Hardware, Tweaking & Networking / Flow network hell HELP!
« on: May 21, 2010, 06:54:41 PM »
So i get internet from my neighbor via CAT5 cable , the network setup is a flow modem going into a switch for the neighbours local network , and then a cable from that switch to my switch/router in my house.

Ever since he moved from Blink to Flow i can no longer get a reliable connection to the internet . To detect computers on my home network the flow modem needs to be reset , and after awhile it just stops giving IPs and refuses to recognize any machines even if  i set the correct static ip/local server etc. manually.

By crixx's advice i tried to log into the modem to disable DHCP , so i went by my neighbour with my laptop and i simply could not access the modem via any of the IPs listed in ipconfig/all , the DNS , local server etc. all refused to connect.

Back home now on the home network , my laptop plugged into my router works fine with the internet and will get assigned an IP automatically ,my desktop however refuses to work as before even if i set a static ip....

Any help?? Im going to ask flow support to disable DHCP on the modem or to give me some assistance later on this week .

remember the setup is : Modem --> Switch ---> Router--> My PC and laptop

I'v used both a router (with dhcp enabled and disabled ) and a switch on my home network to the same effects..

The MOBA Dome / Icefrog hired by Valve

While IceFrog didn't say whether he'll work on a new game with Valve using the same rule-sets as the RTS/RPG hybrid, he did make clear that his current priority is to finish the current 6.64 patch for DotA, and afterward plans to begin work on the following 6.65 patch. Though it seems that it's business as usual for IceFrog, he has been given an entire team to manage at Valve.

Media calls it 'halo esque' , but stuff like this has been the standard fare for FPS games since day one.

It obviously lacks the regenating energy shield and mini fusion reactors to be dubbed 'halo esque' .

Stuff like this should improve combat performance tremendously, its the next big step before muscle

suits , power armour and mechs.

PC Gaming / Left 4 Dead demo out , launch november 18th
« on: November 11, 2008, 09:18:47 PM »
Get steam and get the demo , the next big multiplayer sensation from our friends at Valve .

demo is  2 gigs   ,  not long at all with steam's fast download speeds.

The synposis of left 4 dead : Basically the ultimate zombie survival horror.

So far the game has alot of promise and potential , but bugs are holding me back .

I'v only played on one server so far for one mission ,   every time i get to level 2 the textures corrupt , turning the whole world white and bright colour , ruining everything.

Servers give alot of trouble to connect as dedicated machines are rare , and the game auto searches and auto connects , to bad servers it seems.

but for the 10 minutes i DID play it , it seemed a really cool game. Very polished gameplay .

I will be writing in a weekly thingy that comes in the monday guardian called Gienetwork only technology and gaming related issues.

in recognition of my noobery and the expertise of my fellow forumites ,  i will be coming once in awhile to pose tech questions to the likes of Gatt and Trinigamers.

The question i pose today relates to the cost and availability of local tech :

Where is the best place for the average joe to buy their PCs/consoles locally ?

How much of a premium is acceptable for a local retailer versus the price online?

PC Gaming / Star wars : Old Republic (MMO)
« on: October 21, 2008, 07:17:43 PM »
http://pc.gamespy.com/pc/bioware-mmo-project/922270p1.html

Bioware and Lucasarts officially anounced it ,   i have high hopes for this to be a superb game.  KOTOR and the star wars expanded universe leaves thousands of years of law to be harnessed into an epic adventure .

The game is set 3600 years before the movies, where there's an an uneasy truce betwen the Republic and Sith Empire, and there will be a huge emphasis on class-based personal stories. As Erickson describes it, every class has a story that will span from the first level of the game to the last, and none of the stories are the same. For example, if you play a Jedi from the first level to the last, and then a Sith from the first level to the last, you will not see a single repeated class

Graphics Cards / GT200B cometh , GTX280+ and GT350
« on: September 21, 2008, 10:52:15 PM »
http://austin.net.au/ProductList/tabid/103/Default.aspx?Category=GRAPHICS+CARDS

According to a this link and some commentary on www.techreport.com , it seems Nvidia's 55nm die shrink of the GT200 gpu is soon to be available.

The GT350 sports 2GB of GDDR5 according to the site , i'm imagining its the dual gpu variant Nvidia has designed to take back the performance crown.

the GT200 is a great design on paper , once Nvidia gets the costs down and clock speeds up it will be a force to be reckoned with once again..

ATI has nothing on the cards till next year i believe, but the R700 is very small and cheap to produce , i imagine their plan is to slash prices to remain a more attractive buy.

so i'm speculating something like this :

  4870 X2 = 350
  4870= 200-250
  4850= 150 US

Notice ATI has no R700 product between the 80 USD 4670 and the 200USD 4850 , that leaves lots of room for price slashing , and with the R700 chips being so small and cheap to produce ,they can continue to profit.

just idle speculation at this point , but its logical.

I'm in UWI doing Law and will be needing a laptop when i go to barbados next year .

My budget is around 1000 US , and i'd like to have half decent gaming capabilty and a good warranty..

So far the best value for money  , hardware wise seems to be Asus brand laptops , anyone here have experience using them?

 Recommendations? Thoughts?
