affect the new Portal 2 release date.
So there you go. We've been excited about the game since it was announced. A standalone Portal is a big undertaking, and we look forward to playing the final release whenever it's ready... before we're annihilated in the name of science.

Cross platform multiplayer (http://techreport.com/discussions.x/20259)?   NICE!!!

It's only co-op, but still...

This was quite a surprise.
It's the future we all at some point imagined, where you buy a game in the store and are able to play it on all the platforms you have at no additional cost with cross platform communication.
Ok Ok, it not that great "yet".

Portal 2 (PS3) will ship with a steamplay license so that you can download the game on your Steam equipped PC. In addition to that, Portal 2 PC players will be able to communicate and play with the console players.
Also save files on PS3 will be stored on the Steam cloud service so that you never lose your saves if for some reason your PS3 gets toast.

GG Valve!
Here's hoping more developers follow suit with this great initiative.

ent.

Steam is to Microsoft like White is to Black.

They say, given enough time, a hero becomes a villain. Let's hope that never happens to our beloved steam.

^yea rumor has it they releasing Portal 2 today or tomorrow. An early surprise release.

As for the PS3 version which comes FREE with a PC Steam copy,
Here's a Q&A from Valve on little details:

I think it'll release next week still, seen a couple of their games being able to preload from almost a week before, and still released on schedule. I won't complain if it comes out later today though.

*looks at preloaded copy and waits patiently*

You can actually help speed up the release date.
All you have to do is complete a requirement in any of the potato sack games.
The more ppl do it, the faster the game will be released.

Quote from: Playstation.Blog
Valve Software has repeatedly described Portal 2 for the PS3 as being “the best console version of the game.” And for good reason, given that you’ll get a free PC or Mac version of Portal 2 along with your PS3 copy, as well as exclusive cross-platform PS3-to-PC co-op gameplay and voice chat, Steamworks features and much more.

Just finished this absolute MASTERPIECE of a game.

EASILY the best game I've played for 2011.  GOTY material for sure,
and I haven't even touched the multiplayer.

The game's script, especially Wheatley, is top notch, and seriously laugh-out-loud funny.

I don't think I've had this much fun with a game's SP in YEARS.
Some of the test chambers were beat-in-2-mins easy, while some
were downright FIENDISH.  I literally had to pause the game, talk a walk outside,
and then come back to attack the puzzle from a different angle.

The story has a nice twist in it as well, and the ending is more epic than the first.

Hats off to Valve for a truly wonderful sequel.  Head and shoulders above the first game.

11 out of 10.

The multiplayer maps are honestly fun. However, I'm just waiting for custom puzzles to become available...

The SP ending is almost completely more epic than the original, except for the song.

However, turrets at the end = win! :D

Portal is used to teach science as Valve gives game away for limited time
By Ben Kuchera | Published about an hour ago
Portal is one of the rare games that can change the way we think about the world, how we view the physical space around us. Valve is now offering the first Portal title for free, provided that you download a copy of the program for either Mac or PC before September 20. This is the full version of the game, and it will remain in your library after that date; you simply must download the title before next Tuesday.

"One of the biggest challenges in teaching science, technology, engineering, and math is capturing the students' imaginations long enough for them to see all of the possibilities that lie ahead," the company wrote on the Learn with Portals site. "Using interactive tools like the Portal series to draw them in makes physics, math, logic, spatial reasoning, probability, and problem-solving interesting, cool, and fun, which gets us one step closer to our goal—engaged, thoughtful kids!"

The Evergreen school visits Valve
This isn't idle talk; Valve has invited schoolchildren into the company's offices to help them create levels for Portal. This instruction goes deeper than just allowing kids to fool around with a video game, as the children learned about spatial reasoning, engineering, and even mathematics. It's an important lesson: what might seem like a dry subject in the classroom has amazing applications outside of it. It's one thing to try to explain to a child how air flows over moving objects, and it's quite another to twist the fins on the body of a model rocket to show them how to create torque.

This is a great way to spread the love of science and gaming to children, and if you haven't played Portal until this point, you now have no excuse.

Since I already own the game I can't really check, so go ahead and get a free copy! sound off it its hogwash
