News / RSA looks ahead on RFID security
« on: February 20, 2005, 12:30:36 PM »
RSA 2005 Cryptographic researchers are working out ways to make RFID technology more palatable to consumers ahead of its expected widespread deployment over the coming years.

RFID tags are small silicon microchips attached to an antenna which emit a unique serial number by radio over short distances. RSA is concerned that information stored on RFID tags could be read by anyone with an RFID reader - data thieves, hackers - or worse.

Such an application could take 10 years to hit the streets, but security researchers need to think of the issues it raises now before standards become "baked in", according to Kaliski.

Traditionally, security systems are based on the premise that a system is trustworthy and it’s up to the user to establish his credentials. With the possibility of rogue RFID readers, this premise no longer holds true and a different approach is needed.

News / Nvidia updates GoForce phone chip
« on: February 15, 2005, 12:43:16 AM »
The new chip, the 4800, adds 30fps MPEG 4 decode and encode at image resolutions of up to 640 x 480 to the 4500's spec. sheet. It can also compress three megapixel images using JPEG, optimising each image's compression level to maximise available memory.

The 130nm 4800 offers 640 x 480 LCD support and can handle real-time, full duplex, two-way video conferencing at 352 x 288 and 30fps, Nvidia claimed.

The chips provide pixel-shader programmability with 40-bit colour support, and bilinear and trilinear filtering, though there's no anti-aliasing, a key selling point of a number of rival designs, such as Falanx's Mali cores. The GoForce 3D chips host a 128-bit memory interface and integrate 1.3MB of 128-bit SRAM. They are OpenGL ES and MD3D compliant.

Nvidia didn't say whether the 4800 is shipping or not, but it did say it expects handsets containing the chip to ship by the end of the year.

News / MS, Nokia in Valentine's Day headline bid
« on: February 15, 2005, 12:37:13 AM »
3GSM Nokia and Microsoft signed two significant deals today, with Nokia's executive VP for enterprise, Mary McDowell, hinting that there would be more to come.

Nokia is partnering with LoudCloud to allow carriers to build branded DRM music download services. As part of the deal, Nokia phones will play back Windows Media files, but only through a complex transcoding which takes a Windows Media file and converts it to an AAC format.

When it comes to music, said a Microsoft executive in Cannes today, "We should not have borders or barriers." Quite right, although the DRM regime that Microsoft puts in the user's way is all about barriers. A sweaty executive called Michael Nash from Warner Brothers Music apologized for not being present to bless the partnership - "I'm at the Grammys!", he said - and didn't blink once.

Long term Nokia has been doing some serious thinking about digital downloads, and must be prepared to weather the poor reception such a clunky arrangement will surely meet.

News / Intel ships 2MB cache 64-bit Xeon
« on: February 15, 2005, 12:27:32 AM »
Intel has begun shipping its latest 64-bit Xeon DP chip, 'Irwindale', the chip maker said today. It also pledged to ship an updated 64-bit Xeon MP part, 'Potomac', "within 90 days".

The new Xeon DPs contain 2MB of on-die L2 cache, up from the 1MB built into the previous version, and are clocked at 3.0, 3.2, 3.4 and 3.6GHz. The chips are priced at $316, $455, $690 and $851, respectively. Both generations support Intel's AMD64-like EM64T 64-addressing system, as do the upcoming Pentium 4 6xx desktops chips, due to be announced this week too.

The upcoming Xeon MPs will sport 8MB of on-die L3 cache. An modified version, codenamed 'Cranford', with no L3 cache but 1MB of L2, for vendors who want to offer four-way systems but at a more comparable price point to two-way Xeon DP-based machines.

Potomac will utilise Intel's 8500 chipset, aka 'Twin Castle', which incorporates support for 400MHz ECC DDR 2 SDRAM, PCI Express and twin asymmetric frontside buses the better to support future dual-core processors.

Actually I am clearly sure i identified myself as i saw you and realised you were THE Imperial, i gave you a bounce and said 'special K'. I couldnt stay anymore as you all wanted to try out the Tekken 5 and I had church @ 6 (I prayed for you all, don't worry). If you want a rematch, I have no objections, cause I get more time to practise as I am not a 3rd Strike person.
rb - I'll take you on in Dreamcast as that is my only console (other than the PSX which i dont use). I breathe DC!!
Nice pics Baego, but I only see myself partially in one of them sporting my trademark SRK cap for power!!
All in all I had fun as I havent played against humans in years other than when I started playing Baego last year.
But next time, all yuh bring more chicks, or I will walk with my own cheerleading squad.
