Title: Watch Netflix in Trinidad on PS3,PC, XBOX 360, etc.
Post by: Eroo on January 09, 2011, 12:51:52 PM
I should have written this guide a while now but was waiting till I used it for a while to confirm that it works good. Note the method outlined here is not free but it is the best method out of all I've tried.

There are two problems with using Netflix in Trinidad
 1. Ip address checking for region
 2. Netflix payment wants a US issued credit card

1. There is a site http://unblock-us.com (http://unblock-us.com). This site was made to allow Canadians use the American Netflix but it works for other countries as well. This is what I use to bypass the ip address checking. They offer a 1 week trial so you can try it out and decide for yourself if it is worth it. It normally cost US5.99 a month. To use it you change your DNS to 208.122.23.22, 208.122.23.23.

This is a lot better than running your system through a vpn because most vpns are slow or very costly and route ALL your traffic through the vpn. This means if you want to game online you have to change back your settings.

This method by just changing your DNS means everything on your network works as normal, when you go to netflix, their DNS reroutes it to their server, initializes the connection and then transfers back to Netflix's servers. This allows it to stream as fast as a native Netflix connection as I've been able to view HD streams without stutter (something I cant even do on youtube 480p sometimes) on a 5Mbit connection.

This works on PS3 and Xbox 360 as well and I dont see why it wont work on Wii too. The only small issue with viewing it on one of these devices is the service works by your ip address. Most of us have a dynamic ip address that changes once a week or once a month (maybe longer). If it does change all you do is go on your PC login and it will map your account to your new ip address.

2. Netflix payment. Netflix wants an American issued credit card. Unblock-us lists a method for bypassing this using ENTROPAY. I didn't use their method but have used Entropay before for use with the PSN.
What I did was sign up for the Netflix trial and used my paypal account as payment type. This worked fine until my 1 month Netflix trial was up and they told me my paypal was not a valid payment option. I then used my local credit card and just used the zipcode of my skybox and miraculously it WORKED!!.

I really love Netflix and considering if it makes sense for me to still pay for a cable bill. This service also works for VUDU, Amazon Instant Video, Playstation Video Store and Hulu on PC. It cannot work for Hulu Plus because Hulu will not accept entropay and will not accept a credit card issued outside the US.

There are a lot more instructions on the website.

Interesting.

I currently don't have cable, but I was actually going to apply for it in March.

I will certainly test this out.  If it works well, I may not even bother with cable.

GG sir.  +1  :icon_thumright:

Brilliant brilliant briliant linkage Eroo

We could probably use this to encourage more console purchasing and stuff too.

Hard O/C hotspotshield is good for a free alternative but its not good for streaming hd and its impossible to game on at a good ping (imho) .

nice one op. I'm assuming this would work with any region blocking.

I was recently trying out boxee and got this problem

@Eroo. Excellent, tested and works. Screw you regional restrictions :D.

One issue, not getting HD video at all. Video quality hovers between Low and High SD quality.
Have you noticed if it's a congestion based thing in relation to peak hours?
Or does it "eventually" stream at HD when playing the movie for a while, that is, when the internet connection speed increases high enough to stream HD.

Or is it the trial at usvideo.ca limiting bandwidth? Does the paid subscription give you HD?

Thanks much for the post Eroo.

Tested it with Hulu, and it works like a charm.

Now THIS service I would pay for.

Hot DAMN Eroo...I think you might have just saved me some money.
Now to sign up for some Netflix.

I am now considering building a small HTPC to attach exclusively to my TV.  :)

+10 from me too.

Not all netflix movies are HD and you cant search by HD on the ps3. Search for some HD movies using the pc version and then try those movies on the PS3 and see if you can get them in HD. I was watching Mortal Kombat in High/HD) just this morning.

I just tested it out. The movie quality increases from Low SD to High HD over time (2mins or so). It simply takes a while to adjust to line quality.
So yep, HD is working fine.
Thanks again for the post Eroo!

Anybody able to access the PlayStation "Video" Store? (Open Playstation Store and there should be a button at the top that switches the store to the movie store).
This should work for anyone with a US account. Doesn't work for me but it supposed to work :/

Those with US PlayStation accounts, download "VUDU" from the PlayStation Store.
It's a premium service where you pay for each rental from $2usd (older catalogue) to $6usd for day one Blu-Ray release rentals.
You get $5.99usd free to use upon starting VUDU.
In terms of content, service and quality, VUDU blows Netflix out of the water imo. Very pricey though. Video immediately starts streaming at 1080p, they have 3D movies on there as well. There's also a section with upcoming movie trailers in 1080p. Nice stuff.

As for actually paying for stuff with VUDU, not sure if Entropay or local credit cards would work. I'll give it a shot when I subscribe to Netflix with entropay.

DNS is meant to be used by more than one person... see www.opendns.com (http://www.opendns.com) although that wouldn't apply in this case :P

For movie and tv show watching you all can use this software found here:

www.hotspotshield.com (http://www.hotspotshield.com)

And load up www.hulu.com (http://www.hulu.com) and register i think and u can stream all ur crap to ur pc. :P

Basically this software allows you to view content that not allowed down here, us based sites only nah.

Used it last year to watch some nice movies and Tv shows.

Hulu blocked hotspot some time ago, unless they found some way around it.

WRT Netflix

This is a godsend, when I saw the Canadian guide on Reddit just before Christmas I never thought it would work. Kudos for trying it.

Is it because you live in the Philippines?

Phillipine dread is a place in trinidad, like california and banladesh :p heh ayie only joking eh OC hotspot shield real boss. streams hulu like a charm and once you hit full screen you dont have to worry about the ads. i used hotspot shield to bypass apple's ip checking to sign up for an account in the us app store. before it would appear to to through but it would never confirm my email. i also used hotspot shield to install google voice phone plug in, now that its installed i can make free phonecalls to any american phone landline or cell and it continues to work even if you disconnect hotspot and use normal blink. that alone is worth installing hotspot sheild. better than majic jack by far and FREE. i also got to download netflix to my ipod not sure if it will work though i have to sign up for service now, i will let you all know when i put some cash on my prepaid vtm

Jarrox is actually using Netflix now, but he has a 50Mb package from Flow, not sure how the 2Mb from Blink will run with the video streaming, but i guess its worth a try. Message Jarrox on Xbox Live and ask him about his set-up.

I have 2mb blink package and been watching movies quite fine, buffers quite quickly and runs well all the way through so have no fear.

I don't have and xbox but a ps3. Watched movies on my laptop and on my desktop. Haven't tried it on with the ps3 yet, just installed netflix on it.

It's pretty easy to do so let's know if you got through ok.

Nice to hear, I know someone who also wanted to know if 2mb would be sufficient.
Regarding stream quality though you have any idea what resolution/quality of video that 2mb package peaks at?
On the PS3 you could check by pressing "SELECT" when the movie playing.

Usvideo offers a 1 week trial and Netflix offers a 1 month trial. Anybody wondering if it will work for them can just test it and see for yourself for free.

If you don't want to change the DNS settings on the router you can just simply change them on your PC.
Control Panel>Network Connections>*Local Area Connection*>Properties>Internet Protocol(TCP/IP)>Use the following DNS Server Address

I sent you a reply on live... but everything you need to know is said right here... Just goto usvideo.org signup for the trial and follow their instructions on setting it up...they even have picture guides.... then goto netflix and signup for the trial....
for me I went tru my trial years ago so I had to use entropay and signup for the monthly package and I tell you its worth every cent...
Been on Netflix every day since this little gem was posted...
take some more chakra for that.....

This discussion has me interested. I am going to sign up :) I was wondering, will I only be allowed to use one client at a time? I have a HTPC in the living room & a PS3 in my room. Would both be able to stream Netflix shows or can only one device login at a time? If this goes well it might really be a cable replacement yes.

Think I'll be able to pull off consistent HD quality with a Flow 25mbit?

I've done streaming on both my PC and PS3 at the same time for SD clips so once you have the bandwidth simultaneous HD streaming should work.

Thanks ah now see what all this talk is about hehe. I've been watching Netflix movies for the past few hours and I must say I was BLOWN away. I tried it on my netbook, things played flawlessly. Honestly I was expecting it to stutter etc since even with my 25mbit connection youtube takes forever. Going to try it on meh PS3.

Seriously considering cancelling my cable service though I am worried this workaround could die any minute :p Wonder if Netflix will catch onto this lol.

EDIT: Ok getting some nice results on the PS3, this is great! (All we need is a NROP section :p)

Hmm if that's the case then let me make the most of it now yes lol. I was up until 4 am "testing" it out :s.

So I dusted off the old Wii to see how Netflix works on it. It works ok, SD of course. One thing I didn't like tho, seems to have less genres avaialble and well not seeing the subgenres like I would on PS3 and PC. Not complaining though, still amazed this thing working so well....this service can turn pirates into paying customers lol

EDIT: Watching an old 80's movie called The Package, this is the bandwidth being used by Netflix on the Wii according to my router.

Amazon's plans for unlimited movie streaming akin to Netflix appeared to come to early fruition on Saturday as a spotting has shown the service in action. At least one Amazon Prime subscriber has seen options in the Video On Demand section to stream movies and TV shows, even major recent releases, as part of the $79 yearly subscription. The catalog seen by an Engadget reader had 5,000 titles that would show in 480p.

The online reseller hasn't confirmed any of the plans, and widespread reports have yet to emerge. A possibility exists that the unlimited VOD is a trial and isn't immediately ready to go live.

The addition of the feature would be the largest hit to Netflix, whose streaming-only plan has a larger catalog but also costs $96 a year to maintain. It would also mount stiff competition against Apple's iTunes and other pay-per-title services since it would be one of the first major services to merge both unlimited streaming with the option of getting a permanent copy. Adding other Prime features, such as free expedited shipping, could give Amazon a competitive edge.

Amazon's service is also uniquely cross-platform and, in its core form, works on both Macs and Windows PCs as well as TiVos and some other media hubs.

I read abt this over the weekend and just renewed my Prime membership this morning.

What would make this PERFECT is if it comes to our region w/o need for workarounds.
Although a specific DNS may work in this case, I say hells yes, bring it on.

Maybe finally I can cut down on my home storage and use video ON DEMAND service. NB this is not streaming like Netflix.

Hmm so I am getting HD quality right through on my pc. I noticed that my PS3 was only delivering "Low SD" on my HDTV which wasn't looking so hot. Didn't really get chance to fully investigate but after simply using ethernet instead of wifi that problem was completely gone. Sweet sweet big screen HD butter like video :)

Thank you ethernet, thank you Flow, thank you Netflix and most importantly thank you Eroo! hey that last part kinda rhymes :p

Hey guys haven't logged into gatt is a long while so now seeing this.
Just letting u know if anyone interested in a VPN. I've been using Strong VPN and netflix since last November and it works like a charm. Strong VPN costs 55us a year and I never had a problem with them, so far. Speed is unrestricted and latency is low. I have it setup in work as well, cause I use netflix there sometimes to kill time during the day when things are slow. It also works with everything else I've tried it with that's limited to the US - hulu, amazon etc.

Could you elaborate on your use of Strong VPN specifically with Amazon VOD? Firstly, are you in Trinidad? I ask as some people here are not within our borders. Secondly, if you are in Trinidad did you have to set up a new Amazon account as I believe they require a US based credit card / address. Did you have to use entropay or some other work around for the credit card issue? You can message me the details if you like but others may be interested in your knowledge. Thanks.

Yep, im in trinidad, using my rbtt cc. I have my skybox address (ezone) on my card and on amazon's website. Ive never tried to buy videos, I sure it will work, cause I have amazon prime membership so there's alot of movies/tv series that are free to stream. Title: Do You Suffer from Netflix Streaming Syndrome?
Post by: TheApprentice on April 26, 2011, 06:25:46 PM
As technology marches on, it brings with it a whole new set of maladies. Just as keyboards have given rise to carpal tunnel syndrome, another innovation has created an ailment just as awful. Let us warn you about Netflix Streaming Syndrome.

When VHS was introduced decades ago, buying the cassettes for home viewing was cost prohibitive, so the business model of the video store was created. People would rent tapes, watch them, and then return them after several days. (Yes, it was as primitive as it sounds.) Soon the model shifted and people started buying tapes—and later DVDs—to view in their own home at their convenience. But while this worked fine when it came to your favorite movies or TV shows, it was still too pricey to assemble a vast library of entertainment content.

All of that has changed with the introduction of Netflix's unlimited streaming service, which lets you watch countless movies or TV shows whenever you want to. And not only on your computer. With an Apple TV or a Wii, you can even stream them on your big, fancy HD television. It's basically like being at the movies except there isn't any popcorn stuck in your couch and you don't have some annoying old lady sitting next to you making you stand up seven times so she can go back and forth to the rest room. Or, maybe you do?

While this innovation is great, it's also created a horrendous new ailment called Netflix Streaming Syndrome. Symptoms include:

These symptoms were avoided in the old days because one had to go to a Blockbuster or wait for a DVD to arrive in the mail, which means spacing out your consumption with other activities like interacting with your family, cooking food, doing laundry, working at a job, paying bills, and, in general, being a human being. With Netflix's streaming plan, your very humanity is in jeopardy.

And it's not just Netflix. There is all of your cable company's on-demand offerings to contend with, which can suck up more time than something worthwhile like, say, remodeling your kitchen. Then there's iTunes with all of its downloadable movies and countless season passes that are inexpensive and readily available. And let's not forget our old friend Hulu, which is like a repository for recently departed episodes of your favorite television shows. Then there is the peripheral and somewhat related black hole of watching music for an eternity on YouTube. Yes, we have become the ultimate instant gratification society, and every new gadget, program, and web service is making it even easier to wallow in our every whim.

What is the cure for Netflix Streaming Syndrome? Well, it's both dreadfully simple and woefully complex. It is something that Americas aren't especially good at: self-restraint. Yes, that means only watching one episode of The Cosby Show at a time (OK, maybe two or three), rather than investing nine hours in the entire season, or opting for one movie on a Saturday night rather than as many as you can squeeze into your bloodshot eyeballs until they fall out and roll across the floor. Yes, it's a blessing to have so much great content available for any itinerant moment that needs filling up, but—like with anything—if you abuse it, it's going to make you sick.

nowadays I've got more bandwidth than appetite/time.

Averaging one episode a day or a movie

Still, around vacation time its not unusual to feast on 5-6 episodes/movies in  a day

Now when I look at Netflix, the selection has improved durastically over the months and is now pretty much on par with the US.

i just VPN to trinidad and signed up for the 1 month trial also. There are both movie/TV content for the Latin America Region as expected, but the non LAR content seems to be somewhat on-par with the US/CA content. Check attached screenshots for Genres and some of the available content differences, your not missing alot they can keep the one highlighted.

Ok some good news, it seems that the account is not linked to a region. i.e a T&T created account will be usable in US, CA, etc.... well US confirmed for me. The content also changes for region that you are connected from which is good for persons who may have their VPN subscriptions still available.

yup basically, just know the content available will change according to the region your in.

Doomtack the same holds through in the reverse, T&T has US movies that the USA dose not have. Overall a VPN will give you the best of both worlds.

UPDATE: Netflix is NOT limiting its streaming! See details below.
Whew! Crisis averted. What looked to be another blow for Netflix customers today — people who pay for streaming plans could no longer watch more than one movie or show at a time on multiple devices — is not really happening. For those who already decided to scrap the DVD mailing plan when the company separated its signature red envelopes from its instant viewing plan this summer, effective Sept. 1, the enforcement of Netflix's single-stream policy could have been the final straw.
Turns out, Netflix had a glitch and sent out error messages, in error.
Thanks to Time for this:
"No Netflix member is limited to less than two concurrent streams," Netflix spokesman Steve Swasey sent in an email. "A few Netflix members have heard differently from us, which is an error that we are correcting."
But, should they ever decide to do this in the future, Mashable reports the enforcement's most likely casualties: "The change could have a major effect on how families use Netflix. No longer can one person watch a movie from the iPad while the rest of the family watches another film on the Xbox, for example."
Netflix caused quite a stir on its own social media platforms this summer with its announcement that members could no longer have a combination plan of DVDs and streaming. The separated plans also came with a 60 percent price hike. (Once a combined $9.99, the streaming service is now $7.99, while the cheapest DVD plan is also $7.99.) This could open the way for rivals such as Redbox to gain angry ex-Netflix subscribers, thousands of whom have said they would cancel their service.
While there was a decline in net subscriber additions from the first quarter of 2011 to the second, the mass exodus has yet to be reflected in Netflix's financial reports — yet. If anything, the third quarter report should show what impact the separation of plans has had.
Netflix also might feel the burn from the loss of movies from Starz. Talks between the two companies broke down last week.
Once those error messages started popping up limiting streams, members once again took to the Netflix Facebook page to air out their grievances on this latest (supposed) affront.

Good to know.

Gonna give that free trial a spin. See if I can get the misses even more distracted (as if the Ipad 2 wasn't enough)

Title: The 10 Best Sci-Fi Series Available On Netflix Instant
Post by: woodyear99 on September 22, 2011, 06:33:28 PM
Who knows if Netflix will be around a year from now. Check out these scifi shows in case you missed them

http://www.giantfreakinrobot.com/television/10-scifi-series-netflix-instant-watch-company-collapses.html (http://www.giantfreakinrobot.com/television/10-scifi-series-netflix-instant-watch-company-collapses.html)

We’re living in a golden age of television viewing. Not because of what’s airing on network or cable television right now, most of that’s reality programming crap, but because of all the great, older content that’s available with the touch of a button thanks to the genius of Netflix Instant Watch.

Unfortunately, this golden age may be woefully short lived. Netflix is in trouble. Greedy content providers have seen dollar signs and in response all that on demand content currently available in one spot is on the verge of being pulled out of circulation to be scattered to the four winds of the internet, or in some cases buried in a deep vault somewhere hidden until the rights holder can squeeze a few more dollars out of some other content provider. Maybe Netflix could find a way to survive that, but other recent business decisions made by the company seem destined to doom them entirely (Qwikster? Seriously what are they thinking?).

Maybe they survive but just in case they don’t, now is the time to maximize your Netflix Instant Watch usage to catch up on great science fiction that, unless you were willing to pay top dollar for a box set on Amazon, there was just no convenient way to watch before. Because getting TV shows one DVD at a time in the mail just won’t do, these are the best science fiction series available on Instant Watch, right now.

That's some solid advice there woody.

People have been saying "woe" for Netflix for sometime now. Would be a shame to see it come to pass.

Hopefully, to be replaced by something even more ubiquitous. FacebookFlix or NetPlus ftw.

I'll need a year vacation to watch the 1000+ episodes listed altogether in that article.

Also, strange that Babylon 5 didn't make the cut. Is it not available on the service?
Title: UPDATE
Post by: Eroo on October 06, 2011, 12:23:14 PM
UPDATE: It now seems Unblockus is no longer necessary. I am connecting at work without the use of changing the DNS.

Ok on closer looking at the store it appears to be different from the US, need to compare it home with both to tell.

Hey has anyone got this working on the Blink wimax?

It seems that no matter what dns setting you put in it will still use TSTT's own.

Following a similar thread on another local forum, and someone suggested MediaHint (https://mediahint.com/).

It's a Chrome/Firefox extension.  It just works.

You should look into upgrading your wireless router, you can't go wrong with an ASUS AC series wireless router. RT AC66U is a good starter.
