Sony PlayStation / God of War: Ascension

Kratos is coming back to the PlayStation 3 in God of War: Ascension. Rumblings of God of War IV have been floating around for months, but a PlayStation Facebook post last week kicked things into overdrive. Today, Amazon posted the game's box art and a teaser trailer.

God of War: Ascension
Although the trailer shows no gameplay, it features the familiar narration of the Titan Gaia as she sets up what certainly sounds like a prequel to the five God of War games that are already out. In the teaser, Gaia states that there was a time before Kratos became the Ghost of Sparta and before rage consumed him.

"A time when in spite of the madness that plagued him, Kratos would break his blood oath to an unjust God," Gaia says. "A time when he will no longer be bound in blood."

The God of War story millions have already played picks up after Kratos has pledged allegiance to Ares, had the Blades of Chaos burned into his flesh, and killed his wife and daughter after an Ares trick. Gaia's words make it sound as if God of War: Ascension chronicles Kratos' time before all that -- when he was leading the Spartan army and perhaps "ascending" to his legendary status.

YES, YES and more YES!!

Google today went public with its plans to offer augmented-reality glasses, which it’s calling “Project Glass.”
Unveiling the project should make it easier for Google to test the weird-looking glasses in public. As currently designed, they have a horizontal frame that rests on a wearer’s nose, with a wider strip of computer and a little clear display on the right side. So they’re not really “glasses” in the traditional sense at all.
From a video Google put out of how the prototype works, an augmented-reality-glasses wearer can control music, get directions, take pictures, give voice commands and conduct video chats. The glasses don’t cover the whole eye, so it seems like the wearer does something like look up to engage with the display.
Project Glass is part of the Google
  • special projects division that also includes self-driving cars. The glasses team is led by Babak Parviz, Steve Lee and Sebastian Thrun.

The New York Times first reported the project in February. At the time, it said the glasses were expected to go on sale later this year. However, Google said today that it’s unlikely the glasses will hit the market this year.

Sony PlayStation / Heavy Rain developers show off new tech demo

Heavy Rain Developer Quantic Dream Shows Off Awesome Looking Tech Demo Running on PS3: “Kara”

Quote
Heavy Rain is still regarded as one of the best games on the PS3, which is why we here at PSLS are eagerly anticipating Quantic Dream’s next game. While the developer hasn’t revealed there next title just yet, they have debuted an impressive looking tech demo showing off the game’s new engine working in real time on PS3.

The video came is from David Cage’s “Technologies to Support Emotion” GDC talk, which was an hour long presentation on how virtual actors and performance capture can trigger emotions in games.

He said:
What you are going to see is this prototype I told you about. It’s running in real time on a PS3. It’s not CG, it’s not pre-rendered. It is displayed by our new engine we created after Heavy Rain. The capture is almost raw.
The video is about Kara, a factory built robot that becomes self aware. The point of the demo was to show the range of emotions the engine can portray, and the character was played by Twilight: Breaking Dawn actress Valorie Curry:

Quote
The video, while impressive, doesn’t even fully show what the engine of capable of. Cage said at GDC that the video is a year old, adding:

Kara has fifty percent of the features we have now. What we are witnessing with the likes of Omikron, of Heavy Rain, of Hollywood’s Avatar, of Kara is a steady walk out of the Uncanny Valley.

Cage told Eurogamer:
So we invested a lot in our motion capture studio. Heavy Rain was shot with 28 cameras, and we’ve upgraded the studio to 65 cameras. Now we can shoot several actors – their body and their face – at the same time. It’s not a small change, but at the same time this is how Avatar and Tintin were shot, and it’s how the CG industry works because they know how much you gain from shooting face, voice and body at the same time.

The video is much like Quantic Dream’s “The Casting” which showed off the Heavy Rain engine – but as you can see below, looked far worse than Heavy Rain.
If QD’s next game manages to improve on the visuals to the same degree, then the results will be truly incredible.

News / W.I. batsman Runako Morton, 33, dies in Trinidad car crash

Don't know how many cricket fans in here, but just thought i should post this. RIP man

The West Indies batsman Runako Morton has died following a car accident in Trinidad on Sunday night. Reports in the Caribbean said the 33-year-old lost control of his vehicle while driving and was killed when he crashed into a utility pole.

Morton played in 15 Tests and 56 one-day internationals for West Indies, and his last appearance for his country came against Australia in a Twenty20 international in 2010. While he averaged 22.03 in Tests, he had more success in the limited-overs game. He averaged 33.75, with the highlight an unbeaten 110 against New Zealand in 2006.

A tweet from the West Indies Cricket Board's official account read: "Our deepest condolences to Runako Morton's family. Such devastating and tragic news."

Several of Morton's team-mates also expressed their shock and sadness on Twitter. The Windies captain, Chris Gayle, said: "We lost a True Warrior. WI cricketer Runako Morton – may his soul rest in peace! Our memories together Live On! My condolences to his family."

The former all-rounder Wavell Hinds tweeted: "Gone far too soon brother Runako. I will treasure the great memories for sure. RIP God knows best," while Rayad Emrit, who played with Morton for Trinidad, said: "RIP Morton. You'll always be remembered buddy. Gone but NEVER forgotten. We miss you bro."

The England batsman Kevin Pietersen added: "My thoughts go out to Runako Morton's family this morning ... such sad news!! What a lovely guy and fierce competitor!! RIP bossman!!!"

General Gaming & System Wars / Assassin's Creed III

First look at the star of Assassin’s Creed III? Hmmmmm...American Revolution, very interesting

Quote
It appears that rumors of Assassin's Creed III taking place during the American Revolution and focusing on "the confrontation between British colonists and native Americans" may have been spot on–that is, if new character art rumored to reveal the new hero of Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed series is accurate.

One thing's for sure. It's cool as hell.

Kotaku reports that it received an early look at Assassin's Creed III promotional art from a Best Buy employee news resource. Set against a snowy backdrop is what appears to be our hero wearing assassin gear mixed with traditional Native American cues. He's armed with a bow and arrow, a pistol and a tomahawk that's shaped like the Assassin's Creed logo. He's even got another pistol and a saber as back-up.

Ubisoft said earlier this month that the next Assassin's Creed game is due on October 30. It will feature an all-new hero and a new setting. The company will officially unveil the game in March.

We've contacted Ubisoft to verify the image's authenticity, but it sure looks authentic from here. The full thing, tomahawk and all, is over at Kotaku.

Report: PlayStation 4 to Abandon the Cell Processor
Quote
The introduction of the PlayStation 3 included the Cell processor, a chipset designed by Sony to create the most advanced home video game console to date. Due to a number of possibilites, the results never quite reached Sony's high expectations, and it looks like the company may be moving to a different processor architecture for the PlayStation 4.

According to Kotaku, the PlayStation 3's successor will abandon the existing Cell processor in favor of a chip produced by AMD. Originally reported by Forbes, Sony's shift to an AMD produced chip would stray from its current partner and AMD rival, NVIDIA.

If taken to be true, developers can begin creating games using existing AMD architecture, as opposed to waiting for Sony to release new technology. Considering this, developers could, theoretically, already have the tools to start working on the next generation of home console gaming. Straying away from proprietary technology can also result in more consistent ports between platforms, something that has been a tough challenge for some PlayStation titles.

Sony has yet to make any announcements regarding the PlayStation 4, and the company is in no rush to do so.

ENEVA –  Leading scientists said on Friday the discovery of sub-atomic particles apparently traveling faster than light could force a major rethink of theories on the makeup of the cosmos if independently confirmed.

Jeff Forshaw, a professor of particle physics at Britain's Manchester University, told Reuters the results if confirmed would mean it would be possible in theory to "send information into the past."
"In other words, time travel into the past would become possible...(though) that does not mean we'll be building time-machines anytime soon."

The CERN research institute near Geneva said measurements over three years had shown neutrinos pumped to a receiver in Gran Sasso, Italy, had arrived an average of 60 nanoseconds sooner than light would have done -- a tiny difference that could nonetheless undermine Albert Einstein's 1905 special theory of relativity.

"Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, and this is an extraordinary claim," eminent cosmologist and astrophysicist Martin Rees told Reuters.

"It is premature to comment on this," Professor Stephen Hawking, the world's most well-known physicist, told Reuters. "Further experiments and clarifications are needed."

Professor Jenny Thomas, who works on neutrinos at CERN's friendly rival Fermilab near Chicago in the United States, commented: "The impact of this measurement, were it to be correct, would be huge."
CERN's own research director Sergio Bertolucci said if the findings were confirmed -- and at least two separate laboratories are likely to start work on this in the near future -- "it might change our view of physics."

The high level of caution is normal in science where anything that could be a breakthrough discovery, especially overturning well-established thinking, is in principle always checked and rechecked by other researchers.

In a comment issued by CERN, the world's leading laboratory for particle research on the edge of Geneva, Bertolucci underscored this principle.

"When an experiment finds an apparently unbelievable result and can find no artefact of the measurement to account for it, it is normal to invite broader scrutiny....it is good scientific practice," he said.
The measurements were posted on the scientific website http://arxiv.org/abs/1109.4897
overnight.

The discovery would open up intriguing theoretical possibilities.
"Light speed is a cosmic speed limit and it exists in order to protect the law of cause and effect," said Professor Forshaw.

"If something travels faster than the cosmic speed limit, then it becomes possible to send information into the past - in other words, time travel into the past would become possible. That does not mean we'll be building time-machines anytime soon though - there is quite a gulf between a time-travelling neutrino to a time-travelling human."

In just three weeks, online gamers deciphered the structure of a retrovirus protein that has stumped scientists for over a decade, and a study out Sunday says their breakthrough opens doors for a new AIDS drug design.
The protein, called a protease, plays a critical role in how some viruses, including HIV, multiply. Intensive research has been underway to find AIDS drugs that can deactivate proteases, but scientists were hampered by their inability to crack the enzyme's structure.

Looking for a solution, researchers at the University of Washington turned to Foldit, a program created by the university a few years ago that transforms problems of science into competitive computer games, and challenged players to use their three-dimensional problem-solving skills to build accurate models of the protein.

With days, the gamers generated models good enough for the researchers to refine into an accurate portrayal of the enzyme's structure. What's more, the scientists identified parts of the molecule that are likely targets for drugs to block the enzyme.

"These features provide opportunities for the design of antiretroviral drugs, including anti-HIV drugs," the authors wrote.

Proteins are made up of long chains of amino acids that fold into complex shapes, but their structures are difficult even for computers to predict.

"We wanted to see if human intuition could succeed where automated methods had failed," said Firas Khatib, a lead author of the study, published in the journal Nature Structural & Molecular Biology.

The researchers were hopeful that their finding would open further possibilities of crowd-sourcing and online game-playing in scientific discovery.

"The ingenuity of game players is a formidable force that, if properly directed, can be used to solve a wide range of scientific problems," Khatib said.

Seth Cooper, a co-creator of Foldit, added, "People have spatial reasoning skills, something computers are not yet good at. Games provide a framework for bringing together the strengths of computers and humans. The results in this week's paper show that gaming, science and computation can be combined to make advances that were not possible before."
