Hardware, Tweaking & Networking / RAM problem

is there some sort of ram limit on dell machines? i'm trying to stick 2 512mbs sticks of sdram in a dimension 4300 machine... but i get a blue screen everytime i try to boot. so for the moment i'm just running with one 512 stick and a 128 stick. i haven't seen any bios upgrades for my motherboard past 2001, so i'm guessing i don't need a bios upgrade... anyone ever came across this problem?

ok so i don't really know if this is hardware or software related... i'll just stick it in here...

so i gots winxp running on a dell 4300
SP2
200GB WD HD
256MB RAM

every day or so, the hard drive light comes on.... AND STAYS ON! it's doing god knows what... i didn't see anything new in task manager, and only other programs running are norton antivirus 2005 and norton personal firewall 2005. The HD light will stay on and every 2 minutes or so, the machine will freeze... for about 2 mins, then unfreeze... HD light staying on constantly. and the only way i can get it to stop is to hit the power button and turn it back on again :-(

anyone know wtf is going on with my PC?
