Title: HP Thin Clients
Post by: Computerman on June 17, 2011, 03:27:49 PM
Anyone familiar with deploying, maintaining, monitoring and updating large quantities of HP Thin Clients?  More specifically HP t5550.

We usually deploy small quantities so we setup and configure individually.  But we are looking at changing out 40 units, so I am looking for a more efficient solution.

Some sort of Network imaging solution should do it. What OS are you using win embedded, linux. Another option i have been playing around with, well just in a home environment is linux ltsp with terminal server connection, which performs pretty well and allows use of windows application in a linux environment or just straight link to the terminal server. There are many options when using this method.

I been researching CloneZilla for use in my organization... open source and does multicasting over the network

I am a little confused.

Thought the whole idea behind thin clients is that they are centrally managed and do not require updating individually on the workstation side?

Did a roll out with linux ltsp and that's the way it worked. Booted straight off the network.

You are quite right, that is the way it 'should' be done.  Unfortunately the company undertaking this 'upgrade' is still operating as if it's 1990 (in terms of IT management)!  The main issue with deploying these units is that each unit requires a unique configuration to connect to a mainframe system so 'common' deployment is not an option.  When I first started deploying Neoware thin clients (over 10 years ago) it was much simpler to manage than these new HP units.

I am a little confused.
