time for a lil discussion

deciding what 2 cards to use full time..

2 480s
or
2 295s..

what and why ??
Title: Re: captainchris's rig build thread
Post by: Spazosaurus on September 21, 2010, 11:16:38 AM
^^ dx11 ftw.
Title: Re: captainchris's rig build thread
Post by: Doomtack on September 21, 2010, 11:22:08 AM
Fermi Architecture makes up for the lack in horsepower imo. plus DX11 titles will really shine (DX10 as well because of the caching system implemented for the shaders)
Title: Re: captainchris's rig build thread
Post by: captainchris on September 21, 2010, 12:28:22 PM
2 good points i alrdy know

i guess its good consideration as well...

the 295s are good card as well

Title: Re: captainchris's rig build/ progress benchies thread...
Post by: Arcmanov on September 22, 2010, 12:47:21 AM
Yuh lookin good.  I am loving that CPU's stock speed.  Should make it easy to cross 4 GHz.

...and that 2nd GTX 480 will be murda.  I'm predicting a Vantage score somewhere in the region of about 27-28K (with proper CPU OC of course).

Try not to burn anything eh...them shits aint cheap.
Title: Re: captainchris's rig build/ progress benchies thread...
Post by: captainchris on September 22, 2010, 08:46:49 AM
yeh i wont burn or damage anything, thanks for the warning!  .. have enough OC experience for dat..and good cooling.. :) ( knocks on wood )

but i`m gonna go at the vantage score with quad sli.... and then the gtx 480..

watever makes the highest score..with the requested screen shots of course..

i`ll ask u guys to post

Lookin good hoss.  That CPU break 4 GHz without even requiring more than 1.3V Vcore.  Now THAT is impressive.

...and I knew them 480s woulda be kickass eh, but that performance is just plain ridiculous.

How's your temps though?

Not to rain on your parade, but I found that problem sizes that low do not stress the cpu enough and while it the test will pass, the machine will still crash eventually under heavy gaming. This is why I personally never use a problem size less than 20k.

5 runs >20k is a joke. 1hr with a 23k size and no errors and THEN i'd be impressed.

Nice well u in the game. I had a couple crashes in the earlies after linx passed small problem sizes but the system was still slightly unstable.

Just thought I would share my experience.

but i ended up sellin it off cuz i realize it WAS over kill

i know exactly wat i need for phys-x
but i am also open to suggestions........

wat card u guy think i shud get.....

gts 250...

9600gt

9600 GSO

wat?

i find not enough games utilize physx properly to warrant ah dedicated physx card...
However, it would be nice to get the maximum performance out of metro and mafia 2 maybe, but that's about it...
Title: Re: captainchris's rig build/ progress benchies.( 4.3ghz linX 30min run )
Post by: rassmatic on September 28, 2010, 10:41:27 PM
try to get a 9800GT cheap if u could. if u look for some physx performance benchmarks online, u'd see that the extra cuda cores (112 as opposed to the 9600's 64) gives it added performance in games that utilizes the tech. i use a 9800gt for physx and it makes Mafia 2 so much sexier.

If its only for Physx (which in my opinion is totally unnecessary) then the cheaper one of course.

Yeah, go with the cheaper. The amount on memory on the GPU makes no difference. I wouldn't even buy it new if I were you. Probably would have checked tuner or Hard O/C for one. But if you have the money, then go for it.

On a side not to Arc, did you downgrade from 2 5850s to a GTX 295 ???

Well, I didn't exactly have the HAF-X money there waiting, so something had to go.

Its only temporary, because I borrow that 295.  I'm patiently awaiting ATI's 68xx series. :)

thanks guys! will keep it updated, there is the plan of gettin the power into the ride today, bought an inverter that shud cover the system pretty good. as well i got a false floor in the bay area with the amps so the inverter will connect there.

as for cooling, the 80mm red intake and the 80mm rear exhaust will cover just great! that cpu also has as5 on it and the cooler got the copper core, not the newer shitty aluminum thingy..

this would mean i am and will be chopping up my case and doing some mods within the new few weeks, i have also pushed back my rig being up from this week to next week unfortunately. :(

Okay...so you 'crosssfired' the 6990 with...what exactly?  The benchmark doesn't exactly say.

...but to what end?  'Just' for benchies?

I thought a 6990 was pretty kickass all by itself?

Yes it is pretty kick ass. Just had the plan in mind as kept going towards it......building in phases..
It is tri fire with another 6970. I WOULD not buy another videocard for benching pal.

Soon to be cooled with water as well and I still have to order more of these :

And finish my side panel. Carbon fiber biznazz
Work in progress. I am not planing to upgrade video wise for a while...mobo and cpu yes...

Oh, don't get me wrong.  I agree wholeheartedly, but personally I consider Tri-SLI/Crossfire a waste of
money, and power too, unless you're gaming on a screen greater than 30 inches, or better yet,  a truly monstrous Eyefinity setup.

Plus I did get top spot on the vantage thread with ppl who actually use their PCs for gaming eh...so..... With the recent release of the 680 I am officially sold..That right, heading over to the dark side real soon. I have a 6970 catching dust.......

Looking into these as well :

My rig currently has a Cooler Master Silent Pro M 1000W PSU in it.  The Silent Pro series is rock-solid, so I'd immediately pick that one.

Boss price too.

So dudes, been reading up on whether the 3930k or 3960x is my new CPU and for the love of NOTHING, I am convinced that the 3960x is worth 500USD more. NOT!

See for yourselves :http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/core-i7-3960x-3930k_8.html#sect1

typical review like that mean others, its hotter and only ahead by few seconds as well as they both have the same OC capabilities..

3930k.. I'M SOLD!! GG !

Your memory clock on the 2nd GPU is showing up higher than the 1st. Is that intentional? Or it doesnt matter?
